Zyrtec = cetirizine hydrochloide. In Canada it is called Reactin.

I think I first heard about it 2 years ago in this group.

I found it better than Claritin, and just as non-drowsy as Claritin.

I have

heard of people becoming dependent on Zyrtec. There is a small portion of

people who get sleepy from it. I knew someone who was taking it for

allergies then he stopped it and could not sleep. The only way he could

get any sleep was to take a Zyrtec… he eventually weaned himself

off it but was miserable for awhile. I don’t think this is common

at all, but I am certainly paranoid enough about weird side effects that I am

sticking to my Allegra.

I think if you take any antihistamine then stop it you might

start to itch. I take Allegra and stopped it for 3 days for additional

allergy testing and I itched horribly. It went away as soon as I went

back on the Allegra. The doc said it was basically a withdrawal reaction

to the antihistamine.

As for the difference between taking Zyrtec vs Zyrtec D, I would

think it would depend on whether or not you need/want the decongestant along

with the antihistamine. Try both and see which works better. Zyrtec

is supposed to be a non-drowsy antihistamine so if it makes you drowsy I wouldn’t

think adding the decongestant would change that. I do know someone else who

had Zyrtec make them drowsy and when they tried to stop taking it, they couldn’t

sleep. If they took a Zyrtec, they slept fine, if they didn’t take

it, they had horrible insomnia. He finally quit taking it and I think it

took several weeks to get back to normal. I think that is a pretty rare

side effect but it does happen!

evening as it makes me sleepy. I tried taking half of one, but it didn't do any

good. Haven't tried Zyrtec-D -- I assume it doesn't make you as drowsy as it

has pseudoephedrine i I'm taking the Clearease enzymes, but don't think they do

much. Also taking NAC -- again, not sure it does much. I'm wondering if

anyone's had any side effects from Zyrtec -- I think I read that if you stop

taking it you itch terribly.

I started taking Zyrtec, but I take it at night so I haven't noticed drowsiness.

Let us know if you get itchy--that would be a bummer to quit the Zyrtec after

allergy season only to itch like crazy.

I've taken Zyrtec for many years and take it every day. I also take it at night -I think it works better that way.

Ten years ago I quit taking decongestants because they caused urinary problems -the urge to go frequently (I was age 50). I was thinking I might be having prostate probs, but the doctor told me that decongestants could affect some folks that way. I'm guessing it just affects men that way, but don't know for sure.

I had been taking Zyrtec daily for over a year when I developed tinnitus in one

ear. I consulted Dr. son at Scripp's, and he suggested I cut my aspirin

intake down to three a day, rather than four. I did that but the tinnitus

continued so I did some research on side effects of the other two oral

medications I take, Singulair and Zyrtec.

I found this under side-effects for Zyrtec: " Hearing and Vestibular: deafness,

earache, ototoxicity, tinnitus. " I stopped taking it every day and sometimes

will take Claritin for a couple of days, and my tinnitus went away. Just

thought you should know about this side effect which is well hidden in the small

print
