Guest guest
I remember reading in Palmer (I'm going by memory here) that the GENERAL recommended diet for liver disease (with many exceptions for special conditions) is 60% carbohydrates, 20% protein, 10% fat. Some liver conditions require that protein be avoided entirely, but that's her rule of thumb. Palmer points out that this is a good nutritional balance for anyone. I was trying to diet, to remove the enormous weight gain I experienced in the second month. My doctor said that I should concentrate on getting plenty of good food, not less, as a damaged liver can't process and distribute nutrients properly. She said avoiding weight gain was a far lesser concern than providing adequate nutrition. Incidentally, I've had far fewer colds, etc. than before starting Imuran, but that may be because I had to quit work immediately on diagnosis. That was terrible for my retirement finances, but great for my body. I couldn't think properly at that stage of liver disease, so I had no choice beyond quit or be fired. Jobless, I'm able to rest when I want to, I am not travelling (which my job required I do a great deal of), and I avoid crowds. When my husband returns from a business trip, he "quarantines" himself for a day in case he's picked up something travelling. (Tomorrow he makes another trip to China, and he and our doctor are a bit worried about disease. She arranged for him to have Hepatitis A vaccine, for my sake as well as his.) I do find that when I go to a large potluck dinner, I usually have sniffles and aches the next day. I don't know if that's from something contagious or just fatigue. The main viral/bacterial problems I've had since beginning Imuran have been thrush and shingles; both are common among immune-suppressed people, and both should be treated promptly to avoid serious complications. I get the digest form of these posts and your posts hardly ever come through, it just gives your name and says "not in displayable format" I have to come to the site to read what you are posting; if any of the moderators are reading, what is that all about? can it be fixed? I don't want to miss anything! I don't post much but read everything. . . . Pam Pam, I'm a moderator, I receive the digest version, and I have the same problem with "not in displayable format". I can't find information on how to change it; I think it is inherent in the digest format. Does anyone know more about this? Harper
