Jan,

Any cold that includes a fever and a cough for over two weeks, needs checked by

a dr. He could have pneumonia or bronchitis or strep throat, all of which have

potential dire consequences if not treated.

I hate to go to the ped and I hate antibiotics even worse, but sometimes they

are necessary evils.

We use Robitussin for coughs, Robitussin DM, works well.

Hope your little guy feels better.

My son has had a cold for a bit over two weeks now. He mainly has a

dry cough that comes and goes in fits. Where it wakes him up, or

starts coughing and can't stop, almost vomiting. There is no phelm.

He has a low temp under 100 off and on. We have increased his C,

echinacea, etc hoping he will beat it. We are almost ready to see the

doc if it does not stop soon.

I am wondering what you all have found to give your kids for coughing

when vapor rub doesn't help. We have done steam, cool vapor all that.

I can't get him to take any over the counter medicines, not to mention

all the food coloring and junk in them anyway.

Are there any products without all that junk? If not, can we get a

script for something and how do we go about getting it compounded?

Does the doc have to write specifics on the script for that?

Thanks. He seems to hardly cough at all this afternoon but I think I

will call in the am anyway.

He is allergic to antibiotics, so who knows what they have up their

sleeve for those kids. He has only needed antibiotics once and that

lasted three days before a reaction, which we stopped giving it.

Robitussin...will have to get some. I have tons of that cruddy

purple triaminic, and red stuff..my dtr used to take it, but he

won't go near it. Seems kids know better than we do sometimes.

Jan - I've used Delsym in the past for coughs - it's a great 12 hour

cough suppresant that I usually give right before bed and it carries

them right through till the morning. I don't have any on hand to

check about additives though. Also, we use oil of oregano for

anything an antibiotic would be given for. The oil is pretty bitter,

but if you put it into a syringe with a little orange juice, it

works. Wayyyyy better than antibiotics!! Just used it for myself for

bronchitis! good luck.

Hi Jan, for dry irritating coughs, we've tried a tea or gruel of slippery elm

successfully

(thank you for turning us on to slippery elm). The slippery elm coats

the throat

and eases the urge to cough, at least for a little while.

We dissolve the powdered slippery elm into a cup of hot water. You can make it

as thin or

thick as you want. Add a little cinnamon or honey, and it tastes very good.

NOW brand is

reasonably priced and dissolves well.

On several occassions my mom has needed to take a round of

antibiotics for this exact, unrelenting dry cough. I see

antibiotics are not an option this time, but a visit to the doctor

certainly would be a good idea. Ugh. Not something I like to do!

Jan, head out to your local health food store/vitamin shop and pick

up a bottle of Sambucol for future illnesses. I don't know if it

will help for a cold that has lingered so long, but it certainly

seems to lessen illness times in our house when given at the first

sign of illness. I am using it right now to ward off a cold (I'm

taking off for a weekend of fun and I'd hate to be sick!).

The magic ingredient is elderberry. The taste isn't that bad,

either.

For a nasty night time cough, I've always used things like

Robitussin, Triaminic, etc. Necessary evils. You can also up the

zinc.

This sounds like the cough I had when I was eating food with red dye

and without No-Fenol enzyme.

If it is related to a virus [like a cold or flu], I give vitamin A and

C, olive leaf extract, and/or Virastop enzyme. I have not had to give

regular cold medicine in over two years.

keep in stock here. Virastop is being delivered at 5pm so we will

try adding some of that tonight.
