Guest guest
Hi Nell, I highly recommend that you contact your local La Leche League (in addition to recieving Bee's advice). http://www.llli.org/WebUS.html they can help insure that your baby doesnt become nipple confused as well as help you to heal your nipples. LLL has all the answers to dealing with thrush. Their services are free and they love to help breastfeeding mothers. -Sara
Guest guest
What worked for me was lots of probiotics for the baby (natren Lifestart, bifidus only), and me. Along with sunning the nipples for 10 minutes everyday. There was one point I tried the gentian violet solution too. Oh and make sure to use a new towel every bath, change bras/breast pads frequently, and was anything that comes in contact with the thrush in hot water. > > Bee, > > I'm pretty certain that I have a yeast infection on my nipples. Guest guest
Sara, Thank you mucho. I've emailed a few of the ladies in my area for help with the nipple confusion and the yeast. I did find a really helpful article here http://breastfeeding.hypermart.net/thrush.html with lots of ideas. I know I need to get more aggressive with my candida diet to really nip it in the bud but I'm hoping something can be applied topically to relieve the nipple pain right now ... and take care of the infection in him. Since this is systemic I wonder if it's in my breast milk and I'm continuing to infect my baby with the yeast that way too? Guest guest
, Thanks for the reply. I'll look into that probiotic you mentioned. Guest guest
Nell, Good Luck! With my first born, it took 3 months to get rid of the thrush (or so I thought!). with my second, it took closer to 5 months for the symptoms to go away. That was before I knew about candida and that it was in me (and them)- not just on my nipples/their tongues. For a topical solution, I mixed a tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of distilled water and used cotton balls to bathe the nipple after each feeding- that seemed to help a lot. I drank tons of grapefruit seed extract and that eliminated all my symptoms but didnt help them (I also did a very dilute solution for their mouth). mom.com has a lot of tips too for something to help in the meantime. http://www.kellymom.com/store/freehandouts/newman/C-CandidaProtocol.pdf Good luck! Thrush is so traumatic- my heart goes out to you! At least you know about the diet- that should help it go away much much faster! -Sara Oh- and as to the gentian violet: it has been shown to be carcinogenic in rats. I would try everything else first.

Even though the La Leche League is very helpful to breastfeeding Mothers, they do not understand candida in babies, and even state that candida is contagious, which is not true. So I wouldn't recommend them for candida issues. Bee

Welcome to our group. To understand candida and how to treat it please read the articles emailed to you when you joined this group. If you didn't keep them read How to Successfully Overcome Candida, Curing Candida, How to Get Started, and Candida Treatments for Babies & Children, which are all in this section on my website: http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/candida/index.php Also, like I wrote to Sara, please do not rely on the La Leche League to help you with candida, since they don't understand that candida is not contagious, and the only cay to cure it is by building up the immune system. Direct treatments can help alleviate the discomforts from candida, but they won't cure it until your immune system is built up. However, often mothers think they have candida in their breasts, but instead it is candida and other toxins coming out through their breast. So please read the articles and then get back to us with questions and concerns. The best in health, Bee

Like I wrote before candida is not cured by killing it off; it is only cured by building up the immune system with " proper nutrients, " by eliminating foods and toxins that feed candida, and by eliminiating toxins in general. +++Most websites believe you can kill off candida, which isn't true, and that candida is contagious, which also isn't true - please read the articles I referred you to this morning instead. To help the pain in your breast apply wet heat and/or soak in a hot Epsom salt bath. Also apply unrefined coconut oil to your breasts frequently (it will also help your baby). Probiotics won't help you or your baby at this point; that's way it is the last step of the program. Also gentian violet is very damaging. Guest guest
*** I wonder if rubbing your nipples with coconut oil would help? It's anti-fungal and soothing. I wouldn't recommend the probiotics. Try the coconut oil first. Probiotics are the last stage in Bee's program. Guest guest
Hi Nell, I get the digest and don't often read it these days, but I just wanted to jump in on this one... I have never had the excruciating pain that some women get with thrush in their breasts. However, my first daughter had persistent thrush in her mouth, so I know how frustrating it is to try and work on this issue when you are tired and exhausted and just wish you could nurse your new baby and feel better! I also wholeheartedly recommend La Leche League for advice to help with pumping and nipple confusion, and helping to get that baby back on your breast as soon as possible, and for tips on how to help baby not develop a strong preference for the bottle. Have you thought of nipple shields? I've never used them, but perhaps they could give you enough relief so that you can continue feeding at the breast and then wean yourself off of them as your candida improves? I know Bee does not recommend probiotics or antifungals at this point, but (with all due respect to Bee) my opinion is that if you could get some topical relief from trying probiotics, apple cider vinegar, or some pau d'arco tincture on your breasts and nipples themselves, (if the coconut oil isn't doing the trick) it would be worth it to make sure you're not going to compromise your breastfeeding relationship. I DO agree that none of those would lead to long-term health and balance, and that Bee's diet is indeed great for curing the cause of Candida, both in yourself and for your baby...so doing the diet would still be the most important. Also, one word of caution when starting the diet ... I would not go " cold turkey " but instead ease into it as Bee recommends... I know that's probably not your first instinct if you are in pain and want to be able to breastfeed your baby normally again as soon as possible... I have known a couple women though whose milk supply really went down fast when they started a diet similar to Bee's " cold turkey " ... you need to make sure you're replacing carb calories that you used to eat with all the good fats and protein, and give your body at least a few weeks to transition. So much to think about, but it would be so yucky to find that the pain is gone, but that you don't have much breastmilk left either! good luck,

When I was nursing my daughter we both had thrush and when I started tandem nursing, my other child developed it as well. If this is true, how is thrush not contagious? +++Hi Sara. Under certain conditions candida changes from a friendly bacteria into an overgrowing monster within each person's body independent of anyone or anything else. +++Babies acquire their parent's " nutritional status " upon conception (both Mom & Dad), so if either parent has a depressed immune system and/or candida, the baby is born with a depressed immune system/candida. +++You can no more " catch " candida from someone else than you can " catch " their broken finger. +++Please read this article to understand more thoroughly how babies acquire candida upon conception: http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/baby.php Bee
Guest guest
Hi Bee, I understand how babies get candida at conception. What I was curious about was how my 3.5 year old got it when he started nursing (his sister and I had a nasty thrush issue). He didnt have any symptoms before so it seemed that he " caught " it from us. Also he weaned during that time and the thrush went away very quickly. Just curious- -Sara From: Bee <beeisbuzzing2003@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Breastfeeding and Yeast Date: Monday, January 12, 2009, 1:11 AM > > thats interesting. Thrush in the mouth isn't the only candida symptom. Diaper rash, rashes and eruptions on the skin, cradle cap and many others are also caused by candida. I usually write friendly organism instead. My bad! Bee
