Toxic molds may force razing of Cape Cod home by Westmoreland

Thursday, September 26, 2002

While neighbors established a fund to defray expenses of an Abington couple who were forced to demolish their mold-infested house, a Cape Cod couple in a similar predicament were preparing their house for demolition.

Anonymous friends and neighbors established a fund at the Abington ative Bank on Tuesday, the same day Dean and Patrice knocked down their house on Road in Abington.

Bank official Diane O'Donnell said a relatively large number of neighbors were involved in setting up the fund, ``which is a sign that there will be a good response.''

Patrice was reluctant to discuss the fund.

``We don't want people to think we did this for money. Tell them they don't have to do that,'' she said.

Meanwhile, a Cape family also faces the demolition of their Centerville home. Owner Ken Moulton, 53, said, ``We have the four worst toxic molds in our home. Stachybotrys is the worst of all, and here it is.

``The U.S. Army has called stachybotrys an agent of biological warfare and it is a cousin of anthrax,'' Moulton said.

Moulton said he and his wife, Virginia, as well as their 27-year-old retarded quadriplegic son, Kenny Jr., daughter , 29, and 9-year-old granddaughter, Bridget, have suffered from a number of ailments, including headaches, diarrhea and general malaise as a result of mold exposure in their Hawser Bend home.

Moulton claimed state and local building authorities ignored code violations in the home that ultimately gave rise to toxic mold growth.

Donations to the Family Fund can be made in person or by mail to the North Abington ative Bank, 6 on Ave, PO Box 68, Abington, Mass., 02351. The phone number if 781-878-0045.
