Guest guest
** I believe Nash is not Autistic , but he has a mental disability, like schizophrenia. I believe, if we are talking about the same person. There was a movie made about his life? in IL *********Interestingly enough , a Psychology student told me her professor used the movie on his life (drawing a blank at the moment on the name) in their class to illustrate Asperger’s. Now personally I questioned this as being a good example. If one knew nothing about Asperger’s, I think the movie would give the impression that all Asperger’s folks are insane. I think the next time I see the women I will ask her to contact this Professor with my opinion. I would rather have them show ‘The Autism Maze’ by Vermont director Anne Barbano (do search autism maze Vermont). Anne has interviewed parents of kids on the spectrum and has done an excellent job with this film…………Gail

And Nash (as portrayed in the film) was very definitely schizophrenic, not ASD. If you watch the film you can see some similarities, which may explain why many with ASD (especially amongst the older generation, but I know a young man aged 24 this has happened to) have been misdx'd as schizophrenic. in England

Yes, I know a young man now 20 who was in his late teens before diagnosed with Asperger’s. Before that at one point he had the Schizoid Personality dx…..Gail
Guest guest
Nash did have Schizophrenia By the way the movie was called “A beautiful mind” and would not be a good example of AS since most people with autism don’t have visual and auditory hallucinations!! -Charlotte From: Autism and Aspergers Treatment [mailto:Autism and Aspergers Treatment ] On Behalf Of Gail Africa Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2006 9:15 AM Autism and Aspergers Treatment Subject: RE: Nash ** I believe Nash is not Autistic , but he has a mental disability, like schizophrenia. Guest guest
I have to jump in here, but this is just my personal experience. Many(according to a psychologist)people with asd can and do have comorbid conditions. Shizophrenia or what appears to be same can be indused in someone by medication use and prolonged stress. My son who has aspergers, developed hallucinations with medication for anxiety and attention. The psychologist thought he was developing shizophrenia. We stopped the medication, and the hallucinations stopped theresa RE: Nash Nash did have Schizophrenia By the way the movie was called “A beautiful mind” and would not be a good example of AS since most people with autism don’t have visual and auditory hallucinations!! -Charlotte From: Autism and Aspergers Treatment [mailto:Autism and Aspergers Treatment ] On Behalf Of Gail AfricaSent: Wednesday, January 11, 2006 9:15 AMAutism and Aspergers Treatment Subject: RE: Nash ** I believe Nash is not Autistic , but he has a mental disability, like schizophrenia. Guest guest
>I thought Nash was diagnosed with both. I doubt it since AS was not recognised outside of Austria until Lorna Wing discovered Asperger's work in about 1980. It was not incorporated into the DSM until 1994 I believe. And the way it was portrayed in the film, he had the hallucinations before he was given any medication, and they stopped whilst he took the tablets, returning when he gave up on them. Once he himself recognised they were illusions, then he was able to work at controlling them. in England
Guest guest
>I thought Nash was diagnosed with both. ********He might be, but using this movie as the college Professor I know of did, is a bad idea. His behavior in the movie is more that of a person with Schizophrenia than Asperger’s. Even if an Asperger person had co-morbid conditions, as my 13 year old does, such as OCD (delusional when it comes to poison) this movie would be a poor representation for college students to be learning about Asperger’s from, I think……..Gail !
