Guest guest
Patients should strive to get 80-100 grams of protein daily. The reason being is that the body no longer completely absorbs protein post-operatively. Therefore, patients need to go above and beyond normal every day needs in order to get enough protein to maintain lean body mass. The general rule of thumb is 1.5 grams protein/kg IBW. Ideal body weight for a medium-frame individual is 119 pounds at 5 " and 3 pounds for each additional inch over 5 " . I'm drawing a blank on the numbers for men. They're at the office and will provide them if needed. A 5'5 " woman should get getting 95 grams of protein per day. Hope that helps. Kate Alie, M.S., R.D., L.D. Guest guest
I can tell you I'm a patient about 4 months post op. I was told 50g PRO/day. My IBW is about 125... I think each MD has their own standards for a success rate. K.
Guest guest
I use 1.3 gm protein/kg IBW I agree that all these recommendations are facility preference. , If you were my patient, I would advise you to be consuming 70-75 gm protein daily. I use 50 as the universal target when pt are first discharged but encourage them to maintain at 1.3 gm/kg per day for the first year post op. What are your thoughts as a pt/RD on this? Guest guest
I was wondering can my being so itchy be that I might be having too much protein in my diet? I eat sausage sometimes for breakfast. I have chicken almost every day and steak a couple of times a week. I was remembering that years ago I went on the Atkin's diet and ate mostly meat and broke out in hives all over my body with it. Can too much protein cause problems? Thanks Theresa
Guest guest
Hi Theresa, First of all, protein is NOT making you itch. Secondly, have you calculated your ratios on fitday.com so you know you're within your daily dietary protein requirements? A few years ago when I was healing on this diet I had a lot of itching too. Eventually it subsided. Our bodies heal in the ways that they need to. Although many of us have similar symptoms, no one person's path of healing is exactly like anothers. If you're following the program faithfully, taking all the recommended supplements and not cheating, you are doing fine. hang in there. jackie > > I was wondering can my being so itchy be that I might be having too much protein in my diet? > > I eat sausage sometimes for breakfast.
