Dear , Our daughter was diagnosed in November with systemic JRA, she is

11. She has had the rash to some degree ever since. It is usually on her

legs, but it can appear on her arms , back , buttocks, and face. It has

always itched, and we have yet to find real relief. We have bought every

lotion that is sold. We give her zyrtec , an antihistamine, at night, but

I can't really say if it helps or not. If you come up with something, let

me know. Our ped. rheumy says that the rash isn't supposed to itch, but

hers has always itched. We have changed all detergents and soaps to no

avail. I am trying to see if there is a link with her itching with her

intake of chocolate or nuts. Just a thought. We have tried everything.

Good luck.

I haven't noticed any rashes on 's face, but he does get them on his

trunk and under his arms. Also, during times when he's not in a " flare " he

has severe psoriasis on his hands, elbows and fingers. The dermatologist

said there may be a connection.....anyone ever hear of that?

there is a type of arthritis in adults called

psoriatic arthritis. I can't remember much more than

that though.

Hi,

It's sometimes hard to distinguish if the rash is appearing as a

possible side effect of a medication, a different allergic response to

something in the environment, or due to illness itself. I think

psoriasis also entails having dry, flaky, itchy, scaly skin patches. The

rash that my son gets, one of the classic features of systemic JRA,

doesn't have any of these signs. Others do sometimes have an itchy JRA

rash, though. So it's tricky to know for sure. It doesn't help matters

when the rash disappears before the next scheduled appt with the

rheumatologist, who probably would be able to tell if it was JRA

related. According to the experiences of the people I've been in touch

with, the JRA rash is also hard to capture in photographs. It can be

very elusive while at the same time, so commonplace!

Take care,

Georgina

has a rash on her left thigh and her arthritis is in her left

knee( has pauciarticular arthritis) . Her rheumy said it wasnt related

but I think otherwise since thats the only place the rash is present. Are the

rashes you talk about all over or near the affected joints? Teri

Hi:

My daughter, Mickey, (6, systemic jra) frequently gets a dark, scaly rash on the back of her hands that sometimes spreads up her wrists somewhat. It is like severely dry, cracked skin, and sometimes bleeds if we don't keep on top of it with skin cream or oils. At first our PedRhuem just thought it was interesting, but no connection to the jra, now a few years later has mentioned that he has 3 other sytemic patients with the same pattern of dry skin/rash. So far the verdict is "interesting phenomena, probably related, but we don't know why". I haven't been able to detect a pattern on timing with it, though it is definitely worse in winter when it is cold and dry out.

n's rash is mainly on her two legs. When she is in a flare the rash

will be over her entire body. Everyday the rash is a bit different, the

only thing that is consistent is that she gets the rash every evening. At

this time she has no joint pain, just an itchy rash.

Hi ,

try to take her of Wheat products for 2 weeks and see if this makes a

difference. As soon as my daughter gets any wheat products, she gets an

itchy, dry rash. As alternative offer Ryebread, rice pasta, rice crackers

etc.

Hope that helps,

Regina (Daughter of )
