Hi there...often on medication the lab tests come out normal, but that doesn't

mean you've gone into remission. Your TSH is still low enough to have you

considered HyperT, so I'm surprised they've recommended you get off the PTU.

I guess it won't hurt since you can always go back on it.

The 20 pound gain is because your metabolism has slowed down as a result of

the PTU...that happened to me, as well. But I guess I'd rather be a little

bit " chubby " than hyper.

Good luck.

Your probably right. I doubt if the alternative medicine doctor works with

many graves disease patients. At the least, if I get hyper again it'll be

interesting to see where he goes from there.

Thanks,

Maybe a lower dose of PTU?

Hahaha. Your GP sounds angry to me.

The only alternative ideas I've found anywhere are the supplement that this

group is working with. This egroup is the best place to find out things.

I just keep searching and trying to make the right decisions.

Recently I read about a chinese herb root that sounds promising that I'm

looking into.

It is for autoimmune diseases. It is called

tripterygium Wilfodii Hook or

tripterygium wilfordii Hook Tripterygium or wilfordii hook.f.

(celastraceae) is in southern China. The herb, also called Lei Gong Teng

(thunder god vine or three wing nut

Anyway, one of those names.

it is an immune modulator natural immune modulators are rare and just

because it's natural doesn't mean it's not toxic.

as you can see, I'm pretty confused myself. It is hard trying to find

answers.

But it's better than giving up.

Good luck,

Ann

Me too. I don't understand the effects of hyperthyroidism except that it

effects everything. Speeds up metabolism. I guess it can burn you heart out.

'

I know I was getting really weak. My muscles were wasting. I was out of

breath.

My heart beat too fast. I had a tremor. It aged me fast.

Fat is easier to handle. There are a million answers to the fat problem.

Another response to the thin/fat issue. When I was hyperT, I lost weight, had

rapid heartbeat, weakness (could barely walk), etc. After being on beta

blockers, and then Tapezol (for a few months), I began to gain weight. I took

this to mean that my thyroid was slowing down, and asked my endo to check the

levels. He confirmed this, and so I started to taper the dosage of Tapezol.

In a few months, I was off the drugs entirely, and my weight stabilized (and

so did my thyroid hormone levels). So, the weight gain may be a sign to taper

the dosage. ( says that you can be hyperT and hypoT at the same time, so

that may be another possiblity, although I can't quite grasp the concept.)

No, there are not a million answers to the fat problem when one is hypoT.

I told my M.D. recently if I knew I was destined to be fat and weak for

the duration of this lifetime, no antidepressant on the planet would balm

the emotional pain. From what my naturopath says only extremely vigorous

exercise or steam room sessions will take fat off a hypothyroid person

who has gained weight. However, she also put someone on T3 or T4 or one

of those " T " ones last year and she says the person has lost almost 100

lbs. I know the person peripherally, can't wait to see and congratulate

her. The person has 's syndrome, which I don't have.

's vitamin supplements seem to be speeding up my own metabolism ever

so slowly such that weight is coming off--every so slowly, but I guess

that is better than a tremendously fast weight loss with lots of loose

skin flapping about---ugh! Folk say I have lost more weight than I

realize, but I have a really clear and fond memory of me when I was

slender for so many, many years, and I ain't thar yet!

Regards to all,

Joyce
