Guest guest
Gail....Careful with broccoli. Cook it verrry well, it's hard to eat banded or sleeved. I'd try just a tiny bit and see how it works and gradually add more when you are very sure it's going down. On Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:25 PM, Gail <sweetsmile1955@...> wrote: Daphne: Wow! Guest guest
I agree with being careful with broccoli. I still can't eat it, except in soup. I was a chocoholic before my surgery but don't even like the smell of it now. I have found that grilled fish and chicken are my best friend and my husband is getting healthy too. I even like myself in the mirror for the first time in years. It sure makes you feel good to go from a size 22 to a size 4. good luck to all of you and keep up the great work. Guest guest
I too got to a size 4 but I got there with a band. Revised to a sleeve about 6 weeks ago. It is totally possible for anyone. How fast you lose depends on you and how much effort you put into it. Guest guest
Daphne: I had this same problem since many people look askance at you for going to Mexico for a surgery. However, I had to carefully describe my many months of research and what places were the best for me. Even my cousin who works in a hospital in Utah and does research on doctors and any lawsuits or disciplinary measures on them could not find any valid information on the sleeve. There are so many doctors in the US who do not have any information and have not kept up with the studies. There are some...but they are not in abundance. One doctor told my cousin that the sleeve had not been FDA approved. I told her it was a procedure...not an appliance in her body...so there is a lot of mis-information even between doctors. My cousin's diabetic nutritionist didn't even know anything about it either. There are numerous studies....fairly new, but they are all saying the same thing that the sleeve has showed great results. (I think Bipley or someone on this site has the link to some studies). I think it was about 70-80% of the people who had the sleeve done did not have to take anymore high blood pressure or diabetic medicine after a few short weeks. That is a high number considering all of the other surgeries and or meds for those side effects of obesity. I think one study was from Finland, and one from the UK too. So, I will look for those studies to try to get the link. However, as far as going to Mexico for the surgery, the cost for one, their abilities, tools, and types of instruments are equal at this point to the US. They are very clean, and the one thing that really got me to think was the amount of nurses, and medical staff who were going to Mexico and not staying in the US and using their own hospitals and/or insurance or doctors, and getting the surgery. Why would nurses and medical staff who are very familiar with the US hospitals go to Mexico? That is a question that only they can answer...but what was their reason for choosing another country? That says something about the US medical field. One thing that I am seeing more and more here is the advertisement for bariatric surgery now, especially at well-known hospitals. UCSD - University of California at San Diego, a reknowned research and medical school is advertising like crazy for the lap-band and other surgeries. The competition is ON and they are seeing a decline in patients choosing the US hospitals and opting for other countries where the surgical procedures are effective, but better service, longer stays, and more doctor contact and of course cheaper and not insurance hassles. I chose Mexico because my insurance would require me to go through a two-year process of evaluations, fasting, testing, and then opt to say yes or no to a procedure. They would have th say-so on the procedure....no me. So, I was not willing to wait another two years and possibly gain more weight to be told; "No, sorry you don't qualify." If you keep doing the research and go to other sites like Obesityhelp.com and others, you will find a lot of people who are choosing similar paths. I don't know if this helps, but there are a lot of other people on this site who are well-informed and can also help you to explain the reasons to your family! Guest guest
Gail...True. At the time I had my band I was working for Mayo Clinic. At that time they only did bypass. One of the surgeons tried to talk me into bypass and I refused, at that time all I wanted was a band. He said he would do it but truth is, he hadn't ever done them before and no way did I want a newbie operating on me. There are techniques to banding (or any surgery type) that comes with time and practice. I didn't want to be a guinea pig or lab rat. I did my research and I honestly believe that the right doc for me was Aceves. He has the skill, the experience, the reputation, the technique, all the things that mattered to me. So I went to him for my band. Then when I decided I wanted a sleeve instead he was the only doc for me. There are a ton of nurses that go to Aceves. We all know what goes on in US hospitals, we know full well that just because it is in the US doesn't mean it is safe, it means it is in the US. Nothing more. Guest guest
Daphne,I am happy to hear there are other nurses out there who have done their research and still decided to go to Mexico. I am still in the decision stage--still not sure if I am a candidate for the band. (low end BMI). The more and more I read on this discussion board, the more and more I think that if this is something I decide to do---I will choose Dr. Aceves. The few people I have confided in re: banding have responded with shock and "you do not need that". What they fail to see is, at age of 36 my grandfather died of a heart attack. My mother have her first heart attack at age 40, first bypass age 45. Both my parents are diabetic. I have put on 25+ pounds in one year. I am now 36--have done the gain and lose 30lbs three times--and I know I can not do that forever. All of the older women on my dad's side are 250lbs+. I know where I am headed. So for me---I am thinking it is the best option. If I get banded and loose the weight---can they loosen it up to keep me from getting too skinny? I really need to loose 40lb-45lbs and that is pushing it. So do I do it now, or wait til next year when I have gained another 25lbs and do it then? Also, what was the anesthesia like for the procedures?Thank you for listening.~Undecided in Texasaka jen From: Mercer <diamercerhotmail (DOT) com>Subject: RE: [Dr-Aceves-bandster s] I would like to email someone who has had the sleeve surgery @groups. comDate: Thursday, July 17, 2008, 4:34 PM Daphne, My name is diana and I had the sleeve done Aug 9, 2007.
