There is no scientific proof that melatonin helps cause sleep, so you

might drop that now,

I doubt it is selenium - although have you checked the pills to see what

they are using as a " filler " ? I bought zinc pills and was horribly

swollen and sick from them, when I bought a different make of zinc pill,

I was fine. The first had corn starch as a filler!!

I would check that out first, or try a different brand of each of them.

Keen

melatonin and selenium

I recently added these two supplements. The selenium, because it is

said to help the synthroid work better, and the melatonin to help me

sleep. One of these or maybe both is messing with my head. It is

causing lots of mental confusion and my depression has increased ten

fold.

Any ideas which of those might be the cause?

Melatonin produces vivid nightmares and the jitters in some people. I

think it might be a indicator that you don't need it.

The best way to sleep better is by inceasing b-vitamin and magnesium

intake and by detoxifying; any stressor including malnutriton and

toxin load can affect sleep patterns.

The selenium is good; it will help reduce toxin load by virtue of

incorporating into beneficial glutathione. It thus reduces arsenic,

mercury and other heavy metal exposure too, all are toxins. Selenium

is not known to affect sleep patterns as far as I know, barring

toxicity, but you should know what selenium and arsenic your drinking

water contains before you supplement.

If melatonin is going to work for you, effect will be fairly

pronounced and it will work in minutes, particularly if you take a

sublingual.

Contrary to Mr. smkahoo's analysis, reliable data exits to support

the effectiveness of melatonin. For those who appreciate research,

here's some of it, from the 1637 hits obtained in a PubMed searh on

(melatonin sleep)

Update on the pharmacology of REM sleep behavior disorder.

PMID: 16966533

In the related articles, see:

Melatonin for treatment of REM sleep behavior disorder in neurologic

disorders: results in 14 patients.

PMID: 14592300

QUOTE: " The effective melatonin doses were 3 mg in two cases, 6 mg in

seven cases, 9 mg in one case, and 12 mg in two cases. Five patients

reported side-effects, which included morning headaches (2), morning

sleepiness (2), and delusions/hallucinations (1); these symptoms

resolved with decreased dosage. The mean duration of follow-up was 14

months (range 9-25 months), with eight patients experiencing

continued benefit with melatonin beyond 12 months of therapy.

" CONCLUSIONS: In this series, persistent benefit with melatonin

beyond 1 year of therapy occurred in most but not all patients.

Melatonin can be considered as a possible sole or add-on therapy in

select patients with RBD. Prospective, long-term, controlled trials

with melatonin are warranted in a larger number of patients with RBD

associated with a variety of neurologic symptoms and disorders. "

Further,

Melatonin: therapeutic use in sleep disorders.

PMID: 9337448

QUOTE: " Limited data from generally short-term trials and anecdotal

reports suggest that melatonin may be effective in several of these

sleep disorders. Melatonin use in jet lag appears to decrease jet lag

symptoms and hasten the return to normal energy levels. Melatonin may

be helpful in rotating shift schedules to improve sleep quality and

maintain normal circadian rhythm. In some patients with insomnia,

melatonin appears to induce sleep onset. "

No telling how deep this abbit hole goer, but it's quite clear that

scientific proof exists that melatonin works well in individuals who

need it.
