Glass jars in the freezer

I made some bone broth last week and put the excess in the freezer in glass

jars. Never one to proceed cautiously, I guess, I ended up with 4 broken

wide-mouth Ball jars. The one jar from Tropical Traditions coconut oil withstood

the expansion of the broth. It was the straightest jar of the bunch (not much

curve at the neck). (It was interesting to see that the expansion seemed to

occur over several days' time.)

Do I need to purchase jars specifically for freezer use in order to be able to

freeze the bone broth?

,

I had jars bust on the first batch of stock I tried to freeze in glass too.

but it was a big batch, maybe 8 or 9 quarts had to be thrown out :-(. I

actually mostly freeze in quart size plastic containers now, just for my

peace of mind. but now that I think of it, my husband recently put some

stock away for me in jars and they are fine. The trick is not to fill them

too full. Leave a good couple inches with no stock at the top, to give them

room to expand and you shouldn't have any problems. You don't need to buy

special freezer safe jars.
