Sheri, I understand that the reason Asian women don't have menopausal symptoms is because of their larger consumption of soy. It's a staple over there; I wish more people over here knew the healing qualities it possesses. All I hear lately, especially on thyroid lists, is that it's bad for hypers. I have serious doubts to the validity of that statement, given the correct balance with the rest of the nutrition you put into your body.

Thyroid and Menopause

Hi Everyone:

Doesn't seem like we have many members still at this site???

Anyway, I just thought I'd post this to see if anyone has "The Answer". It's a story, I'll try to make it short and to the point.

8 years ago, I started Menopause "I can only use terrible words for living life like that" 4 years after using anything natural I could find and refusing Hormone Replacement I ended up very sick with Hyperthyroidism and Graves. I was one of the fortune ones because I found 's site on Hyperthyroidism.

I thought what have I got to lose, so besides going on "Thyroid Medication,Tapazol" I also broke down and started "HRT" Within a month I was feeling better. Went off Tapazol after about 6 months, stayed on "HRT"

It's been 3 years this May, hyperthyroidism and graves are obviously much better.

2 months ago I was looking for reasons for some problems I am having. I found a site (survey) discussing Menopause and HRT, what they had to say sounded like some of my symptoms, (allergies, eyesite becoming much worse (they claim in extreme cases HRT can cause blindness in some women), and right leg aching, so I went off the HRT pills 2 month ago.

Within 1 week the sneezing stopped. (For 2 years I had been sneezing every few minutes along with sinus trouble and runny nose all day) (I had been blaming weakend ammune system for these new allergies due to my thyroid) HRT obviously causes these problems in my body.

Now I am off HRT (Yoorah) but wait a minute, no celebration here, now the Horrible symptoms have started all over again.

Will these terrible menopausal symptoms trigger Hyperthyroidism again?

Does anyone have the secret ingredient to stop this?

HRT only postpones the inevitable, when you have to stop them everything starts at the beginning, besides giving a suseptible person more severe medical problems.

I do not want to sneeze all day, (my family kept saying, go see a doctor there is something wrong with a person that sneezes so much) nor do I want to continue have leg pains (flabitis, varicos veins) or go blind.

They say the Chinese women don't get these symptoms, is this true? What is in their bodies to help prevent it? Sheri

Hi Shari, I'm not so sure that Donna's statement about Asians eating large consumptions of soy is true. But then, I am one of the people who has been saying bad things about soy on the hyper lists.

Here is a link that addresses soy consumption in Asia:

http://www.westonaprice.org/myths_truths/myths_truths_soy.html

Myth: Use of soy as a food dates back many thousands of years.

Truth: Soy was first used as a food during the late Chou dynasty (1134-246 BC), only after the Chinese learned to ferment soy beans to make foods like tempeh, natto and tamari.

Myth: Asians consume large amounts of soy foods.

Truth: Average consumption of soy foods in Japan and China is 10 grams (about 2 teaspoons) per day. Asians consume soy foods in small amounts as a condiment, and not as a replacement for animal foods.

etc. etc. I have more links if you are interested.

Other than that little tidbit contribution, I really don't have anything else to offer, as I have not reached that phase of my life. I hope that the hyperthyroidism doesn't come back to you this time around.

I hope you find some answers.

Pam B.

Dear Sheri,

I think we have a good number of people on this list--and we certainly have good QUALITY people on this list.

As far as I understand, Chinese women eat lots of tofu, which I think helps prevent menopausal symptoms. Also, did you ever read Dr. Lee's book, "What Your Doctor Won't Tell You About Menopause," or something like that title, which a lot of us have spoken about? He explains about menopausal symptoms in the West being caused not by not having enough estrogen, but actually by having TOO MUCH estrogen, from eating meat, chemicals in the soil and in our food supply, etc., and then, when the estrogen starts to decline, we have a huge drop that causes the symptoms, while Chinese women have a gentle, gradual drop as nature intended.

Have you tried the supplements and other stuff recommends to deal with your symptoms? Let us know what you've tried and haven't tried, and maybe some of us can help guide you through this.

Best,

AntJoan

I also will not take HRT but at this point is not yet a problem. Have you tried Estroven (found at health food stores)? Perhaps you should find a nauropath who can help with a natural, safer approach. Too many side affects with the HRT! Mona

Get a female panel done so you know what is going on---dhea too--that

will help!!

I don't know much more about synthroid and it's effects--the others

here can help. tina

Hi and welcome! sorry for what you're going through. I have a few questions. How

old are you? Have you had your female hormones tested to see if you are indeed

menopausal?

I also have Hashi's and have absolutely no problems sleeping. I don't have the

symptoms you describe; however, there is one lady in my Hashi support group who

does have some of the same symptoms as you. I'm not positive if she has

insomnia though. I think she's around 50.

Another lady in her 30's has similar symptoms. I don't think she has hot flashes

though.

i don't think you're going crazy. i think something is definitely happening in

your body. we just have to figure out what.

Wish I could tell you...hopefully someone else in this forum will be able to

give you some ideas. hugs, sheila

Last year the Dr. had me get a routine blood test and my TSH was out of

range showing that I was hypothyroid. I asked instead of the medicine if I

could try increasing the amount of iodine (in table salt because I don't use

any) and I can't think of the name right now but it is the amino acid that

is in chicken because those two things stimulate the production of the

thyroid hormone. I also told the Dr I had been eating a lot of cabbage and

broccoli...those cruciferous vegetables can block your bodies absorption of

the thyroid hormone. So I told the Dr I would eat less of those vegetables

and up the other stuff that is stupposed to increase the production of the

thyroid hormone. She said ok try it and come back in 4 months for another

blood test. It was about the same. She precribled me the medicine and told

me to come back in 4 months to check. I didn't take the medicine. I wanted

to try to see if I could pray the problem away and keep up with my home

remedy.

My TSH was worse in 4 months. I was even more hypothyroid. Way out of

range so she said take the medicine.

Ready for the point of my story?

I didn't gain a pound before the first test or the second or the third. Or

even now. In fact I have been the same weight for about 6 years. Give or

take 3-5 lbs depending on what is going on.

I listen to because I do the 3-5 lb. rock and beat myself up when I am

up and I just want peace with my body and food.

Did I not gain weight due to the naturally slender principals I have been

working on?

Good luck with your journey.

My weight wasn't affected but the medicine makes me feel better. I do have

more energy and before I would experience bone chilling cold (did I mention

I live in NY?) but I notice my body thermastat is much better. Oh...my

eyebrows look better too. I didn't realize it but I had lost the outer edge

of my eyebrows while I was having the underactive thyroid and now they grew

back and look better.

The only draw back to the medicine was that for about 3 months on it I lost

gobs of hair. No bald spots but when I washed it alot came out. It stopped

now. The Dr said as your body adjusts to the medicine it stops and it did.

Get the blood work done.

Your thyroid controls alot. Stuff more important than your weight!

Thanks for the insight into some of the issues.  I have gained 15 lbs in the

last 3 months for no apparant reason, my joints (elbow, hip and knees) are

aching, a third of my eyebrows are thinning, hair and skin have dried out,

breathlessness, and a new onset of panic attacks which I control well with

breathing techniques.  I work in a high stress corporate job but this is a bit

much for only stress!

I am a " hot " mess.  The test results come back tomorrow and hopefully with some

answers.  I have struggled with weight issues but not to this extent.  I am

hopeful that I will start to feel better soon.  I just hope the Dr can determine

what is menopause, possible thyroid, or just the perils of getting older.  I'm

53 and tend to take good care of myself.  Though you couldn't tell it lately, I

feel like I'm 80.

Boy, I can really relate! I am 46 and am the heaviest I've ever been (185lbs).

I was down to about 140 lbs four years ago and was happy. It didn't last too

long though and my weight started creeping up when I started a more sedentary

job about 2 1/2 years ago.

I have had hypothyroidism for maybe ten years and am now beginning menopause. I

have pain in some joints, but primarily my hips which has really effected my

work out routine. I had my thyroid checked and it was only off a little; I am

starting HRT (the patch) and hope that helps with some of the misery. I just

can't help thinking there has to be something more physically wrong cuz I have

never had this much trouble before (and in so many areas). I AM MISERABLE:

weight gain, hot flashes, poor sleep, pain in my hips all the time (waddle

instead of walk), hair falling out by the handfuls, clothes don't fit, look and

feel old and dumpy...UGH!

I have been listening to for about four months and now have The Inner

Weigh and all its associated freebies. I have moments where I feel better and

believe I have the power to change things, but so far physically I have not seen

any signs of improvement. I too hope the doctor may be able to provide some

answers if I keep asking (since so far they have not been able to figure out

what is causing the hip pain).

I really love being part of this group where at least you find you are not the

only one dealing with whatever your particular issue is at the moment. Thanks!

Hi M - I haven't been posting for a while, so hello everyone. I've

been lurking and just wanted to respond because I too was having weird

unexplained hip pain and a lot of the same symptoms you are. After a LONG

time going from doctor to doctor I've just been diagnosed with spondylitis,

initiating in the hips. I was SO HAPPY to know what was going on. My

question for you is, have you had bloodwork done to rule out arthritic or

autoimmune type stuff? Primiarly sed rate and CRP would tell you. Anyway

this was just what happened with me. Good luck!

Wow, , thank you. I am just so glad to hear that someone else has had

similar problems. The doctor did bloodwork to test for rheumatoid arthritis,

but that was it, I think. I will do a little research on my own before my next

appointment. Thanks again!
