Guest guest
Hi... Since surgery usually involves fusion of a significant number of vertebrae, waiting until skeletal maturity would allow your son to continue growing in that area of his torso. Fusion, if done correctly, would halt growth. Also, if children who are not done growing are fused, they need to be fused either from the front/anterior (which is more difficult than a back (posterior) approach, or the front and back (anterior/posterior), as fusion strictly from the back can cause a condition called crankshaft phenomenon. Hope that isn't too confusing. Regards,
Guest guest
Terri... Hopefully, the surgeon will at least try a brace. You'll know quickly if the brace will hold the curves while he matures. If not, than surgery will probably be the only option. Good luck. Please keep us posted. Guest guest
Hi Terri, I'm in the middle of dinner prep, but I have to check my e-mail every once in a while anyway, so if I don't get all of this answered, I will get back to it and answer the rest. OK. My daughter is 16, will be 17 on the 29th of this month. At the moment she is in a Providence (night-time wear only) brace, but that may be weaned tomorrow. I said day after tomorrow we went to Shriners, but my brain was in a temporary(?!) glitch, it's tomorrow. So far her curves have remained stable since she started bracing. Oops!! Gotta run. I will continue more later on. Blessings!!
