We lost one of our members last week to complications of pneumonia, Lori Varela. To her husband Tony and children, and Ben, our thoughts are with you during this time. Your mother was quite an incredible lady and will not be forgotten. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all those she has touched. > > Lori aka Robomom was always available to listen, advise or just give a cyber hug in times of need. Having lived with arthritis for many years, she was a true Arthritis Warrior, never letting it get her down. Her advice was invaluable to those less experienced, like myself. She possessed compassion and a gentle caring, which was obvious to all those that knew her, even those who had never met her in person. Lori joins Di, Sandy and the other Warrior Angels watching over us. > > We will host a Memorial Chat for Lori on Thursday December 14th at 9:30pm. Please come join us as we mourn her passing and rejoice in her life by sharing our thoughts and memories of an extraordinary person. > > This is not the first time I have lost one of my online support friends and it gets more difficult each time. It is not something I ever want to experience again. Lori was young, she had children, she was just like so many of us. Lori's death reminds that we are not invincible, none of us are. Let us learn from this how important it is for those of us with auto immune types of arthritis to report all signs for infection to our doctors and to make sure that the treatment ordered is followed through. Our immune systems are not like those of a healthy person and special care is needed, especially when taking DMARDs. PLEASE take care of yourselves. > > --------------------------------- > Ron's Ramblin's > (ron@...) > Ron aka IndyRon > > Wow, what a week this has been. The news of the death of Lori (Robomom) took us all by surprise. While I did not know Lori as well as some of you, I remember talking to her in chat on the " old site " . I remember that she was one of the most positive and upbeat people that I had talked with at that time. No matter how she felt, she was always focused on getting past it and on the next thing on her list. Back long ago, I posted a few times on ASA, she was one of those who responded to me with encouragement and hope. She was positive and personal in her approach. Her positive attitude and desire to beat the odds were infectious. While I did not know her well, I can honestly say " Thank you, Lori, for touching my life and helping me when I really needed it " . My thoughts are with Her family and their sadness in the loss of a mother and a wife. > > Lori should stand out as a positive influence to each and every one of us. The store manager tells him he has just what he's looking for! A beautiful parrot named Chet that sings Christmas carols. > > He brings the husband over to a colorful but quiet bird. The man agrees that Chet certainly is pretty, but he doesn't seem to be much for singing. The manager tells him to watch as he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a lighter. > The manager then clicks the lighter and holds it under Chet's left foot. Immediately Chet starts singing; " Silent Night, Holy Night. " The husband is very impressed with Chet's singing abilities and watches as the manager moves the lighter underneath Chet's right foot. Chet now starts to sing " Jingle Bells, Jingle All the Way. " The husband says Chet is perfect and that he'll take him. > > The husband rushes home to his wife and insists upon giving her this wonderful gift immediately. He presents Chet and starts to explain the parrot's special talent. Demonstrating, he holds a lighter under Chet's left foot and the bird sings " Silent Night. " He then moves the lighter under the right foot and Chet lets loose a round of " Jingle Bells. " The wife is absolutely impressed, and with a mischievous grin asks her husband what happens if he holds the lighter between Chet's legs instead. > > Curious the husband moves the lighter between the bird's legs, and the bird begins to sing- > Chet's Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire! > > Check out all the jokes at http://www.arthritisinsight.com/fun/jokes/index.html. I've heard some people say, " Accept your limitations. " I'm not sure accepting them is the way to go. I prefer to challenge those limitations, work around them, finding alternate ways of achieving the same goal. Every week I'll share some tips I've found to work around those annoying limitations and I hope all of you will send in your tips too. We may not be the next Martha , but sometimes the simplest things can help so much. > > Inexpensive Holiday Gifts: > The Top 10 Things to Give this Year > > 1. Your Time. > How many of you are too busy with you own lives to give your time to others? Being busy is an excuse and a reason not to go out of your way. People need you and love you. They want to see you. Let them in. Let them have time with you. > > 2. Your Support. > How many of you really support the people in your life? What I mean by support is encouragement and reasons to try something new, not 10 different reasons why it won't work. Just because it didn't work for you, doesn't mean it won't work for them. And, just because it didn't work for them in the past, doesn't mean that it won't work this time. There's nothing better than telling a person that they can do whatever they want in this world. > > 3. Your Acceptance. > This may be a toughie for some of you. This means unconditional love and the ability to love someone for who they are and not what you want them to be. It means giving up how you think their life should go, and accepting them for what they want to do with their lives. This is the greatest gift that you can give to the people in your life. > > 4. Your Attention. > How many of you really listen to the people in your life? For everyone who just said " of course I do, " then why are the people in your life asking you to repeat what they just said? It's because they know that you didn't hear them. Take a few minutes, stop what you are doing, and focus on the people who you love. Aren't they worth it? And who knows, you may even learn something that you thought you already knew. > > 5. Your Forgiveness. > Forgiving people for past mistakes and hurts is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. After all they are only human. Plus, I'm sure that you haven't been the perfect human being either. Keeping hurt and anger in your life is just an excuse not to get close to people for fear that they will hurt you again. > > 6. Your Patience. > How many of you can't even be with the people you love because they are taking too long to tell a story or are taking longer that " you think " to complete a project that you think should take less time to get done. How do you know that there isn't a better way to do something if the people around you always have to do it your way? Having patience with people shows them that they are respected and loved. Isn't this a great gift to give for the holidays? > > 7. Your Love. > People want to know that they are special in your life and that you care about them. If there are things that are keeping you from loving them such as conversations that you want to have with them, but you're afraid, my advice is to say it. Sometimes you have to take a risk to achieve an open and rewarding relationship. Take the risk and give your love. > > 8. Your Ideas. > Sometimes people want to move forward in their lives but they don't know how. You may know something that they never thought of. And who knows, your ideas may change somebody's life. So go ahead, don't be afraid to share what you know. > > 9. Your Smile. > There is nothing better that entering a room and seeing someone smile when you walk in. Right then and there you know that your presence makes a difference in their life. A smile is easy. You just grin upward. Plus, you burn many more calories than from frowning. > > 10. (Yummy with Champagne.) " > 1 pint sour cream > 2 jars supermarket black caviar > 1 very large onion (chopped fine) > 8 hard boiled mashed and 2 tsp of mayo to hold them together > In a 1 in high dish or pie plate-spread the egg mixture flat > Place the onion on top of the egg > Spread sour cream over the onion layer. > Then refrigerate, until just before serving > Drain the caviar very well in a strainer then carefully spread over the sour cream > (GOOD caviar does not need draining) > Serve with toast points and wedges of lemon > > Crab Tartlet Appetizers > 1 can flaky biscuits > 6 oz. drained lump crab meat (or use fresh)(if using canned rinse and squeeze out well) > 2 green onions chopped > 1/4 C grated cheddar cheese > 1/4 C mayo > 1/2 tsp lemon juice > 1/2 tsp Tony Chachere Seasoning (Donna-if you are reading this I do not know what this ingredient is. Can you please clarify for me?) > 1/3 C drained chopped water chestnuts > 1/4 C grated Monterey Jack or Co-Jack cheese > Split biscuits into 3 pieces (the flaky biscuits pull apart in layer very easily) > Spray mini muffin tins with cooking spray. > Mix crab and remaining 7 ingredients > Fill each pastry with this mixture > Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes > (These freeze well-then reheat in microwave or oven at 350 degrees for 10 to 20 minutes) > > Mexican Corn Chip Dip > 2 large tomatoes-peeled and chopped > 3 or 4 green onion chopped > 1 small can green chiles-diced > 3 tbs olive oil > 1 1/2 tsp garlic salt > Stir and refrigerate at least 3 hrs. before serving. > Serve with tortilla chips. > > Now THAT should give you some ideas for things to serve for holiday entertaining. " > > " I am thinking about you and praying you find the relief and courage you need to do what you think is the right thing. I just wanted to tell you that I was at the exact same place as you…before both my new knees. I was scared, in so much pain (my pain was a 11 on a scale of 1-10), I don't think I slept for months, I know I cried daily, taking pain pills like candy. I could not walk across the street and used a wheel chair for most of my business (grocery shopping, airports, family outings). I had injections, drugs, everything....finally I decided to bite the bullet and have my left knee done. After the initial surgery pain, I felt I could fly, dance, walk...sing ... it was such a liberating experience to be free of that pain. So what do I do? Hike the mile, sit down with my thermos and a good book.....they usually come back for me (LOL) when they are finished with their hike. " > > " I am grumpy a lot!!! And I hate it. Anyway, one day my daughter and I were sitting on the rocking chair watching TV and just hanging out. She stretches out her little legs, and feet, and toes and starts to wiggle them. She says.. And she said " whenever you are grumpy you should wiggle your toes " ... this really put a smile on my face.....and I have noticed when I get real grumpy I think about wiggling my toes and the smile goes back on my face... and hopefully some of the grump is gone. > > My kids are my best medicine.
