She is in an early intervention program now to help her improve. I thought she would never crawl, but am excited to see her finally " get around " . Congrats to you too! Really Savannah has improved on her own and a lot of time the OT just sits there and observes. She has improved a lot in a short period of time and I honestly think it has been just by being able to see other kids walking and crawling, etc. She has an older sister (almost 3) which helps and goes to daycare. -----Original Message----- From: B. He no longer rolls over in either direction (he would go from stomach to back when he was younger) and he is not even close to crawling (no interest in pulling up or walking with help either). I have talked to his pediatrician several times and since my son sits up so well - which is suppose to be a more difficult skill than rolling over - the Doctor is not concerned. What issues were you concerned about with ? Did your ped refer you to PT? Are you involved in an Early Intervention program? Was a preemie? Sorry for all the questions - I have been very concerned about this and since the Doctor repeatedly tells me there is no problem I have been debating whether to accept that or to go with my gut and pursue options. It's free. He was automatically signed up due to his prematurity (26 weeks). They have someone come out and do an assessment and talk with you about your concerns. We qualified for Occupational, Physical and Speech therapies. He was "graded" at about 6 months for OT and ST and 8-9 months for PT. He was about 9-10 months adjusted at the time. We see each separately for one hour a week in addition to our EI coordinator who kind of over sees his overall development with heavier attention to cognitive skills. I would contact your State agency for a full assessment in all areas. Here it is under the Dept. Of Economic Security in the Division of Developmental Disabilities. Like someone else said, it is free so it doesn't hurt if you have concerns. For example, at the time we were signed up (Feb) I wasn't worried about speech skills but by the time we were assessed (April) I'm glad I signed up for that as well because it turns out he has a sensitive gag reflex so he hasn't been able to progress past stage 1 or 2 foods. I would call EI for an evaluation. It can't hurt. If he needs help, they will provide it, if he doesn't, well, you have piece of mind. You don't need a referral to get an EI eval. Keep us posted! I sought out PT mainly because she was showing no interest in crawling and I wanted her evaluated. I was referred for PT at my request because has an occasional slight tilt. She has never been diagnosed with torticollis but I guess has a mild case. I haven't checked into the EI program but sounds like it may be a good idea for you. Hope this helps. Guest guest Posted May 22, 2001 Report Share Posted May 22, 2001 Way to go ! Now the fun begins. I just wanted to share that my 1st daughter never crawled, started walking at 1 year. Olivia, who is 8 months old, shows no signs of crawling either and has a lot of difficulty rolling over. Her PT (for her tort) says he sees a lot of this since babies are on their backs so much due to the SIDS campaign. There seems to be certain neck muscles that never get strengthened enough for crawling. Just another opinion that I wanted to throw in! She is a big girl and just waited until she was ready. She is 11 months now and is still not really pulling her self up to standing, but I am sure she will get there. Try not to worry to much. Now she is running with the best of them. Don't worry too much if the helmet seems appropriate during all other times. Use the hour off to encourage the crawling if you want.
