Hi :

How will you remember who is who if you get all this E mail? I will

refresh your memory. I am the gal who was intimidated by the

endocrinologist into taking RAD, I believe this treatment has left me

with a serious problem of insomnia. Now the pieces of this puzzle seem to

fit, one endocrinologist told me that my neurotransmitters are not

functioning; but he did not have any solution. I also want to tell you

that my thyroid problem started when I was under extreme stress. I've

tried many sleeping pills and anti depressants, but nothing seemed to

help; the side effects of the antidepressants were so bad and the

sleeping pills were only effective for a short time.

Today I went to the health food store and bought 30 mg Zinc capsules and

2mg , I am a bit hesitant in taking them because your latest E

mail said that in the beginning they made you feel crumy!! I allready

feel that way from lack of sleep; however I will try them. What time of

day is it best to take these minerals? I also need some encouragement.

Thank You,

Ruth

Hi Joyce and everyone else,

There are four posts from Joyce and I'm going to put my comments on all four

into this letter to keep things simple.

First of all I don't think that it's a foolish dream that your thyroid can

return to complete health after possible RAI or surgery. I have heard of it

happening. The fact that you've been primarily vegetarian through the

intervening years tells me that you've probably had multiple mineral

deficiencies for decades. The thyroid can regenerate but it needs the proper

minerals to do that. If you had been eating tons of seafood through those

years, then I would think " Well, the thyroid has probably received the right

minerals and it didn't recover. " Then I would be more pessimistic about the

chances of recovery today. But it appears that even though decades have

passed, your thyroid never had a chance of recovering because it has never

received all the minerals it needs.

Being overweight can have other causes besides an underactive thyroid (which

doesn't mean that the thyroid hasn't contributed to the problem). If you are

eating a diet which is mineral poor, then your body will crave a large

quantity of food in a desperate effort to get the minerals it needs. Often,

once you start providing your body with all the minerals (and vitamins) it

needs, not only will your energy drastically increase and you will burn more

calories, but you will probably eat less because your body's craving for

minerals will decrease.

Besides the minerals I have recommended for both hyper and hypo T, if you are

overweight you should also take chromium--this has a big effect in causing

your body to shed unnecessary fat. In fact, you should make sure you are

getting enough of every mineral to keep your body from craving excess food,

and to avoid the myriad of other degenerative deficiency diseases.

I would be very careful in dealing with health professionals. I've had

enough experience with and heard enough stories about alternative

practitioners to be especially doubtful about their recommendations. Herbs

can be useful because some of them are great accumulators of minerals which

can alleviate our deficiencies, but many herbs are used because they have

drug-like effects. I really have faith that our bodies are self-healing when

provided all the nutrients they need, and I don't see the need for drugs or

drug-like herbs, which have the potential to disturb sensitive chemical

processes in the body and cause more harm than good.

Your descriptions of your health practitioner's diagnoses concern me. I have

no comprehension how she could determine that your " spleen was full of sludge

and not filtering properly " or how she could find a " string on your thyroid

that she tried to 'burn' off. " It just sounds like witch-craft to me and I

really disbelieve it.

I've noted that often when I take a new mineral that subsequently proves very

beneficial, I experience feeling bad at first. I'm not sure why this is

(maybe the body needs the mineral and immediately begins an important

cleansing), but I've learned to keep taking it. There are no minerals which I

recommend which are bad for you.

One good indication of a mineral deficiency, however, is feeling bad after

eating a particular food. If you are healthy and have all your minerals,

practically no food will bother you. But if you are deficient in a mineral

and eat a food which is deficient in that same mineral, you can feel sick

afterward because the food drains your already deficient supply of the mineral

down further.

As far as taking zinc and copper at separate times of the day, I just don't

believe in that. You could consider zinc and copper as antagonists because

too much of one will drive the body's stores of the other down, but you could

also consider tham partners because they work together. We don't understand

what is going on at the molecular level, but from my experience, I've always

taken them together. I take half my vitamins and minerals with breakfast and

half with supper.

The vit E I take in the morning because it energizes me (which I don't want at

night).

The idea of using avocado pits to make a tea for iodine sounds crazy to me.

My dog and the coyotes who eat our garbage won't eat avocado pits (and those

coyotes get really hungry). Many pits contain toxins to keep animals from

eating them. Kelp is a wonderful source of not only iodine, but also of all

the trace elements. It is easier, time-tested and probably alot safer.

Glad to get your questions and comments. Make sure you get every mineral!

Your friend,

Dear Jon,

Thanks to your answer to my multiple questions.

As for overeating. Not the cause. I tend to forget meals and can fast at

will. A problem with taking supplements during the day is that I often

don't eat that much food, so I am having to take supplements when I have

eaten enough.

I get a bone marrow biopsy end of this week, then I will go back on the

supplements you recommend. The chromium I will take is picolinate.

Thanks again,

Joyce in Vermont
