To everyone

I placed a picture of my son in the files directory under . He is

wearing the Star Band. The picture of by himself is the first helmet.

It pushed down on his left eye and it caused his left ear to be pushed

forward. He got this starband on March 7th 2001. I was concerned from the

beginning. I kept tell the orthotist that it was warped. He tried to

adjust it for a couple of weeks and it did not improve. I told him I wanted

a new helmet. He called someone a orthoamerica and the did a level test.

They said it could have been shipped while it was still warm (which concerns

me about orthoamerica). I am placing these pictures just so anyone who is

considering a Starband to be aware of what could happen. We got a second

starband on April 6, 2001. I am still a little leery of this one, but it

fits much better. And the back of his head is rounding out nicely. He was

off by 18mm and has improved by 5 mm in a month. I am keeping a close eye on

it. Any more problems though and we will be commuting to Dallas, for the

DOC band. The picture with the Easter bunny is his second helmet.

The email I posted also went out to the local new here in Tulsa, I have

heard back from 2 of the 3 stations. They are going to run a story on this.

Hopefully I will have helped new mothers to be aware. Since the peds don't

think it is necessary.

Hi Debbie,

was 8 wks when we noticed the flat spot. He just turned 5 months when

we got the Starband. I repositioned him for 3 and 1/2 months and no change.

It did not get worse, but it did not get better. The neurosurgeon, wanted

him in a helmet, not so much for the flat spot, but because his ears were so

off. I don't think that an infant any younger that 5 months could get a

starband, because of the weight. He just started to hold his head up good

when he got the band. And you can tell he still struggles to keep his head

up. Yes, the two girls in the picture are his sisters. They are my two

little helpers.

Hi Cherie:

You are obviously a very alert mom, as you noticed this problem

promtly and have hopefully resolved the problem. I'm sure you will

keep a close eye on it from here on out. I wish I would've been as

alert as you & stopped my daughter's treatment in her STARband or

demanded a new one much sooner than I did. I am happy to report that

we have since rec'd the DOC band & are seeing wonderful success, in

just 8 wks thus far! The ear smoosh on 's 1st band was

terrible, and the eye was as well. The 2nd band looks much much

better. I hope it works for you and cutie - he looks young,

you are lucky to be starting at a younger age! Wishing you nothing

but the best success for your son. Are the other 2 with the easter

bunny his sisters?

Hi Stasia,

It is good to hear someone say good things about the Starband. We saw great

improvement in the back of s head in just two weeks and even more in 4

wks. I think the success of the Starband will be determined from the

orthotists. We are lucky to have a very concerned orthotist and a

neurosurgeon. Our orthotist could not fix it with minor changes so he

called the company. He is at Orthoamerica this week for some more training.

I am sure there is a lot of quacks out there trying to jump on the helmet

band wagon and I just want new parents to be aware. I think that is why the

Doc Band has been so successful, because from what I hear they are very well

trained and experienced. But so is my orthotist and he would not do

anything to hurt , just for the money. Aitan's Starband was obviously

not right and the orthotist was an idiot for trying to make it fit and put

that family through all that.

The decorations were put on by orthoamerica, they have several designs.

Your ortho should know this go to www.orthomerica.com click on the baby with

the starband and then click on transfers. They got some real cute ones. We

got the Martians.

Anyone who wants to use that email can. I didn't know I was such a good

writer. I took some of it from documents I had on the bands.

Thanks for the encouraging words.

Hello Cherie

My son was 4 mo when he was casted for his STARband. He

had just turned 5 mo when we got it. He hasn't had any problems with

the weight of it and thankfully his fits very well. I was concerned

about the smooshing of his eyes when he moved his head to look up so

they cut more off of the back so he could move his head more freely.

I am feeling very lucky that we haven't had a problem since I have

been seeing a lot of people having problems with STARband. He has

been in the band for two weeks now and although I don't really see

any improvements yet, I don't see anything getting worse.

I love the pictures of and the decorations on his helmet. How

did you do that? The tech at Lawall told me not to paint

's helmet and for me to just use stickers. I love the

look of that helmet.

Also, would you mind if I copied your letter to the news and

submitted it to our local news here in Pennsylvania? It was very

well written and I would like as many people to hear about this so

they can either avoid the problem or correct it before it is too late.

Thanks!

Angie,

You should not feel bad. No doubt we have had a couple of really

horrible STARband situations as of late, but remember that there

are probably thousands of SUCCESSFUL STARband stories out

there as well. The horrible ones are the ones we hear more

about because the sitautions are so very unfortunate. The happy

people we don't hear as much from because everything is going

along smoothly for them. You should never hesitate to post your

great results and recommend your STARband ortho. The

STARband has been an excellent product and a Godsend to so

many people who simply could not afford the DOCband or the

travel involved to get a DOCband.

Angie,

I understand how you would be concerned but I there are " success "

stories out there for the STARband. We had great results with our

STARband. had severe flattening, was banded at 5 months and

was done in 2.5 months. Just hang in there and try not to worry.

This is such an emotional issue for all of us parents who just want

the best for our lil ones.

I also live in So. Florida. Just curious to know what part of Fl you are in- I only knew of the DOC band being an option in the Kendall area, just south of Miami where we went. My son wore his band from July-September, very hot months here, and we kept him indoors as much as possible, lightly dressed and as cool as we could keep him just to maintain his comfort level- looked for parking garages and cooled the car before going in if possible. Good luck!

Meg:

MY daughter is also 9 months. She is in STARband for two months now.

I can already tell the difference. About your questions:

1. Rembember the more the better. Keep the helmet on during the

night and nap time. If she is up playing, it's ok to take the helmet

off for a hour or two.

2. The hair still grows.

3. She will sweat a lot at begining. Take off the helmet and wipe

her head more often. Her body will adjust to the heat.

Good luck with the helmet and welcome to the group
