Guest guest
A true hyperbaric chamber is considered a medical device and by law can only be purchased by a hospital of a physician with current license. Guest guest
I totally understand what you are saying Rita, these are not 100% chambers they are portable chambers. Neither one of these are mine they are friends that do not wish to post on there own. One is in Mn and the other is out of SC. These people are not wanting to get a back lashing they are just hoping to help others. Thank you for the information that you have shared. ... Guest guest
To (you did not sign your name) Mackrn I would like to know where you got your information on this. What does technically mean? It either is or is not. If this is your opinion then please state it as such. With all the football players now purchasing chambers I'm sure if it was illegal then someone would have made a fuss before now, or is it ok because they are famous/rich? You see thanks to the diving industry, hyperbaric chambers are not regulated as much as they probably would be. It would cost the diving industry (military also) billions to put doctors on every ship. This is one of those times we benefit from the money made by a rich industry. Oxygen, in the US, above 95% is considered a drug and needs a script from a doctor NOT a chamber! Love to all, Rose Manning Re: [ ] chambers for sale Please share with what size the chambers are? Guest guest
I may be in the infancy of learning about the medical side of HBOT, but I know for darned sure that is it not illegal for chambers to purchased and used without a doctor in the U.S. Oxygen needs a prescription from the doctor, but a doctor doesn't have to dispense it. Think of all the people on home health that are using oxygen---that's a LOT of people and they surely don't have a doctor visiting their home---I know several on oxygen that don't even have a nurse coming to their home. Guest guest
....or, with a prescription, by anybody. And if you had to use it with nitrox, so be it. There are enough regulations that prevent patients from managing their own health, to also deprive them of this controversial technique. If they needed true hyperbaric chambers, let them go to a hospital, or, probably, to almost any self-respecting tropical beach. Guest guest
Sorry, but you have gotten your information a little confused concerning the the use of oxygen and hyperbaric chambers. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves the use of oxygen and a a device (chamber) that require a prescription from a physician. Check the regulations with the FDA. The chambers are considered a Class II device that are regulated by the FDA and require a 501K listing the uses and limitations of the chamber. Any person selling a true chamber for use by a non-physician is illegal and physicians that sell the chamber after purchasing it to a non-physician can put their license at risk. The reason I say technically is that many of the chambers used at home are used illegally or are not true HBO chambers. Unfortunately enforcement in this area is limited and probably will not be until there are a few more incidents or accidents using them. The problem I have with these chambers is that the public just hears " hyperbaric chamber " when there is an incident and doesn't pay attention to the fact it was a home based unit. Advertisement of indications for chamber use in the US that list non-accepted indications is regulated by the FDA and the False Claims Act. There have been several " hyperbaric chamber " manufacturers that have received an FDA warning letter due to this action. The NFPA 99, chapter 20 defines the safety measures that the local fire departments follow concerning hyperbaric chambers. The ASME PVHO is the safety standard for Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy and deals with the general requirements of fabrication which many of the portable chambers or chambers for minimal pressure do not meet. As for the use of HBO chambers by football players, most of the ones being treated with HBOT that I am aware of are being treated by trainers with specialty training that are under the auspices of the team physician. All chambers that are on military ships are also under the auspices of a physician and run by specially trained personnel. Maybe you are not aware of the fact that ships large enough to had a decompression chamber also have a medical staff. While it is true that commercial dive boats will not have a medical dive officer on board, they are required to have specially trained staff on boat to run the treatments and are in contact with a medical dive officer during the treatment. Where did I get this information. Well attend a minimum of 2 conferences a year on hyperbaric medicine, have worked in the field for over 23 years in both multiplace and monoplace environments, have helped develop over 27 hyperbaric programs across the country, one of the UHMS surveyors for chamber certification, presented multiple times at national meetings, published in several journals and one of the contributing authors in the only textbook in hyperbaric nursing in print. Guest guest
You should check FDA regualtions on the subject before you " know for darned " sure that purchasing a chamber without the appropriate licensure is not illegal in the US. Yes after the doctor has written the script for oxygen, they are not required to visit the home for the use of the oxygen. But there are regulations involved in the purity of the gas, how it is deliverd and how it is stored that is delegated to the person supplying the gas from the medical suppliers. When a medication used for an off label use the physician is required legally to obtained consent for an investigational indication. Guest guest
Not sure where they were located or who was involved as information was minimal due to HIPPA, but saw pictures at a recent seminar of a homemade chamber that blew and had a presentation of several problems that happened due to in attendance or inattention of tenders on the outside. Another case of no hard documentation as there is no one in oversight of these chambers. Wayne D. Guest guest
I don't believe anyone on this list plans to make a homemade chamber. However, if we are kept from buying them, then expect that to start happening. The truth is that there is no way to do long term treatments without owning your own chamber. It is too difficult to travel, schedule and have a life all at the same time. The best thing for the hyperbaric community to do is to embrace the parents and help them get this safely instead of fighting it. Of course, I understand some doctors in other countries (not the US [exception Nuebauer]) do help their people. Rose Manning Re: [ ] chambers for sale Please share with what size the chambers are? Guest guest
Rose- Unless you are going to claim that you are a licensed commercial diver or have extensive experience in the commercial diving industry or the military medical corps then how can you make the statement you just made ? Couple of facts here : The professional athletes that purchase chambers are not acting alone in this. Think about it....Most of our revered and idolized athletes can hardly spell their own name let alone ponder a medical therapy. They didn't' wake up one morning and suddenly think " if I combine high barometric pressure with pure oxygen I will increase my natural ability to heal and grow stronger " .... Seriously, most of these guys are looking at the camera holding up two fingers while crying " We're number ONE ! " For every athlete who receives a chamber or any type of therapy there is a team DOCTOR behind it all controlling it..... simultaneously authorizing it through his medical license and thereby taking the liability. The difference (and truly the grey area) is when concerning o2. O2 in itself is not a controlled substance nor does it require a prescription for purchase or use....unless it is intended for use AS A MEDICAL THERAPY OR MEDICATION ! People use o2 all the time for many things not considered MEDICAL or THERAPY. Welding, diving, fabrication, etc. Finally, chambers are in the same category. When a chamber is being used for MEDICAL AND THEREPUTIC reasons it is considered a classified medical device controlled by the FDA. As we have discussed before, there are also other entities which are involved in the chamber regulations and design. And so everyone is clear on the REALITY of how chambers are run for off-shore diving and for the military....there is a doctor ultimately responsible for all MEDICAL hyperbaric activities. The real way it works is this; a remote site medical personnel who is trained and credentialed for their duty and responsibility works under the structure of what is called " standing medical directive " . Under this structure the remote caregiver is given permission to do certain procedures and assume certain responsibilities based on the stated directives. As an example: Directive 1 = worker cuts finger - you apply bandaid Directive 2 = worker lacerates arm - suture wound closed Directive 3 = worker gets bent following dive - recompress and treat according to company approved compression therapy tables And so on. There is a directive for all foreseeable medical scenarios and therefore a well experienced, capable medic is able to work with great autonomy with the professional trust and confidence of the PHYSICIAN that he/she works under. The chambers are also used for " planned o2 decompression diving " and therefore the use of the oxygen is not regulated as a drug, BUT....as soon as the same chamber and same oxygen is used as treatment for a MEDICALLY NECESSARY THERAPY all the rules change and the PHYSICIAN is brought back into the picture. This is the truth about how it actually works in the real world. Ask anyone who has worked in either setting and you will get a resounding " that " . Guest guest
Jay, I disagree with your statement about athletes and hope you will reconsider your stance. Overall, athletes are as diverse a group as the population at large. I know many college-educated athletes who have highly successful careers as lawyers, financiers and even professors after their careers. I know this is off-topic, but it really struck a nerve with me since we have quite a few friends and even a few relatives who are current/former professional athletes. I must thank you for all you have taught me about HBOT, including many areas where I misunderstood or was mislead. I hope to continue to learn much more from your expertise. -- Donna Mom to 21 (serving mission in Spain), Katy 19 (at BYU), Preston 16, Annie 14, Kent 13, Callie 9 (cured from dyslexia), Carson 7, Dawson 5 (brain injured--was severe now mild!) Guest guest
Jay MEDICALLY NECESSARY THERAPY / MEDICAL THERAPY OR MEDICATION Well this is good then because the people in charge of deciding what chambers are used for will never say that hyperbarics is a " medically necessary therapy " for my son with autism or a child with CP. So as long as the people in control won't admit it is needed then we should have no problems. We are just stupid people that probably can't read, wasting our time and money. You know what, I frankly don't give a rat's butt. I have given my child a chance at life and you never called me or knocked on my door or even put out a T.V. advertisement telling us about hyperbarics. It was a blessing from God not you that I found out about it. I called just about every treatment center in the middle and eastern U.S. and all I got was we will check him out and decide if we think hyperbarics will work for him. I had to beg the wonderful people at the Ability Camp to treat him. They had never treated a child with autism before him but they said yes. We did it, on our own. They have no doctors there, just wonderful caring people. And guess what, we're still alive 5 years later. There are doctors out there making millions on brain injured children, not mine. We spent 8 years doing everything we could find that would not hurt him and nothing helped. We spent 14 hour days working with him with no breaks even on Christmas for years. Parents of brain injured children are special people, they will do whatever it takes to help their children. They are intelligent. They are sad. They are what you can never be unless you have a child with a brain injury. I have it easy. I'm not sure how some get out of bed in the morning, of course some never make it to bed. Guest guest
Jay, I, also, have to respectfully disagree with your statements regarding professional athletes and hyperbaric chambers. I am a former 6 year NFLer with a MBA and a successful career. More importantly, I have a son with CP whom I treat with HBOT in our home based chamber. I am able to perfom the protocol very astutely and I can spell my name. Please do not stereotype! Guest guest
Well Rose- Why don't you just stand right up and kiss that rat's butt that you wouldn't give on this one !?! What the hell do you mean with all the talk about " never called you, knocked on your door, put out an advertisement " ?? Is this intended to be a coherent sentence ? Are you saying that we're at fault for not letting you in on our little hyperbaric secret ?? You know anyone out there making millions on brain injured children ?? Using Hyperbarics ?? I'd love to know who. I feel as though I have a pretty good handle on how the hyperbaric world turns and I can promise you that there isn't anyone making MILLIONS on brain injured children using hyperbarics. And there are very, very few doctors that make millions at anything (except maybe pharmaceutical development). " You're great, you're a doctor, we bow to you, we think you are wonderful, you deserve more money. " - well now, I believe I detect a tone of sarcasm here. Who are the other " we " in this one ? If the " we " collective really believes I deserve more money then feel free to send it on !! My address is at the bottom of every reply and message. Lord knows where I'm going to store it though....with all my millions from HBOT already. And ask your football friend about the idiots he played with. I know there are very competent guy's who play sports and then lead subsequent productive, successful lives. Ask him about how intelligent or successful some of them are, look at how our children idolize the players and mimic their behavior. Ask him if we could find any better sports figures to hold up as role models. If we could place another idol on the sports pedestal who didn't project to our children all the scandal, drugs, violence, immorality, steroids, wife beating, un-faithfulness, lying and cheating....well then maybe, just maybe America wouldn't have the stereotype of sports figures that they do in their minds. Maybe I wouldn't use it as a general example either, but until then I believe many of the readers understood what I was trying to illustrate Jay A Rain, DMT, CHT Director South Coast Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Care Center 3 Professional Park Drive Webster, Texas 77598 281.554.8848 " He Heals most Successfully those in which he has the most confidence " - Galen RE: [ ] chambers for sale Jay MEDICALLY NECESSARY THERAPY / MEDICAL THERAPY OR MEDICATION Well this is good then because the people in charge of deciding what chambers are used for will never say that hyperbarics is a " medically necessary therapy " for my son with autism or a child with CP. Guest guest
Jay Yes, I am not happy about the fact that I spent thousands of dollars on doctors and there is this treatment that actually works that no one bothered to mention. I take every opportunity to tell people about it. My kids wish I would stop sometimes. But if you have met me then you have been told about Hyperbarics. I go to autism meetings to get the word out and I called DAN and all the other autism " helpers " four years ago but they would not listen to me. I am glad they are finally listening to someone. As far as you making money off hyperbarics, I was not talking about you, you are not a doctor, are you? I wasn't talking about hyperbaric doctors either. I was talking about all the other neuros that keep telling people that it doesn't work. Then they do absolutely nothing. Or worse they cut on the poor little kids. I'm sorry you're not making a fortune on hyperbarics. Is this why you are so mad at athletes because they make so much? I don't get mad at them but I don't support them either. I do not watch or go to their games and I do not buy their stuff. That goes for movie stars too. But they have done nothing to me and they are helping to get the word out about hyperbarics. Maybe they have doctors backing them up, maybe you are right. Like I said I don't care. As far as them being bad role models for our kids, everything begins at home. Parents should not blame others for the way their kids turn out. Parents spend no time with their kids these days and then they want to blame everyone else when they mess up. At our church, I chaperone everything because no one else will but mostly because I want to. There are as many good athletes out their as bad ones and some great ones that give a lot back to the community. I am just tired of anyone trying to keep a parent from helping their child. I have been on this list for a long time and I do nothing except tell people how well my son is doing and fight like crazy with the people who try to scare parents from getting their own chamber. So anyone who comes on and talks the big talk about chambers being too hard for parents to run or too expensive, dangerous or illegal. Then I come out with the boxing gloves on. Write what you want, and expect others to do the same. That is what these list are all about. But try not to take everything so personal. I hope you have a good weekend, I really do. Guest guest
Jay obviously these people are not willling to listen. Please don't patronize them anymore that they allready are. As you and I all can clearly see they are here to argue the fact. I told them allready use the portable it does help yes. I have seen great results from it.In fact Im in favour of it. I happen to love the device. I just think they need to stick with the guidelines that come with the device. Unless they are trained otherwise. What else are they asking for. I even told them I would have used one myself. I think the Oxyhealth chamber is the best on the market. Recently I started to get one for myself. I love that Chamber. Samir is a great guy think the world of him he would not put nothing out there that was not benificial to these parents. He really does care about the well being of these children. However Rose Pat and a few others are here to get you upset. The more they see you responding it seem's the more upset you are. That is what they are seeking to do. I have played this game in the past. I seen this and it takes you no where. You loose freinds and people that you care about on the list. Take it from me. Step back let them through the words. I was a guilty one for some time. I can tell you I learnt nothing from it all. except stay away and try not to respond anymore out of anger. I was the worlds leading anger responder. Guest guest
Darin, What are you doing? Why? Noone is trying to make anyone upset. I'm just trying to stop all the scare tactics. Parents have the right to help their children. You did. Rose Re: [ ] chambers for sale Jay obviously these people are not willling to listen. Guest guest
The topic of protocol and type chambers preferred keeps coming up time and time again! Every time someone new to the list signs on this question will undoubtedly spark these discussions again as they have in the past. MY HUMBLE SUGGESTION IS TO BUNDLE THEM UP IN A NEAT PACKAGE WITHIN THE ARCHIVES! THE NEXT PERSON SHOULD BE REFERRED THERE TO PRINT OUT THERE OWN LITTLE BOOK WITHOUT ANY OF US HAVING TO KEEP GOING THRU THIS. Re: [ ] chambers for sale Jay obviously these people are not willling to listen. Please don't patronize them anymore that they allready are.
