The findings of a study involving hyperbaric oxygen therapy were released on Friday at a meeting of the US Autism & Asperger Association at the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center. Dr. Dan Rossignol is the principal investigator of the study, which found children showed significant improvements after receiving 40 treatments of hyperbaric oxygen versus those in a control group. " We've had more language, sometimes had new words, that type of thing, or (patients have) started putting more words into sentences. We also found improvements in cognition, which means their ability to think, focus ... that type of thing, " Rossingnol said. Doctors believe the hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps children with autism by increasing blood flow to areas of the brain which may have lower levels of oxygen than in typical children. The hyperbaric oxygen therapy has also been found to help with sleep and intestinal problems often associated with autism. Wrangham, 16, of Boulder, has an autism spectrum disorder. Her family was so motivated by its potential to help her that they bought a $15,000 portable hyperbaric oxygen chamber for their home. Parent Theresa Wrangham said she's seen improvement since then. " She's using words she's never used before and she's not in speech therapy right now and she's not in school, so I'm not sure where she's getting the words, " Theresa Wrangham said. Wrangham told CBS4 the chamber is helping her to better organize her thoughts. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the US. Earlier this year the Centers for Disease Control announced its prevalence was one in 150 people, which is an alarming increase from 40 years ago when it was one in 10,000.
