Yeah, I can sort of relate to this, as my weight loss was a bit lower in the

months that I exercised the most. However, I lost a lot of inches during

that period, and that has slowed down since I've slowed my exercise. You

may well be building some muscle, and this would be denser than fat, making

the scale show a plateau or even a modest gain. I really think a more

important barometer is how your clothes fit. I measure every month, and my

biggest losses in inches tend to be during the months I haven't lost as much

weight. Also, if you eat more when you are exercising, that might be

slowing your loss down. Keep up the exercise, and just be careful what you

eat. I started back to dieting (via Weight Watchers) about 10 months after

my surgery, and that kickstarted my weight loss. Good luck to you!

Don't dispare. I kept losing slowly over nearly 3 years.

In total I have lost 170 pounds.

Exercise and Weight Loss

Has anyone experienced a correlation between exercise and the slowing

of weight loss? I am now almost 8 ½ months out from my surgery, and

although I have lost about 105 pounds, almost 80 of those pounds came

in the first three months after the surgery. At that time I began a

modest exercise program, and immediately experienced my first plateau.

I strained my knee which necessitated me scaling back, and in fact

discontinuing my exercise regime for almost a month. During that month

of inactivity I lost 15 pounds. As soon as I resumed my exercise

routines the weight loss stopped again, and in fact I have gained

almost 5 pounds in the past month. Since April, I have experienced a

net gain of 2 pounds.

I am still about 50 or 60 pounds from my goal, and although I am

pleased to have lost the 105 pounds, I am dismayed to think that the

weight loss might be over in well less than a year. My exercise is

modest, and consists of walking an hour a day, seven days a week, and

working out with dumb bells on alternating days.

I am well aware of the benefits of daily exercise, and don't want to

stop in the hopes that my weight loss will resume, but you can see

that the temptation is certainly there! Looking for suggestions.

Hi,

Muscle weighs more than fat, volume per volume. Your muscle mass is

increasing, that's good. Try measuring the difference in inches,

like how your clothes feel, rather than pounds. After you build

significant muscle mass, the calories will be being burned even when

you are at rest 'cause that's what muscle does.

Hi Everyone,

Here is the dilemma, I was losing fine and then I

started going to the gym. I started about 3 weeks ago

and have not lost a pound since then. I don't want to

stop the exercise but I really would like to continue

to lose. I had surgery on May 10th and have lost 68

lbs since then. Any advice. (I really don't want to

hear about muscle weighing more than fat. I can't

believe I have built that much muscle in 3 weeks.)

Hi Pam:

Don't despair! We all hit a plateau every once in a while. As you know, I was

one of the May 10th Shamu girls. Last week, I didn't lose anything and then I

lost 3 lbs. in 2 days. I've lost a total of 72 lbs. I walk quite a bit, but

haven't gone to the gym lately. Please don't be discouraged. If you will look

at the weight loss chart in the index, I would bet you are right on target with

68 lb. loss.

It may simply be a coincidence, time for a plateau. We all had

them. It may be that your body is just saying " what the heck is

going on " . Either way.. try and be patient. The exercise is of

great benefit and it will all work out.

I agree with . And I always gain a little bit when I start exercising.

I think the muscles hold a bit of water. It will even out. If I were

you, I'd hold off on weighing for a couple weeks. In the beginning, we lose

so fast that you can weigh every day and see losses. But things slow down,

and after the first few months, I went over to monthly weighing so I didn't

obsess over every little up and down.

And plateaus are normal, necessary, and totally frustrating. We've all been

there! :)

Joanne, indeed Pilates is excellent! I was going to a class, but had to cut

back on things that were not necessary. So the Pilates had to go. HOWEVER, I

used the exercises I learned each day when I am exercising. I know that without

exercising, I would not have lost the weight I have!

For me the one thing that has done the most for me is to walk twice a day

........For me it is easier as I have a dog for company. But, you could go

walking listening to your fav music..or just enjoy the quiet......or the people.

I have added Pilates as I finally got a channel back that has that and my Yoga!

Yeah. Pilates is the best for muscles and weight loss.and the Yoga every other

day is good for balance and stretching the muscles.I feel better alternating

between the Pilates one day and Yoga the next. For me.my diet is easy...... I

simply drink a Boost for breakfast and another for lunch and a small regular

dinner. I have bags of dried fruit and Trailmix. . I love the Craisens, dried

plums (Prunes ) I bought the Pnes where the prunes )plums) are seperately

wrapped so each is nice and soft and so sweet. I also hav e the decadent Dark

Chocolate covered prune peieces...Now, that is the healthiest piece of good

stuff ..........You must try them. Good luck to all trying to loose.........And,

of course the less fat on us the healthier we are ( and the better we feel!!!)
