Guest guest
It depends on your doctor. A second opinion about the diagnosis is not needed because blood is blood. However, you should get a copy of the blood tests done. See if your family doctor did more than just a TSH. Ask him/her if they know anything about subclinical hypothryoidism or if they ever use anything other than synthroid or another synethic T4 drug. Some GP's are great, some endocrin's are great. Some GP's are not good for thyroid and some endocrin's aren't great for thyroid. Another option is to find an osteopathic doctor, they have D.O instead of M.D. after their name. Again some are like conventional doctors but some are great. I would look for a doctor that does Basal body temperature as part of a diagnosis, TSH test, and Free T3 and Free T4. Also look for someone who is open to natural thyroid if needed. Mostly, find a doctor who you are comfortable with and listens to you. If you aren't getting what you want from your doctor, shop around. For the second part, they usually like to start out slow because they don't want to make you sick by too much thyroid. Often it gets bumped up at the six week mark depending on your blood work and your symptoms. Guest guest
Was the pt on parenteral thiamine post-op? or currently taking thiamine?? -----Original Message-----From: [mailto: ]On Behalf Of RunkleSent: Saturday, May 28, 2005 11:42 AM Subject: 2 questions... Hi! I have 2 questions for the group… 1. What would cause an elevated thiamin level? I have patient who is 6 months post op, and her labs came back with a thiamin level of 134.1. The normal range per the lab where she had it drawn is 25-75. The rest of her labs are WNL. Any thoughts? 2. My surgeon wants to starting giving everyone zinc. Does anyone know of any references to support this? I haven’t seen zinc deficiency to be big a problem in our group, but certainly I’m willing to add it if there is evidence to support it. If your practice supports this, what dosage are you using? Thanks so much for your input. Have a great holiday weekend! Runkle, MA, RD, LDN Building on Basics Nutrition Consulting Services, Inc. Guest guest
Well, I've been doing better these past few days and I seem to be back in the swing of things. I was pondering a couple things in regards to the diet. 1. I've read that taking water mixed with up to 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper before meals can help digestion. Has anyone tried this? 2. Is there a point in our healing progress that our digestion is good enough to handle raw veggies again. I was thinking that the digestion part most likely wouldn't take as long as it would to heal completely, and that maybe adding some raw veggies would be beneficial. Is it just a matter of trial and error? Thanks again to those who gave me the kick I needed to get back on track! I really do appreciate it. Guest guest
I have used HMR (health management resources) with great success. i used to work with program and it has become a program that i belive in. The pt does 3 shakes and 2 entrees per day (800 calories) or add 5 fruits/vegetables l to total about 1200 calories per day. They deliver to the pts home or if there is a program in your area they can order and pick it up. Here is the website http://www.hmrprogram.com/ Regarding lap band education, I think one of the most important items to cover is not eating and drinking at the same time and avoiding high fat foods.
