Patty,

his rheumy should be monitoring his blood levels. If it looks like he is

slightly anemic I can give you herbal ideas that helped us.

Hi AJ,

Thanks for all your help! I'll be sure to check out rxlist.com. We live

in Weston, Wisc., which is just below central WI. How about you?

I called the doctor today ('s rheumatologist) and she said, " yes, 60

mg is a lot, but we really want to kick it out of his system (his pain

has been so great) and soon we'll go to 50 mg, then 40 mg, and if all is

going well, we'll continue going down by 5's " . Does that sound realistic

to you?

His appetite has been increasing! is small anyway for 17. He was

135 lbs (now 128 lbs.) so he didn't lose too much and he's 5'7 " . He's

the smallest guy on the football team (out of 75 boys). He goes to

school from 8 - 11:30 a.m., comes home, has lunch, and takes a nap. I'm

hoping that will help with the sleep thing. He wakes up several times in

the night but can usually fall back to sleep. His doc suggested Benadryl

to help him sleep. Tylonal, not Advil for headaches. He's been taking

two tums in the morning and two at evening for stomach pain and calcium.

Any advise is welcome!!

Patti

Hi Patty,

Try not to worry too much. Like others have said before now, a lot of

times they will prescribe high dose steroid therapy, for short periods

of time. For lots of different conditions, including arthritis. And

often, it's very effective in easing symptoms. When it's used as a

regualr maintenance drug they try to get the dose as low as possible,

while still controlling the symptoms. This is in those cases where the

person doesn't respond well enough to other available therapies or while

they are waiting for another med to become effective, as some need to be

administered for a period of time before levels are built up enough to

start showing effect. Like Methotrexate, one of the DMARDs. Which can

often take 6 weeks or longer to start showing benefits.

If it helps you feel any better, my sister's cat who weighs about 10lbs

takes 10mgs of prednisone daily because she had a problem with benign

tumor growths. That would be considered a high dose to use for long-term

therapy, at 1mg per pound. But the only change in the cat's outward

behavior is that she eats a little more than she used to. And her tumors

have shrunk. She appears to be doing really well.

This may be exactly what your son needs to control his arthritis

symptoms right now. Early aggressive treatment usually has the best

outcome, as this illness can be very aggressive.

Take care,

Georgina
