Guest guest Posted January 22, 2001 Report Share Posted January 22, 2001 Ady, Our daughter Alyssa (15yrs.) was diagnosed 6 mos. ago after 1 1/2 yrs of symptoms. We had the rash, fever (never at the same time), the joints followed. Over Christmas we had our first " stress " related flare. Alyssa is a Nanny to a 4 yr. old boy and his 4 mos. old sister. The baby became very ill and was in the neonatal ICU for 2 weeks. Her heart was infected and enlarged. She was not expected to make it. By the afternoon of the day after she went into the ICU, Alyssa was in a full blown flare. We had everything happening at once. She " crashed " in a big way. It was almost impossible to try and get into control. Her stress level was huge and her symptoms mirrored that. We ended up in the Rheum. for a round of meds. to get it back down. Thankfully the baby came home, but is still not out of the woods. Alyssa is back into control and now understands that there is a connection. We are actively looking at ways to prevent it again. Guest guest Posted January 23, 2001 Report Share Posted January 23, 2001 I'm not sure about stress as an initial trigger for JRA but I know that my daughter (14 poly JRA) seems to have more active disease when she is under alot of stress. She has also had a flare to a joint that had actually improved due to an injury at school. Many pieces to this JRA puzzle I guess..... So I think your experience is probably not all that unusual. In our 's case, it was physical stress-- She slipped on a swimming pool stair. Within hours her ankle was rather large. We thought she had twisted it. Little did we know that JRA was entering our lives. was diagnosed with pauci JRA a couple months later, and eventually progressed to poly JRA. I had recently gone through a seperation with my husband...and being that sami is a full on daddys girl...it was a very stressfull time. the whole time we were seperated...she was miserable....her flares seemed never ending and she was hit hard with night sweats and fevers. As soona stmy husband and i got back together....everything seemed to settle down a bit. Guest guest Posted January 23, 2001 Report Share Posted January 23, 2001 hi ady, several of the worst flares of my life have been after heart breaking stresses. i am talking about the crippling you completely kind of flares. in high school, after my first love moved away and we realized long distance relationships were impossible, i shot out of remission like a cannonball. i stayed nearly crippled for a year. my heart was broken, and i hurt so bad i could hardly take it. it was so defeating, i hated it. there arent any meds that help broken hearts, so i just had to wait out enough time to get over it. later, my papa died. i dont even like to remember that one, also right before my senior year sweetheart. thank God i only had 2 high school sweethearts that i really cared about! the opposite can be just as true. when life is just going so good you cant stop smiling, i am going and going just like energizer bunny, and smiling like crazy. i love those times. i love them so much i will run myself til i run out of gas, cuz i just want to do it all, lol. goodluck, brandy _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest guest Posted January 25, 2001 Report Share Posted January 25, 2001 Hi, Though I haven't heard about it in regards to children with JRA, there are many adults with RA and Still's who either make arrangements with their doctor or take it upon themselves to increase their dose of prednisone right before an event that may be stressful to them. Sometimes it's because of good stress (like travelling on a vacation) or sometimes in the event of bad stress (like a death in the family). I guess after having this for a number of years they can gauge what their reaction may be like and take these steps in advance, as a precaution, to try to avert a bad flare. I'm sorry to hear about the baby that she helps care for. I hope the little girl will recover completely. Please do let us know. I also hope that the family your daughter works for realizes how very lucky they are to have found someone as special as your Alyssa. There definitely does seem to be a connection between stress and an increase in arthritis symptoms. I'm glad that, with some help, Alyssa was able to control her flare. I think right about now that has finally run out of gas How long was it this time? His tank stayed full for about 5 months. That's pretty good mileage. Guest guest Posted January 25, 2001 Report Share Posted January 25, 2001 Hi Ady, I too think that there's some correlation between stress, be it physical or emotional, and the symptoms of arthritis. I've heard many people say that their symptoms came on either during or right after some sort of difficult and stressful situation. What worries me a bit about this is that people may feel that something they did caused their child's arthritis to happen. Especially in the beginning, when you first get a diagnosis. When you keep asking why or what might we have done differently. They may want to accept blame for something that they didn't have responsibility for. Lots of people get a divorce or move and not all of their children get arthritis. It may have played some role, been somewhat of a contributing factor, but it's just one piece of the puzzle. Then again, now that you've got me thinking, when we get stressed out our bodies are more vulnerable. Don't they say that stress weakens the immune system? I wonder why, then, if this is an autoimmune disorder, that would even work? Stress might, theoretically, lower the immune system response ~sort of like some of the meds our kids take~ and cause a lessening of symptoms. No? Oh, I'm not so sure. Just rambling on here. In our case, the children's Dad and I were separated for some time before got JRA. I think we would likely have had more, instead of less, stress in our lives if we had continued living together. Guest guest Posted January 25, 2001 Report Share Posted January 25, 2001 Ady when the body is hit with a emotional or physical blow it reacts i am not sure but sept 1999 my mom passed away feb 2000 melissa couldnt walk stressful yes emotionally could that had been the blow ? i dont know she can fall or bump something and it will trigger swelling my hubby has a history of DVP deep vein phlebitis a blood clot he was doing great til he bumped his leg the clot started back up spent 8 days in the hospital but doing good now its the bodys reaction to trama over use of the joint ? maybe the bodys reaction ? maybe JRA is a immune problem so it could be the bodys reaction to sent extra things to that part of the body which is fluid that makes the joint swell the bodys reaction to protect that part i know that with my experience i just tell melissa to be very careful and talk with her about anything that might stress her Robbin Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted January 25, 2001 Report Share Posted January 25, 2001 Ady we live in Atlanta Ga suppose to be warm most of the time lololol but we do get the COLD weather and the wet weather both effect melissa sometimes when its cold and damp i try and keep the affected joints warm since this effects melissa in about every joint its hard but keeping her inside most cold days and just to school and home is good so far I have noticed her mood swings also this could be due to JRA shes walking now compared to a year ago with no assistance but i have a feeling stress both physical and emotional has a impact on this Robbin Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've often wondered if these were due to the stress she coped with last year or something to do with medication and arthritis. I gotta tell you guys, it is great to know that you can compare stories and find similar patterns in our children. thanks.... Guest guest Posted January 25, 2001 Report Share Posted January 25, 2001 Hi again Yup, I sent Megs for therapy and have found out that children experience depression the same as adults, they just don't have the same kind of coping skills that adults have. You know, sometimes I look at her and I get so proud of how far she has come. She thought initially that she had done something wrong to have gotten arthritis, but is much better these days. She can even share the odd " joke " about it, which makes the times she is really sore a little easier to bear. Anyhow.... there you have it! I love reading about where you all live! Guest guest Posted January 26, 2001 Report Share Posted January 26, 2001 Ady i spent this morning in the ER with melissa we have talked on here about stress and moods and is it a sign of a flare coming on well my step dad went through cancer surgery monday the day before melissa was moody wednesday melissa was moody and thursday we went on a field trip and walked a whole lot friday this morning she couldnt get out of bed her knees were hurting so bad and swollen i think its all related some way today shes back on crutches but this is the ups and downs of JRA chemical imbalances just before a flare? could this be a sign for us to know whats ahead tantrums or over whelming happiness? we need to keep a day by day record of this also how the childs moods were and the foods they ate Robbin Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted January 26, 2001 Report Share Posted January 26, 2001 Ady melissa is 13 now and when she gets down and painful she will ask why do i have to hurt so much why did he put this on me these kids have so much to deal with beside this JRA some dealing with the teenage years some dealing with peers and the everyday stress and they express their stress in many ways and just as adults its not good to hold that in you know some kids just like to go out for ice cream some just to mcdonalds to make them feel better little things help Robbin Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted January 28, 2001 Report Share Posted January 28, 2001 Coincidentally my husband and I split and all my 's symptoms flared together. We went from mild undx left knee swelling to 20+ joints. Stress is correlated but not the cause. The RA was there in an underlying state, we don't know all the triggers.
