Hello! Welcome! I don't have a teenager. I wanted to ask you a

question. The disease never went into remission? The dr. told us it

*might* go into remission when our daughter is 8 or 9 years old.

I have a 3 year old daughter who has poly-articular.

I have a teenage son, he is 17 and has had JRA since he was 4. He has

poly. He has been threw 3 surgery were he had to have reconstruction of the

joints in his fingers. His next surgery will be on his wrist. He has been

threw it all the teasing, he has played on the high school basketball team

for 4 years and this year he quit. He doesn't like to talk about it. I will

be glad to chat with you.

Hi Lora,

I have a 13 year old son who has had polyarticular JRA for 5 years.

I am finding the beginning of the teen years to be difficult. What

concerns do you have?

Take care, Jana

Hi Alison,

I was just wondering how old your son was, when he had his first

reconstructive joint surgery? Thanks.

Take care,

Georgina

Hi Lora,

I see that you've signed on to the . Welcome :) I think this is

a

great starting point, to meeting other parents whose teen children also

have JRA. Recently, a post was made about different chats specifically

for teens with JRA and some for parents of JRA kids. I'll check and see

if I can find the schedule for you, and resend it. Or maybe others here

will have this info. If you have any specific questions or issues, feel

free to ask and others here will respond. My son will be 11 in April.

Not quite a teen yet but ... pretty soon. What type of JRA does your

daughter have?

Take care,

Georgina

He was 12 years old and six month later they had to go back in and do the

finger that didn't take. His 2nd surgery he was 15 years old. Now it is

time to do his wrist and he is 17.

Its a lot of pain that comes with these surgery. He said after the last

one he wasn't going to have anymore. Right now I am trying to convice he that

he need this. I know once he is 18 he won't have it.

Hi ,

Thanks for sharing those details. It must be hard, especially when you

have to go back in for more surgeries when they didn't work out the

first time. After the post-op pain, did he have better movement/use of

his fingers? Were the surgeries successful? There's another Mom who used

to be on this list whose daughter underwent major jaw surgery, needing

to have her mouth wired shut for 6 weeks. The worst part was that the

end result wasn't what they had expected and try as they might, even

though parents and doctors thought it was in her best interest, it's

been very difficult to convince her to have it re-done. She doesn't want

to repeat all the pain and inconvenience, especially if it may not work.

This is one aspect of living with JRA that we have not had to deal with,

at least not yet. I wish your son the very best and hope for a good

outcome. Keep us updated on how it goes.

Aloha,

Georgina
