Dear All,

My cat, Sugar, has been sick for two days with hair balls and

vomiting for the first time in his life. He is 1.5 yrs old. My other

cat died after 18 yrs and then 6 months later I got this one, August

of last year...So I have only had him for a year and 3 months.

Man I love this cat. Sugar is the sweetest cat, always with me when

I am on the computer and on my lap. I had been sick with a

respiratory bug and could not get with family over the Thanksgiving

holiday. I missed all the normal gathering and turkey and stuffing.

But Sugar sayed by my side and kept me company.

At 11 pm Saturday Dec 11 I came home to find more 'wet packages' of

food and hair balls on the carpet. He was no where to be found.

Finally he came out after calling him for a long, long time and was

very lethargic. His breathing was labored and fast.

One hour later I found myself on a foggy road to the emergency,

about one half hour from my home. And one hour ago I was told my

cat, my sweet pet who helped me through some trying times during the

passing of my father, is now dying.

My cat apparently has a white shadow masking his heart and part of

the lungs per the xray. The doctor said it is either a heart

condition or a tumor (most likely cancerous). But he does not know

for sure and there is nothing that can be done either way. I learned

all of this for $200. And for another $60 he can be put to sleep,

relieved of suffering and for $50 more they will take him to 'rest'.

I took him home, alive breathing fast and deep. I was just not ready

to say goodbye. I have never even taken any photos with him! Now I

wish I had. He is now resting under my bed scared that I will take

him to the vet again. But the vet gave him a shot of Compazine. So

he is now much more relaxed. The doctor said when his breathing gets

extremely labored I should bring him back for euthanasia (he is not

suffering right now according to the doc).

I just needed more time.....

Any way I wanted to share this with you all, because I now know what

it is like to loose some one unexpectedly. My dad died after along

battle. But this...this is just something totally unexpected. And I

wanted you all to know how much it hurts, and yet how important your

job is to the families that you serve. You may not realize it,

during your routine work. But what you do: getting meds to a

patient, on time and the right meds is extremely important. It is

as important as the technician who takes an xray, or the doctor who

diagnoses, and the nurse who administers, and the surgeon who tries

to clean up a mess, and the receptionist who has to see the tears as

you pay the bill.....

It does not matter that the patient is a cat or a dog or a parrot or

a father or your girlfriend...What matters is the soul that you

love, the one that you will miss.....

I pray that you all have a spiritual awakening this holiday

season...and that you realize that the lives you help to save are as

important as the lives that you touch, even if your service can not

save that life. You, doing what you do, helps the loved ones of

those who may pass on; to know that all was being done for that

person or animal.

That is the message that this post is about. For some may say that

it has nothing to do with pharmacy. And perhaps you would be right.

But it has to do with healthcare and how we take care of the health

of our patients: physically, mentally, and spiritually . I wanted

you to know how grateful I am to the vet/doctor, vet tech and

receptionist who had to deal with me, my surprise, my fears and my

grief.

Sugar is resting under the bed...but I do not know if he will

survive to see tomarrow. I may come home and he will be gone, or I

may have to bring him in to be put to sleep. Either way I am

eternally grateful to the medical staff for their kindness.

OH yeah! A young woman in the parking lot saw me crying... she also

had heard me say that I did not have 800 dollars to give my cat IV

hydration therapy (which may prolong his life, but not cure him).

She had received a gift of a dog/puppy from her husband who is in

Iraq. She was there because the dog was breathing heavy and

vomiting. The doctor also told her that the dog would die. But she

believes that the transporting of the dog cause him to be sick.

Anyway she gave me a $100 bill! She felt that she must do this. And

I did not know what to say except 'thank you'. In my life time I

have given down and out some money. But I never expected any return.

This money will be used to put my cat to sleep when the time comes...

God bless you all, and may you have a greater appreciation of the

service that you all provide others, especially during this holiday

season.

Love and Peace,
