We just got a really big, heavy comforter for her bed. Trying to get her to wear sweat pants to bed, unfortunately she doesn't like the feel of that yet. The hot morning showers work fairly well, just have to make sure we get up early enough. Last night and this morning it was her ankles. This morning her left ankle was swollen and she had to favor the right leg, then the right knee started hurting. I try not to let her sit around and get even stiffer. I let her sit with ice for 10 minutes then I have her walk around and do little things, to get moving about. God Bless, Sandi A. Guest guest Posted November 17, 2000 Report Share Posted November 17, 2000 hi sandi, she sits with ice on a joint and doesnt make her stiffer? ooh, makes me stiff just thinking bout it. well, you know whats weird? i can only have a few blankets on my bed. i sleep with a comforter too but not a very heavy one. if the covers are heavy, i cant move very well in my sleep and i wake up sore and stiff, so i usually use an electric blanket (all year long), but my cats that i love so dearly chewed up my cord and i was afraid it short out and burn me up in my sleep so i dont use it anymore and havent been able to get a new one yet. i feel the difference too, especially now that its so cold here. i am a daddys girl though, so i'll just blink a few times and he'll replace it for me, lol. i am thinking bout getting a waterbed, the thought of that water giving way and cushion to my joints that dont have very much cushion of their own, and the heater in those things makes me go ga-ga, lol. you know what else is neat? i saw these mattress pads that are heated, i thought bout one of those but unlike the electric blanket, you can only lay on top of it instead of wrapping all up in it like a mummy, ....like me. anyway, thanks brandy _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest Posted November 22, 2000 Report Share Posted November 22, 2000 I recently got katiebug a heated mattress pad- ordered it from jcpenney.com what a blessing. she's one of those kids who runs hot, and she hates blankets- sometimes i'm lucky to get her in her pj's. even when her room is a little chilly, the mattress pad keeps her warm enough so she's not stiff in the morning. I bought it in England when I was there a couple years ago and love it. I fill that bottle up and it's nice and it's nice to get the bed warm. It doesn't work as well as a heating pad because it doesn't stay hot all night but it works for a little while. Guest guest Posted November 28, 2000 Report Share Posted November 28, 2000 This sure is a frustration with Skyler. I KNOW he hurts more when he is cold and he too perpetually kicks off the covers. Though we live in Arizona, the cost of heating the house is to high at the moment and we have to make due with a space heater. There is only one for the whole house and it is usually about 60 degrees [sorry but to us that is cold]. Last night I woke up and covered him about 5 times. Once he got mad and fought with me about it. Guess I should look into a heat pad too. Kelsey can be in her deepest sleep and if I put just a sheet over her she kicks it off immediately! Her doctor suggested pajamas w/ feet... that went over like a led kite, she won't even sleep in socks! We're definitely getting one of these heated mattress pads. She did have a waterbed, which was nice and warm, but she hated it and refused to sleep in it after falling out one night. I don't think she liked the motion of it, so we got her a regular bed. Guest guest Posted November 28, 2000 Report Share Posted November 28, 2000 hi david, do you have ceiling fans in your home? they reduce heating bills cuz air, especially heat is more evenly circulated. if you do have them, flip the switch on the base to make the blades turn counter clockwise, we all do that here in north carolina cuz it blows the heat back down to the floor. you could also look on E-bay.com and place a bid on another space heater for skylers room for just a couple of bucks, i bid all the time and nobodys bidding right now cuz its soooo close to Christmas so you probably wont be outbid. try it, if ya need any help, just say so. love, brandy ________________________________________________________________________________\ _____ Get more from the Web. Guest guest Posted November 29, 2000 Report Share Posted November 29, 2000 i keep my house at 68 to 70 maybe 72 degrees due to melissas asthma she does good at this temp when she gets under cover she kicks it off but i know its a normal temp in the room if she does but i have noticed she will cover herself up when she gets cold i know shes older now i use to dress her in PJs but shes out of that stage she sleeps in gowns or t shirts the fans reversal is a good idea i also use electric heat in the hall and gas heat in the front of the house in the kitchen i will use a pot with water in it and just let it boil this helps also Robbin Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Due to the cost and being unable to run the heater (that bumps our bill about $100 month) there really is no warm air to circulate. running the fans would just increase the chill factor. Guest guest Posted December 2, 2000 Report Share Posted December 2, 2000 I tried calling the poer company, they referred me to United Way, who referred me to other groups who referred me to other groups, who reffered me to the groups that had referred me to them. I got so fed up with this silly run around I gave up on help through that route. Right now they put this special meter on the wall that we can buy power on a card, swipe it on the unit and it registers, giving us that many killowatt hours. They take 50% of every dollar paid towards past bill amounts. It helpd us to stay very conscious of how much power we use and has helped to keep things turned off. Biggest culprit by far is the water heater. If we shower or wash laundry alot it really eats up the time. The heater is a problem as it refuses to shut off once turned on. We tried running it for just an hour to take the edge off the cold. AAfter turning it off at the wall it ran constant for another 18 hours, using up about 4 days worth of power at our normal rate. Ah well, The heating pad is a fun one to consider. ALL over the box it sais " DO NOT USE ON INFANTS OR PEOPLE SLEEPING OR UNCONSCIOUS " . So I am a little worried about it being too hot for Skyler to sleep on. I placed two towels on top of it and set it on low, but by morning it seemed to be too cool to do any good. Tonight I will try it on medium setting and check it regular to insure there is no danger of burning. Guest guest Posted December 2, 2000 Report Share Posted December 2, 2000 Isn't it ridiculous that we know that there are programs to help us out; but they are nearly impossible to find. Sometimes that has to do with the people who work with the companies; they answer the phones and do not have the information or are not aware of the program so they say one doesn't exist and send us to another group. I've found out that one group that can usually find the answers are the ones who deal with developmentally disabled clients. When Meghann was younger she had a lot of issues dealing with her birth condition of PRS, although we did not avail ourselves to all the programs they had (she didn't need them) I know that most of the centers have vast knowledge of what is out there. We've been very fortunate with Meghann, either she has a high threshold to pain or her pain level is not that high. I know she has active JRA going because her contractures are getting worse and she is more tired than usual but she rarely complains if ever about pain. Just takes more hot baths and curls up under blankets. Little ones are harder because they can't tell you anything or what they can tell you is limited. As a parent you want to make everything all better and is frustrating not to be able to. I hope that you can find a good working solution for Skyler. I worry too because this year is suppose to be colder and wetter than usual. They are already telling us that gas (heating) prices are going to be high.
