Dear Linton,

Your OS (consultant) can refer you to have one done if there is a good

reason why it needs to be done. That is how I had mine done --an MRI

scan-if that what you mean by bone scan? My consultant referred me for

diagnostic reasons---he wasn't sure if my osteoarthritis was causing my

pain or spinal stenosis. There are usually quite a long waiting list

for scans, but it does come round. (They are not easy, by the way, if

you are at all claustrophobic as I am.)

I suppose there may be places you get one done privately---believe

someone (Des?) very recently wrote about going to Belgium? France? Why

do you want it done?

Hi Eleanor,

My OS over here has said there is nothing more he can do to help my

condition so I am now booked in overseas for a resurfacing. Because

of the metalwork in my acetabulum these will disturb a CT or MRI

scan but a bonescan can be done and although it is not necessary my

new OS has said it would be welcome.

I don't really know anything about a bonescan but might as well get

one done if it's possible.

Gosh-am afraid I don't know what to suggest, as am not medical enough.

Don't really even know the medical name for a bone scan. Anyone else

have any ideas?

Hi Everyone

To try and find the cause of my pain and problems with my left BHR I had

a " bone scan " at Pembury NHS hospital in Kent UK about a year ago, I was

given an injection of radiation which travels around the body looking

for points of infection and weakness of bone/cartilage, I was told to

leave the hospital and come back 4 hours later and not to have contact

with babies, small children, the old or weak, later they just scanned my

hips and knees, it showed some " abnormal behavior " at my BHR pelvis cup

(thought to be infection) and some osteo-arthritis in my right knee

which suffered a major accident and trauma on millennium new years eve

(another story!)

The scan machine was quite old looking and I just had to lay on a bed

while the machine was positioned over me, quite unlike the MRI " tube " I

went in to assess which ligaments I had damaged in my knee in 2000.

Hope this helps abit!

Cheers

Hi,

I was considering a BHR and went to the Joint Cinic at Droitwich, the they

suggested a Dexa scan to exclude osteoporosis before a resurfacing was

considered. Is that what you are looking for?

Dear ,

But what is the end of your story??? Are you still having pain and

problems? Was there infection? If the pain and problems are gone---how

did you get rid of them???

Very very curious,

From Eleanor who is having pain and problems with a right BHR (done in

the UK) at 5 months.

Hi,

It's as an additional aid to determine the extent of AO to my hip or

any other problems, prior to my resurfacing. It sounds like the scan

Steve had done is the one. Cheers Steve for the info. Now I just

have to find out where to get one done privately.

Hi Eleanor

I'm scheduled to have a large head metal on metal THR on the 13 May, I'm

on Flucloxacillin 500mg (anti-biotic) 4 times a day, the surgeon is far

from sure I have an infection (my blood test results are high, but not

really high, the biopsies they drew off showed signs of a " skin type "

infection).

However the only thing that reduces the pain at all is the anti-biotics.

If they find an infection under the femurs prosthesis they will remove

it and put me back together, then in a few months hopefully they will

fit the new hip, they are hopefully going to use the BHR pelvis

prosthesis with the new femur part.

At the moment my femur is slipping outwards from the prosthesis, as if

the bone inside the ball has disappeared, but the pain is controllable

at present.

Hope you're not in too much pain and you can sort it out quickly (it's

taken 18 months to get here for me! It's only due to a simple xray

finally showing the failure that anythings happened!

Good luck

I haven't had one done, I just know what the are.

The other kind of scan is a " radionuclide scan " which is used

to check for unusual metabolic activity in the bone. It's

used to check for some bone diseases and for some cancer patients

(my mother had a radionuclide scan when she was diagnosed with

lung caqncer a number of years ago, for example).

I'm sorry I can't help you locate a radiologist to get this done

privately, but the UK health system is a complete mystery to

Yanks like me. ;-)

I had ordinary x-rays initially, which showed oa, then i was given

arthrograms where a dye is injected into the hip socket and

continual x-rays are done followed with a cat scan. I then had

arthroscopies on both hips where the true extent of the damage was

shown... i can't have mri because of metal (implants in my eyes.) i

am now scheduled for bilateral resurfacing... my hospital is the

oswestry orthopaedic where my surgeon is professoe james richardson.
