- I have pain and numbness in my left foot since my 2nd revision, and yes I've been told it's a direct cause of the lumbar surgery. I believe that unless it's a major concern, most orthopedists are going to be more than happy to skim over the issue.

Hi ,

I have a lot of numbness in my left foot. My doctors aren't sure if

it

is caused by something to do with my flatback or if it is caused by

my

other diagnosis (syringomyelia). It started with just one toe (the

one

next to the pinky toe) and has spread to others and then to back of

leg

and butt, etc. More recently it is beginning in my right foot. It's

a

real creepy feeling - I hate for my feet to get touched, makes me

want

to jump out of my skin. When it first started happening, I described

it as " when I'm touched in one place on my leg or foot, I sort of

feel

it in a totally different place. " Nerves are so weird.....

When my mom recently got diagnosed with diabetes and complained about

her foot, I asked my doc to do a diabetes test on me, but I don't

have

the results yet. If I ever get my flatback fixed, I'll let the board

know if any of my numbness resolves.

- I have numbness in my right foot and leg, up to the knee on the right side of the leg. The foot is numb, but yet if rubbed or touched causes lots of pain. I can't keep shoes on without straps. The foot has the pins and needles feelings at all times. The dr assures me from the x-rays that none of the hardware is pressing on a nerve. But, after I had the revision surgery, the foot was bad. It feels like a vice around it all the time. I think some of the nerves were damaged permanently in surgery. It has been 2 years since the surgery, so I don't think it is going to get better. I am having some of the hardware removed next month, so I am praying it will help the foot to be better. Kathy Howe <N.HOWE@...> wrote:

,

I believe it is fairly common for those with flatback to experience

nerve compression in the lumbar spine for a variety of reasons. It can

cause pain. I know foot numbness and tingling were some of my first

indications that the old spine wasn't holding up.

This link might help:

I would definitly discuss is with my doctors if I was you!

Kathy, I have the same problem, only in my left foot and leg. It

started shortly after my revision surgery and after the hardware was

removed my surgeon told me that two of the screws had been pressing

on a nerve. I had the hardware out in November and so far have not

seen any improvement, actually the pins and needles got so bad I

called the nurse in tears wondering what to do. I am now taking

Neurontin and that seems to help, if I don't do to much. My surgeon

so far hasn't given me much hope in recovering. The phrase he used

was, 'Your nerve is bruised and could possibly heal'. I didn't take

to much away from that conversation.

Hi Everyone:

I am doing this post to add some info about me lol. I have scoliosis 60

degree thoracic and 40 lumbar, I have never had surgery as none of

these ortho drs here in the toronto area feel that I have a problem

lol. The last one I saw last Nov told me I had a drug problem but hey

maybe O wouldn't if these idiots would try and fix me up. I do have

type 2 diabetes but I feel it is too soon to have neuropathies from

that - the foot issue is numbness - it sort of feels like I have

strings wrapped around my toes and all of my nails on the left foot are

growing weird too. I know this is a flatback forum but some of the

symptoms and advice is so useful I read the digests all the time.

Thank you all for answering me and giving me some support it is greatly

appreciated.

Dear ,

I'm not a doc, and indeed Flat back and complications of Revision surgery can give your foot numbness and pain, but so can Diabetes, my Mom has neuropathy in her feet and got it very quickly after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I think that by the time most diabetics get diagnosed they've had it for years, and in my Mom's case it was wildly out of control, spent a week in the hospital trying to get it under control, sent her home, and she had a stoke. So from the time she found out she was diabetic, a week later, here she was dealing with a stoke, while hers was fairly minor, she still has some problems from that. Her biggest problem is the neuropathy, she doesn't sleep because of the foot pain, and the numbness drives her nuts, she says that she always has to wear socks, or else her feet drive her nuts. She can't stand the bedding touching them. Her doc gives her Neurontin and Valium to deal with it and neither seems very effective. I wish I lived closer to her, and that we could get her here to Denver to get her seen by a more comprehensive set of docs than she gets in Boise. I just feel so bad for her, it just seems so never ending. While she is very careful to keep her blood sugar level good, she thinks the neuropathy is damage from when hers was out of control. I think in your case since you may have multiple reason why your feet are numb, you need to weed out just whats causing it, the Flat Back or Diabetic Neuropathy. Just letting you know my Mom's plight to let you know that indeed Neuropathy can strike fairly quickly in type 2 diabetics.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with foot numbness? I

cheated last week with some rice noodles, and also had alot of extra

salt. Within the next few days, one foot went numb. I thought it

could be a blood sugar spike since my body isnt used to any simple

sugars. Shortly after the other foot has gone numb, and both feel very

cold both in sensation and to the touch. My doctor simply wants me

to " watch it " for any more changes. I am experiencing some other

candida symptoms like cravings and dizziness and emotional swings and

some stiffness on joints. Is foot numbness anything anyone has

experienced?
