Hi Jackie,

I wanted to thank you and . I was discussing my son's problems at work the

other day and someone said oh like the boy I saw on 48 hours? It just clicked

for them. I can't tell you what a relief it was to talk to someone who had a

concept of what we deal with at home. I thank you both for sharing your story

and helping to bring ocd out in the open.

Congrats on the baby steps, every little bit is progress forward!!

that's a ditto from me on that too!

When I see people out there that really could use this surgery it is so hard for

me not to be a cheerleader (although I'd feel like a religious fanatic forcing

my opinions without being asked for them).

I certainly hope Dr. R. gets back to doing what he does best!!

Dear ,

Thanks for the suggestion. At this point I feel needs to take

charge and he seems to want to live near the university and wants to be

involved there. He has several courses where he was unable to finish the

class because of not being able to complete an assigned research paper and he

feels that when he has his life under better control, he can apply for an

accomodation on some of the requirements. If this is possible, he will be

about six or fewer credits from his BA. His major is philosophy and

apparently he is very talented in this field. [i am not really qualified to

say, since the only philosophy course I have had was one on the History and

Philosophy fo Education (teachers' college!).] I don't know if Ball State

has any distance courses or not, but I will mention the possibility to .

The first trip made in his car from his apartment was to a meeting

of the Philosophy Club. He has made a couple of new friends from this group

which is a small one - about 6-10 students. He has been in contact with his

professors. But one problem is that the head of the department, 's

advisor and the man who said is the best student he has ever had, just

retired and is apparently incommunicado. He has not responded to phone calls

or letters, so is somewhat upset at that since he had hoped to talk

over some of his ideas with Dr. Annis.

did show improvement after the four weeks in N Chicago. He started

college that September, living in the dorm. He did well for the first two

years and then the improvement began to gradually erode. He tried going off

his medication at times only to descend into severe depression each time.

Getting to classes became increasingly difficult for him until finally he had

to withdraw from school with only a few courses left until he could graduate.

If he had learned a way of looking at the OCD that would enable him to

deal with things as they came up, I do not think he would have spent nearly

two and a half years living in out bathroom! But over three years ago he

once more went off medication - for about a year this time. And he became so

severely depressed he ended up in the local hospital. The hospital

experience was so traumatic for him that he locked himself in our bathroom

and would not even open the door for months.

Unfortunately was fifteen before he was diagnosed - by us - and

eighteen when I took him to Chicago. The " boss it back " approach seem too

simplisitc to him. He has come to believe that the OCD is part of his

make-up and that he will never be truly free of it. Presently he seems to be

mostly trying to minimize the effect the OCD has on his daily life. He feels

he can do this on his own, so he has no therapist, just a psychiatrist who

prescribes for him.

So I recommend to all of you who have a diagnosis of OCD while your child

is still young - get them into CBT and E & RP as soon as possible. Help them

learn how to manage their OCD while they are still flexible enough to learn

the techniques that they need to have throughout life. Once they are of

legal age you will not have the control or influence you have while they are

still young and dependant.

I'm doing this for me! This morning I took a good look at my behind

and though you don't really notice a huge difference with clothes on

I definitely see a huge difference. There used to be dimples and

now there's definition and one dimple on one cheek and two dimples

on the other. I got so excited. But today I did have someone tell

me that out of the corner of his eye he thought I was my daughter.

That's a huge compliment, she's 18, I'm 43. I told him I would take

that as a compliment and he smiled. So I guess I'm getting there.

Keep goin', the compliments will eventually come, even if they are

not direct.

After all of my discouraging comments about not losing, etc., I

realize Aunt Flo is coming to visit *duh* and that's why I'm

discouraged, haven't lost recently. I definitely will not get on

the scales for a week. I seriously was an inch away from quitting,

now I'm okay. I even ate one of my son's poptarts. It was the only

sugary thing in the house. THANK YOU ALL! I'm back on track and

ready for a good week, even with Aunt Flo here.

We're all set to meet Dr D'Astous at Utah Shriner's on Wednesday!

I'm trying to prepare Siobhan to life in her cast, but everything

I've read points to her adjusting very quickly. (She adapted to the

brace really well.)

I'll post when we get back to keep everyone updated on how she's

doing.

Thanks! I finally found a way to post the photo's! (Even if I did

add one twice!!!! opps!).

Siobhan is sooooo tall, and growing every day! Ofcourse this actually

worries me when people say how tall she is (and it happens every day!)

All I can think of, is as she grows so her scoliosis progresses!

In that photo, the brace was holding her curve in the 20's. Now its

closer to 40, I'll have to add some more photo's......

I did persuade her to trim the neck, but thats as far as she let me

go!

I echo the sentiments. I've gone nomail a couple times because I

wasn't " interested " in hearing how well others were doing while I

found myself backsliding. Its been over a year and I feel like I have

not gained anything except more frustration. It may well be my

lifestyle, who nose. But I am not giving up. I do find the mapping

process quite frustrating. Maybe it IS how *I* approach this. Dunno.

Think nothing of missing my surgery. Even thou we waited on you a couple of

hours ; )

Really I don't know how you keep everyone staight. If your not one of the hard

core posters it's hard for me to follow.

I am sorry you have my headache- just know when your done with it I don't need

it back! So glad it has left me for now. I do still have a pressure and tight

feel at top of my ear. Is this normal for two weeks post op. How do people

wear their glasses?
