Guest guest
Ruby- OMG. They didn't give you a scrip for anti-hypertension meds? Do you have a headache, nausea, shoulder or jaw pains? can you get to the er so they can take your blood pressure. I am worried because hypertension can progress to malignant hypertension [ readings over 170/100} and that could kill you from causing a heart attack or stroke. I know it sucks to be there on a holiday but I am really worried about your health! Nancie From: benzo4321 Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 11:46 AM hypothyroidism Subject: Re: hypotiredism If whoever needs an extra data point, here I am. I read online those misleading information about the Japanese eating lots of kelp/seaweed and some posts in another group that promote the benefits of iodine without citing any side effects. All I did was eating extra kelp. I didn't even take any iodine pills. I had numbness of hands, arms, legs; constipation; irregular heartbeats & chest pain (one night extremely slow heartbeat that woke me up). Now my hormone is out of whack. I became hypothyroid first from a healthy person, and then pre-diabetic. I was in emergency room on the weekend of Christmas due to chest pain resulting from hypertension. Last night my glucose was so out of control that I suffered from hypertension all night. I didn't even have any medication to control hypertension cause my blood pressure was normal before I started the kelp intake. I am now living on aspirin until I can see a doctor soon (it really sucks to be sick in the holiday season because many doctors are on vacation). I can't agree with Nancie more. Once thyroid is disturbed or destroyed, you can easily develop other metabolism disease such as diabetes and it will become a never ending nightmare. Ever since I started iodine, I haven't stopped suffering. Guest guest
thanks . Look Tish- , my mantra is if you want to take iodine supplements, fine but first you have to find out if you actually Need it and if you are Allergic to it and that means a trip to a medical provider's office for a test dose and where they have a crash cart available in case you find out that you are indeed allergic to it. Secondly, most credible providers who advise taking iodine, recommend only a few drops per day. My own Natural Medicine provider who takes armour herself and writes for armour; takes iodine 3 iodine drops per day because she is deficient not because Brownstein told her so. she thinks he is a quack because he recommends toxic doses of iodine to unsuspecting people. She also does not recommend taking iodine to all her patients, just the ones who Actually Need it! From: Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 7:41 AM hypothyroidism Subject: Re: hypotiredism " Read all you can by Brownstein " is a tip-off to anyone familiar with Brownstein or with the use of mega-doses of iodine in general. He/they recommend starting with 50,000 to 100,000 mcg/day of iodine. Some people might die from such a dose, as Nancie almost did. To me the " out of order " facet is the recommendation of someone whose procedures could result in harm, or in a very tiny number of cases in death. I suspect Nancie would not be comforted by the fact the number is small when she sees how easily she could have died from such advice. Besides, Nancie is a medical provider; and one who strongly considers alternative practices. For someone to recommend a quack site over her well considered advice [not to mention her personal experience] can't be personally rewarding. .. .. > > Posted by: " Trish " fielddot@... > <mailto:fielddot@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20hypotiredism> > trishruk <trishruk> > > > Thu Dec 31, 2009 3:26 am (PST) > > > > > > I am not sure WHERE in Alison's post that she told anybody to take > iodine?????? > ? Guest guest
Nancie, When I was in the ER during christmas weekend, I was given aspirin that immediately relieved all my symptoms including heart symptoms and numbness of entire lower body and arms. What I learned is that iodine induced hypothyroidism slowed my blood flow and created sticky or gel like flow that could not reach to my extremes. I had numbness of lower half and arms for 3 days until aspirin flushed the blood to my extremes. My hypertension has not yet reached crazy level otherwise I would have visited ER again last night. They did cause headache, chest pain and nausea. Today, I learned by experiments that small portion of food intake seems to control my blood pressure. In other words, the diabetic diet works. I am going to see doctors tomorrow. For those who do not believe the life threatening side of iodine, I hope my story teaches you some lessons. Happy New Year! Guest guest
That is why one must read, read, read. Most seaweed products are not tested for heavy metals and thus are very high in them. That is why it is better to take a pure supplement of iodine & iodide. It is curing me - iodoral. Ali On Jan 1, 2010, at 11:46 AM, benzo4321 wrote: > If whoever needs an extra data point, here I am. Guest guest
Ali, After all I have been through, I don't really disagree with the theory of moderate iodine supplementation. What I learned from my experience is that everything must be in moderation. Regarding your comment about heavy metals, the first few weeks i was eating the Japanese made seaweed, which should be relatively free of heavy metals. In the weeks that followed, I bought kelp from the Asian store. That could be loaded with heavy metals depending on where the source is. If you do a search on the Internet, you will find a lot of scientific papers documentating the opposite effect of iodine overdose. I presume people in those cases were taking the pure form of iodine (because those papers did not mention kelp intake). Therefore, I'd like to stress the point of everything in moderation. We don't have to argue here forever. We are all responsible for our own health. If whoever reads our messages does not want to go through what I have been through, they should know what to do with their health. Regards, Ruby > > > > > > > > > > Alison- > > > > > it is incredible to me that you don't get the gravity of you > > advice > > > > to tell > > > > > potentially uninformed people to take a substance like iodine or > > > > Iodoral, > > > > > which is iodine BTW; without knowing if that person is > > allergic to > > > > or not! > > > > > that is like giving a person a loaded gun and then tell them > > to play > > > > Russian > > > > > roulette at home. Guest guest
Well, at least you didn't recommend the iodine skin patch test, which the " iodine docs " [of which Brownstein is one] used to push. That one was so obviously bogus that even they have disavowed it. HOWEVER: The test you're recommending starts with taking 50 mg of iodine [50,000 mcg]. That much could kill someone who has the same sensitivity that Nancie has. That willingness to risk the life of some unsuspecting person to me is utterly inexcusable. In addition there is no credible research to support the idea that the results are even accurate. For example, IIRC iodine is also excreted in feces and sweat as well as urine. Further, there is no credible support for the idea that the amount not excreted in 24 hours has any connection to a person's actual need for the product. Here appears to be the beginning of their mission statement: " Hakala Research aims to provide total body health through Iodine.... " No one with a third grade education and an IQ over 13 is going to believe that " total body health " can be achieved by iodine or any other one product. In addition to the tests [which in about 95% of cases show you need iodine] they also just happen to sell that product. How convenient. And finally: They seem to place quite a bit of confidence in the posits of the iodine docs [at least Brownstein]. That alone makes it 100% certain that I will never be doing any business with them. If they are unable to determine the quack nature of the recommendations of the iodine docs or are willfully promoting something they know has no credible support the results are the same. .. .. > > Posted by: " Alison Trotta-Marshall " rubyrain11@... > <mailto:rubyrain11@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20hypotiredism> gypsy1jig > <gypsy1jig> > > > Fri Jan 1, 2010 10:41 pm (PST) > > > > Get tested: > > Hakalalabs.com > > I recommend the iodine saturation test and the bromide test. > > That's what I did. > > Ali > On Jan 1, 2010, at 1:44 PM, nancie barnett wrote: > > > thanks . > > Look Trish- , my mantra is if you want to take iodine supplements, > > fine but first you have to find out if you actually Need it and if > > you are Allergic to it and that means a trip to a medical provider's > > office for a test dose and where they have a crash cart available in > > case you find out that you are indeed allergic to it. Guest guest
From the viewpoint of Hakala Research [who sells iodine] that would probably have negative results. Almost any provider would more than likely tell the patient that the tests are less than definitive or bogus and that they do not indicate a need for the levels of iodine that they and Brownstein recommend. There goes your sales. As to why anyone not selling it would recommend something so dangerous [the test includes a test dose of 50 mg {50,000 mcg}] I suspect you have a pretty good idea. .. .. > Posted by: " nancie barnett " deifspirit@... > <mailto:deifspirit@...?Subject=%20Re%3A%20hypotiredism> > aspenfairy1 <aspenfairy1> > > > Fri Jan 1, 2010 11:47 pm (PST) > > > > then what? tell them to take a test dose at home where they could die if > they have a fatal anaphylactic reaction? why not advocate that they get > tested in a provider's office and take the trial dose in a provider's > office? > > ------------ > -------------------------------------- > From: " Alison Trotta-Marshall " <rubyrain11@... > <mailto:rubyrain11%40sbcglobal.net>> > Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 10:40 PM > <hypothyroidism > <mailto:hypothyroidism%40>> > Subject: Re: Re: hypotiredism > > > Get tested: > > > > Hakalalabs.com > > > > I recommend the iodine saturation test and the bromide test. > > > > That's what I did. > > > > Ali

I was pleased to read Dr. Mercola's latest article on the thyroid. He doesn't make mention of iodine supplementation except to recommend natural sources if need be. It was a complete turnaround from the previous thyroid article that Mercola wrote which noted Dr. Brownstein as a good source to refer to. That had me completely baffled because I respect Dr. Mercola and did not understand why he would suggest that Dr. Brownstein's book be a good reference. In the recent article Dr. Mercola did not even mention magnescent iodine which was mentioned in his previous article. Mercola did make mention of Armour and it's availability.
