Guest guest
We've discussed the fact that many of us have other autoimmune diseases in addition to AIH. My new doctor's office has a handout from the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse on AIH. It's a good, basic, little piece, excellent for beginners and with some statistics I'd never run into before. I searched for the text on-line and found it at: <http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/autoimmunehep/> It states that " Type I (AIH) is the most common form in North America. . . .. About half of those with Type I have other autoimmune disorders, such as type 1 diabetes, proliferative glomerulonephritis, thyroiditis, Graves' disease, Sjogren's suyndrome, autoimmune anemia, and ulcerative colitis. " I hadn't read a statistic on this frequency. The text doesn't mention celiac disease, but remember that CD is the most common form of autoimmune disease, found in about 1% of the U.S. population. About half of those with CD have no digestive tract symptoms; they usually don't have reason to suspect they have the disorder, and their doctors often don't pick up on it.
