Our program discourages all snacks- including popcorn.

The extra calories add up quickly- and we've noticed a significant

decrease in post-op wt loss- or even weight gain.

When patients bring up snacks (and popcorn is my #1 question)- I ask

them if they are actually hungry- or if they have the nibbles- and 99%

of the time it's just nibbles- so we plan alternatives to eating.

Just my thoughts.

Have a great night.

What do you guys recommend in regards to popcorn after gastric bypass

surgery. Obviously I wouldn't recommend it as a meal but what about as

a snack? When do you feel it is appropriate if at all for a pt to eat

popcorn, around 3 months out? Obviously I would recommend light,

reduced fat, air popped popcorn. I have many patients ask me about

this. Thanks for your help.

we have a nurse here who is s/p 1 year and eats it as a snack occasionally. She

states she can only eat 1 cup. At least it has more fiber than chips!!

We also discourage popcorn. We've had 2 patients (both < 1 year post-op) admitted to our ER with severe pain after eating popcorn.

The hulls do not break down and can cause obstruction.

Fleet farm sells a stainless steel whirly pop; can't remember for how much, but

for less than found on the web.

I thought coconut oil was the best oil for popcorn!

It was discontinued for a while in the US in movie theaters because it was a

" saturated fat " but whatever they used to replace it gummed up the popcorn

poppers so bad that they had to return to coconut oil.

My husband loves popcorn popped in coconut oil. I live in the midwest and

Koepsells popcorn (famous in this area) even markets coconut oil for popping

corn.

i think that every once and a while a bit of popcorn at a movie is

not so bad (no butter). but the problem is the amount. i have been

known to get a small one and only ask for half!!! even then i have to

throw most of it away. maybe we can lobby for bandster popcorn

portions at movies?????

I can always get popcorn down too. I actually started eating the light

with butter spray sometimes. That movie theatre stuff IS the devil

it's so damn good. I think they sprinkle it with MSG or something.

Well, what kind of fish? Many of the softer and moister fishes are

great. I love halibut, but can't eat it unless it is way overcooked

or has a lot of sauce on it.

Maybe next time you can take a shopping bag with you and carry in your

own air popped or microwave popcorn. That movie popcorn is so full of

grease, that maybe it just slid on through? Maybe you concentrated on

chewing carefully?

Of course a lot of this doesn't make sense and never will. Next time

the same fish might be fine and the popcorn not. I can eat a bit of

popcorn, but for me the little husks seem to irritate my stomach, so i

rarely do so. Or something does, and maybe it is other than the

little sharp husks.

And then there's the question of why you tested the waters in the

first place?

whether it has msg or not, it has a ton of other salt. if i eat it my

hands swell up, same as happens with cheap chinese food (as opposed to

where they cook it for me and leave out the msg at my request). These

days some chinese restaurants actually advertise that they use no msg.

of course the grease they dump on it....but fortunately for me i've

never liked greasy things or butter at all.

popcorn is pretty much empty calories. in general you could spend

your calories on better choices. also many find that the kernels

upset or irritate the stomach. but many don't.

as to the eating more than one at a time....well, for me, that goes

back to the old " cram a bunch in my mouth as fast as I can " instead of

" take small bites and chew well " .

and if the popcorn is cooked in grease/oil and then drowned in fake

butter at the movies (or real butter at home)....

but to each his/her own.

Just plain old air popped popcorn with garlic powder to " spice " it

up. Better munching on that then potato chips.....and somehow

munching on green beans or tuna for a snack just doesn't cut it - ha

ha ha !

Dan,

Since I lost weight I don't swell up like I used to. I don't like

grease either but, I love butter. Except right now, I'm pregnant, and

can't eat butter or butter substitute. It just grosses me out. I wish

I had that problem normally.

Carol, Movie popcorn is mostly air and is greasy, so slides right

thru. Most junk food does, so is easy to eat -and easy to sabotage

our loss. Be aware that those big tubs of popcorn are way more thana

whold day's calories just by themselves. WE'd spend the entire next

week cutting back to make up for it- and then we would not be able to

meet the protein, fiber, or other needs.

Still, a SMALL bag at the movies occasionally is ok - as most things

occasionally are ok. But your loss will be up to you!

AIR-popped popcorn from an air-ppper uses no oil, so is a good snack -

full of fiber. 3 cups is less than 100 calories! I'm a movei fan,

and go every week. i always smuggle in a bag of air-popped popcorn,

and take a no-cal bottle of something too. Until they offfer decent

choices and non-carbonated fluids, that is my solution.

Fish shouldn't get stuck. TRy the soft white fish like talapia -

delicious! Makesure it's soft and moist, and use a nice sauce if you

like. Denser fish like salmon and halibut steaks must be eaten

carefully - with the usual pea-sized bites and thorough chewing. It's

not much differentin density than meat.

The stoma is about pea-sized, so things JUST CANNOT get stuck if we

start with a pea-size bite AND then chew at least 15x. It just can't!

Our dog (female six year old obese pomeranian) is the lickingest dog

I've ever known. She would lick all of you whether you had butter on

you or not.

Of course you know why dogs lick their <privates> don't you?

Because they can.

How do you suggest those in cooler climates do that in the winter? I am a

member of a local food co-op, which is wonderful over the summer, but not

much is available over the cooler months.
