Guest guest
Core programs for people with disabilities are under attack. This month's newsletter features several proposals Congress is considering this summer that would make significant changes to important programs, including Head Start, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Medicaid. Congress needs to hear from you now to ensure public policies truly advance the dignity, equality and independence of people with disabilities. Thank you, Kramer Editor, Easter Seals Legislative Action Newsletter ______________________________________________________________________ TAKE ACTION NOW: URGE CONGRESS TO PROTECT HEAD START The School Readiness Act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on May 22. The bill would make changes to the Head Start law and would create a state demonstration program similar to President Bush's proposal to block grant Head Start. This proposal may weaken services and supports to the more than 100,000 children with disabilities who benefit from Head Start. The House plans to vote on the bill this summer. Take action now! Urge Congress to support Head Start. http://www.easter-seals.org/site/R?i=2q6deZlHIqDaIQOLCgommw ______________________________________________________________________ TAKE ACTION NOW: URGE YOUR SENATORS TO PROTECT IDEA The U.S. Senate is debating a bill to revise the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Easter Seals and other disability and early childhood advocates opposed the bill passed in May by the House of Representatives, and will work with Senators to ensure the Senate bill does not erode this landmark civil rights law. Take action now! Urge your Senators to protect IDEA. http://www.easter-seals.org/site/R?i=3MrYuB8x9DLaIQOLCgommw ______________________________________________________________________ TAKE ACTION NOW: URGE YOUR GOVERNOR AND LEGISLATORS TO PROTECT MEDICAID Medicaid is the health care safety net for 44 million low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities. Medicaid is seriously threatened by proposed changes that would cap federal funding to states regardless of need, and permit broad program restructuring that could deny or diminish access to essential health services. Take action now! Urge your governor and state and federal legislators to protect Medicaid. http://www.easter-seals.org/site/R?i=2MF6FyQ_hyzaIQOLCgommw ______________________________________________________________________ IN THE NEWS: MEDICAID FUNDING FOR STATES INCLUDED IN TAX BILL President Bush signed into law a $350 billion tax cut bill on May 28 that includes $10 billion for states to support Medicaid. Medicaid is seriously threatened by the dire budget situation facing nearly all states. Guest guest
, It might be a good idea to contact easter Seals in Houston and ask about their autism services, try to speak with their director, find out about their advisory board etc... Maybe by communicating with them you can have some input in their services and the direction they take.
