Dear Devanee,

I have had AIH when beeing pregnant with my second child, he was born in 2001.

At that time the recommendation here in Germany was to stay on a low dose of

prednisone and not to

take Imuran druing pregnancy.

I took 5 mg and had a mild flare up in week 25 or so. Increased the prednisone

and got gestational diabetes (the reason was the prednisone plus overweight).

Apart from that I got into remission during pregnancy with a final dose of 10 mg

prednisone. Another flare up came 1 year later beeing on 5 mg prednisone alone.

I was breast feeding and could not take Imuran for that reason.

Some have the opinion that the hormones during breast feeding trigger an

aggravation of autoimmune disease. I don't know.

Stopping both and waiting to become pregnant is probably too risky. The positive

effect of pregnany on autoimmune disease is not a sudden reaction but one that

develops with time (maybe parallel to hormone levels). You could run too easy

into a flare up. Lower or medium prednisolone doses are safe in pregnancy, at

least this is well known.

The other question: when reducing prednisone I always had pain in the joints for

quite some time and for some days I was feeling like a battery with no charge at

all.

Hope I could help you,

regards and all the best,
