I have been trolling through medication info sites such as www.medonline.org.uk (non commercial) where there are more than 30 treatments listed with links to further information. Its all a bit much to take in as a starter. Is there a site with a good summary of what is good/bad ? thanks,
Guest guest
I am struggling right now with my sons meds. My son started his anxiety problems last fall and we went to a psychologist and totally turned everything around. My son did great for 6 months. He was however struggling in school with writing and careless mistakes and has a hyper behavior at times. Decided to start him on Adderal, everything went great for a couple of months and then boom the OCD started back with a vengeance, went from scared of storms to bugs, school, test, etc. Was diagnosed with OCD, took off the Adderal and started Zoloft. He has not been the same child since Zoloft, just weaned him off last week and now he seems to have the control to handle things. I know it has only been a few days without meds, he was struggling last night with homework and writing. I keep thinking that the Adderal is what triggered all this, that was the beginning of the total out of control. But part of me is afraid to start him back on another med. We have an appointment with his doctor next week to start something new and I really want to just stay off right now while things are going well and see what happens. What drives me crazy is I can't figure out if his behavior is due to meds, lack of sleep because of meds, ADD, OCD or just bad behavior. When there aren't any meds involved I feel like we at least know what we are dealing with and he has a clear brain to work on it. I'm not saying that kids don't need meds, and we really were desperate for them at the beginning of the summer. I am probably in denial of his need for them right now and just tired of dealing with them. Adele _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of jchabot Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 7:51 AM Subject: Re: Inability to concentrate & Risperdol?Judy Hi Kim, That's great that these meds are working for your dd! My dd takes zoloft also, and I have found that the abilify helps to stabilize her mood, although she definitely has cognitive dulling from the med. She has bipolar also, but without the zoloft , she's all over the board with her ocd.Actually the abilify has helped some with her anxiety also. From what I understand the antipsychotics are only prescribed for ocd- only patients for those with severe aggression or hallucinations, or if they have tried all SSRI's without relief. I just don't like the idea of my dd on these antipsychotics. I feel they should only be prescribed if absolutely necessary. You have these doctors now adays prescribng left and right extremely dangerous meds for our kids. Sometimes they don't even need them! Just my 2cents Take care Judy
Guest guest
Hi Adele, I heard from several doctors that my son's symptoms were due to anxiety and/or the waxing and waning cycle of OCD. In my gut I knew the prozac and later, the celexa, were responsible. I have no experience with ADD or the other med your son is on, but if after going of of it be became worse on the zoloft, to me it sounds like the zoloft was responsible. If I could start over again I would try cognitive behavioral therapy for 's OCD before trying an SSRI. Of course, it is extremely difficult to find a good therapist, and then it takes weeks or months to get an appt... If you try another SSRI and the out of control behavior returns, make sure you have frequent follow-up visits with the p-doc and listen to your gut feelings. In the case of my son, his out of control behavior led to suicidal thoughts. Gail Medication Okay Group, I have a question, being that I have not been on treatment I was wondering what are the medications that the doctors order and how many a day. I was looking at my insurance and I can get a feel of what it will cost if I knew the meds. dose and qty a day. I was hoping someone can help me. Guest guest
Hi , I am currently on Ribivarin and Pegasys. My insurance covers the Pegasys completely and I pay $10.00 a month for the Ribavarin. It doesn't matter if I am taking 5 a day or 4 (they dropped my dose) the cost is the same. It will all depend on your insurance and what your co pays are. Guest guest
Your doctor will want to do an assesment on you, your state of mind etc.to see if you can handle treatment. If he says yes keep a copy of all your reports yourself so you can see how you are doing. We can give you a site to check your results as you go along and don't forget to make sure he puts you on anti depressents just before you start treatment. Guest guest
Klonopin is an excellent anti anxiety med. It has a long 1/2 life so doesn't wear off quickly and leave you anxious suddenly (ativan does this). It has an excellent side effect profile, meaning almost none. I've been taking it for years. Start with a very small dose. The pill is 0.5mg. You can even cut it into quarters. It works best if kept at an even level in your bloodstream, so you can take some in the am and some in the pm. It helps a lot for sleeping too. Imogene Medication Life has caught up with me and I think it's time for me to consider anti-anxiety medication for myself. I suffer from occassional vertigo and I'm very concerned about an SSRI triggering it. I also don't want to gain the 10 or 20 lbs. that everyone seems to when they start on these meds. Can anyone tell me which drugs have the fewest side effects? ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. It also is great for sleep. The problem is that it can give you a hangover. Some people report that it goes away after a couple of weeks, others say that they always get the hangover. Lastly, if weight gain is a problem then don't take Elavil. It is notorious for causing carb craving and weight gain. http://www.rxlist.com/elavil-drug.htm Best,
Guest guest
A few years back, a doctor prescribed elavil for me for my fibromyalgia - it was horrible - I was spaced out and lay awake all night - the next morning, I felt terrible and very hung over. I've also heard that coming off of it can be very hard and that people should wean themselves off of it very slowly. Going on a gluten free diet pretty much made the fibro 75% better - and adding LDN to the mix has made it 95% better. Guest guest
I had about the same response. I think I had bloating too. The drugged feeling mostly wore off after a couple of days. I had no symptoms to justify this drug, so it's not surprising it didn't help with CFIDS. If you have a good reason for taking this it might be worth trying, but I don't think it's something to throw at this illness out of desperation. Guest guest
you cant judge a medication on 1 night, especially a drug like elavil. need to start low dose and gradually work up. that said, i do use as needed when real;y need sleep for 1-2 nights and it helps my sleep although quite sedated for first half of the next day.  but i would expect the next day sedation to wear off if i was on it for longer , say 3-4 weeks.  cheers From: smalk50@... <smalk50@...> Subject: Re: Medication Received: Wednesday, January 27, 2010, 12:45 PM  A few years back, a doctor prescribed elavil for me for my fibromyalgia - it was horrible - I was spaced out and lay awake all night - the next morning, I felt terrible and very hung over. Guest guest
Yes, too many doctors prescribe too high a dose of elavil to begin with. They did this with my mother, giving her 25mg to start with, causing her a major side effect. I started with 10mg, but IMHO, one might even consider starting with half a pill, if one is very sensitive to meds, and only increase it by 5mg doses. I've known some people with fibromyalgia, who are helped by only taking a small amount of it, or they combine a small amount of it with other meds. - Mark > > > From: smalk50@... <smalk50@...> > Subject: Re: Medication > > Received: Wednesday, January 27, 2010, 12:45 PM > > >  > > > > A few years back, a doctor prescribed elavil for me for my fibromyalgia - > it was horrible - I was spaced out and lay awake all night - the next > morning, I felt terrible and very hung over.
