NEWPORT NEWS -- Inside a long, cylinder-shaped chamber, Doug lay

on his back in an environment equal to being 50 feet deep in the ocean.

He breathed in pure oxygen.

's ears popped when he first went into the pressurized chamber,

and they popped when he came out 21/2 hours later. But that was a small

price to pay for a treatment that has healed badly damaged gum tissue -

and apparently spared him from major oral surgery.
