My plumonologist OKed it, and I have been using it for almost a year and have been infection free. Muston also is using it with great success for a long period of time.

Inhaling any oil based products directly into the lungs does not seem like a healthful decision. Please do not do this. As Debbie has stated in her experience working with these oils they are not intended for inhalation. I'm concerned about lipoid pneumonia resulting. Although rare they are difficult to treat. Tea tree oil has not undergone necessary studies likely due to economic and other reasons that I'm aware to determine if inhaling it via nebulizer is safe. Just because something is natural does not make it safe. We only have one set of lungs. Please be careful.

I agree that its important to take the advise of a physician, however MANY are not up on lipoid pneumonia. Inhaling tea tree oil in my opinion is a potentially dangerous and unwise idea and I worry about new people and in particular parents desperate for anything to help their child who may take this risk without speaking to their child's doctors. I am aware that Muston and others are involved with alternative medicine. Mr. Muston also thinks he is almost cured and if we all followed his lead that our bronchiectasis would simply go away. Bronchiectasis does not work this way, and just because its alterative medical products tend to be considered natural does not make them regulated or safe. Please be careful.... There are degrees of bronchiectasis. Some are more involved than others and

take more serious treatments. I do not believe Mr. Muston believes ALL bronch

patients can be helped by alternative means. But some can. And, there is also

NO cure for bronch, only a way for some folks to keep it in check by serious

discipline regarding exercise, cutting air pollution in the immediate environment,

good nutrition and, yes, even the use of Tea Tree Oil as a natural way to stop

bacterial infections.

All bronch sufferers have to work at getting healthy and staying healthy. It is a

lifetime assignment. I believe Mr Muston would agree with that.

I am sorry your bronchiectasis is so severe, perhaps even CF, and I know you

are waiting for a lung transplant. This is a sadness for me. But, please, allow

others the benefit of alternative solutions.

I understand that there are various degrees of bronchiectasis. My GP says its rare for anyone's bronchiectasis to more or less go into a remission of symptoms. We have had discussions about bronchiectasis. My infectious disease specialist believes that bronchiectasis must be taken seriously with infections over seen by medical doctors and treated early on. Pseudomonas aeruginosa almost took my life at age twenty. My parents were told that I might not make it out of the ICU. I was a very sick girl. Never underestimate the seriousness of lung disorders. Mild can change quickly into moderate or severe. Lungs are unpredictable. They trick the best pulmonologists, infectious disease specialists, patients and families. With cystic fibrosis some doctors term a patients CF mild. Problem with a mild label is that CF lung disease most often does not stay mild. Its

progressive just as non-CF bronchiectasis deemed mild may progress and with a mild diagnosis one may not take their illness as seriously and stay away from doctors or go without necessary treatments, because they are mild. Problem is that bronchiectasis is a sneaky, insidious disorder, and can creep up and change when least expected. Even if one is asymptomatic they still have bronchiectasis and their symptoms though controlled can and often do come back at some point in time. Benefits of alternatives are moot really, as they are often (but not always) without proof or studies to back them up. Of course this does not mean that some of them do not work, but without out acceptable clinical trials we do not even always know if they are safe let alone effective. Some people truly believe that "anything" natural is safe. They will even advocate about stopping medications and tell others not to go to doctors, or stop meds without telling

their doctors ir their child's doctors, etc. This is dangerous, tea tree oil for one is NOT a proven treatment for bronchiectasis at least not that I am aware of. Certainly not yet considered standard treatment protocol within North America. We do not know if it can safely be inhaled. In fact, people working in health food stores will even tell you not to inhale tea tree oil. I'm sure that even a naturopath will say the same. These alternative professionals to give them their credit do have their limits - at least the good and caring professionals. People's lungs and health are at stake. I will keep discussing this topic as it keeps coming up and until at some point clinical studies are done (full studies) to prove the safety and efficiency of tea tree oil. Some people may think I'm terrible for doing so, I'm truly not, I do care about others and do not want them to potentially harm their lungs by inhaling an oil based substance. Once harm is done to the lungs the damage

is done and cannot be repaired. Herein lies the problem. Whilst my bronchiectasis is severe and advanced, others with a lesser degree of lung damage might end up with more lung damage if they inhale something that it potentially unsafe. Adults can choose, but a child with bronchiectasis cannot, so yes, I will speak up. As my original GP once said to my mom when I was an infant, "Can you get that kid to shut up." I was crying. " Still keep on talking and writing and obviously will not stay quiet on a topic that I feel is potentially dangerous to one's health. As a child my parents took me to the alternative professionals, put me through a special diet, drank some terrible cough concoction my mom cooked up (awful from an old medical book of her parents), have been through Mannetech and other multilevel marketing schemes that take advantage of chronically-ill persons and their families, etc, etc. When someone says eat this or don’t eat this and

you will eliminate all or most of your symptoms and if you don’t follow my instructions its your own fault more or less that your sick well to say the least it does not go over well. Like The time last summer at The ENTs office when another man (patient) told me if I eliminate all foods containing -ose (lactose, etc) and including milk that I’d be cured and off my O2 tank in no time. I politely thanked him and though well if this man is cured of his symptoms why is he seeing an ENT? Just does not wash with me. Have been there, done that, bought the t-shirt and feel that its best to stick to medical doctors even if some of them are crummy. My MD okayed Tea Tree oil.

The research facility in Australia that tests TTO cannot get

the funding to do trials for using it in nebulizers or steam.

I am using it and consider myself a long time user after two years.

I have not had a serious infection in all that time, even after

catching a particularly nasty cold, a circumstance that used

to put me under with pneumonia.

But, I am only one person, with one supportive MD, so > One must

decide for oneself whether to use it or not.

I respect your intelligence and confidence in pursuing your convictions.

You are a tough lady.

Still I cannot overlook the fact that my health has improved more

than I ever expected, due to discipline and dedication to my routine of

breathing exercises, nutrition, clean air and >>> well <<< you know what.

You are so young. My hopes are that you will receive your transplant

and live a long, healthy, happy and productive life.

We are not physicians and any advise given in this forum from laymen, should not be construed as medical advise, they are merely opinions (some of which are alarming and without professional medical backup) and personal experiences. So far, I know of no one either within or outside of this group, who has experienced any negative side effects that can be specifically attributed to Tea Tree Oil. So far, all personal experiences that I have read about and have personally experienced, have been positive.

I agree that its important to take the advise of a physician, however MANY are not up on lipoid pneumonia. Inhaling tea tree oil in my opinion is a potentially dangerous and unwise idea and I worry about new people and in particular parents desperate for anything to help their child who may take this risk without speaking to their child's doctors. I am aware that Muston and others are involved with alternative medicine. Mr. Muston also thinks he is almost cured and if we all followed his lead that our bronchiectasis would simply go away. Bronchiectasis does not work this way, and just because its alterative medical products tend to be considered natural does not make them regulated or safe.

Inhaling any oil based products directly into the lungs does not seem like a healthful decision. Please do not do this. As Debbie has stated in her experience working with these oils they are not intended for inhalation. I'm concerned about lipoid pneumonia resulting. Although rare they are difficult to treat. Tea tree oil has not undergone necessary studies likely due to economic and other reasons that I'm aware to determine if inhaling it via nebulizer is safe. Just because something is natural does not make it safe. We only have one set of lungs. Please be careful.

my wife works as a respiratory therapist and works

with the doctors all the time and knows first hand

that they are to busy to research all holistic med,s.

it is not unacceptable for a person suffering from a

lung aliment to try alternative drugs/therapies and

any doctor that is not willing to talk to the patient

about using these with conventional therapies is maybe

not worth having at all. It is the responsibility of

the patient to help them self as much as possible.This

web site is designed to serve as a support group as

well as a information outlet for any one that finds

something that might help. because in the long run

that is what this is here for.

I agree that a person can try some things, but they need to know that inhaling an oil based product into their lungs is potentially harmful. In that regard harming their lungs is unacceptable. I am trying to get a lung transplant list through no fault of my own. Taking something like tea tree oil and telling others that it works for you and is legit when there has been no large scale clinical studies to back it is unhelpful. I agree that this is a "support" group and that we should be supportive, but I do worry about those trying these alternatives that are potentially harmful to delicate lung tissues. Its good that you MD okayed the use of tea tree oil, however I still have concerns for those who are nebulizing it. By nebulizing the tiny particles of an oil based product are being inhaled directly into the lungs which in my opinion may lead to a difficult to treat pneumonia. This is the concern. Steaming would be much safer route than directly nebulizing an essential oil. I'd be much less wary if this substance undergoes rigorous testing and yes, the Australian based firm should receive a grant for such studies. Until that time my lungs will not be treated with TTO and I would hope that children are not being given nebulized TTO. Yes, I too hope to receive new lungs!!! I agree that its important to take the advise of a physician, however MANY are not up on lipoid pneumonia. Inhaling tea tree oil in my opinion is a potentially dangerous and unwise idea and I worry about new people and in particular parents desperate for anything to help their child who may take this risk without speaking to their child's doctors. I am aware that Muston and others are involved with alternative medicine. Mr. Muston also thinks he is almost cured and if we all followed his lead that our bronchiectasis would simply go away. Bronchiectasis does not work this way, and just because its alterative medical products tend to be considered natural does not make them regulated or safe.

Inhaling any oil based products directly into the lungs does not seem like a healthful decision. Please do not do this. As Debbie has stated in her experience working with these oils they are not intended for inhalation. I'm concerned about lipoid pneumonia resulting. Although rare they are difficult to treat. Yes, the advice on tea tree oil for one is extremely alarming and I still say dangerous and not backed up with good medical science and studies.

I agree that a person can try some things, but they need to know that inhaling an oil based product into their lungs is potentially harmful. In that regard harming their lungs is unacceptable. I am trying to get a lung transplant list through no fault of my own. Taking something like tea tree oil and telling others that it works for you and is legit when there has been no large scale clinical studies to back it is unhelpful.

I agree that this is a "support" group and that we should be supportive, but I do worry about those trying these alternatives that are potentially harmful to delicate lung tissues.

Yes, the advice on tea tree oil for one is extremely alarming and I still say dangerous and not backed up with good medical science and studies.

This group is a public a forum for all types of experiences. If I feel TTO has personally helped me, and in addition my plumonologist has oked it for me to use, then I will pass that along. I agree that a person can try some things, but they need to know that inhaling an oil based product into their lungs is potentially harmful. In that regard harming their lungs is unacceptable. I am trying to get a lung transplant list through no fault of my own. Taking something like tea tree oil and telling others that it works for you and is legit when there has been no large scale clinical studies to back it is unhelpful.

I agree that this is a "support" group and that we should be supportive, but I do worry about those trying these alternatives that are potentially harmful to delicate lung tissues.

My MD okayed Tea Tree oil.

The research facility in Australia that tests TTO cannot get

the funding to do trials for using it in nebulizers or steam.

I am using it and consider myself a long time user after two years.

I have not had a serious infection in all that time, even after

catching a particularly nasty cold, a circumstance that used

to put me under with pneumonia.

But, I am only one person, with one supportive MD, so > One must

decide for oneself whether to use it or not.

I respect your intelligence and confidence in pursuing your convictions.

You are a tough lady.

Still I cannot overlook the fact that my health has improved more

than I ever expected, due to discipline and dedication to my routine of

breathing exercises, nutrition, clean air and >>> well <<< you know what.

You are so young. My hopes are that you will receive your transplant

and live a long, healthy, happy and productive life.

Adults can. Parents one the other hand should not be trying TTO out on their children's delicate and developing lungs. In my opinion, adults shouldn't be doing this either. There is not enough information to back this as a safe treatment. Do not nebulize TTO. I will say steaming makes more sense and at least would likely be a safe alternative to nebulizing. Yes, but these TWO SUPPORTIVE MDS are NOT BACKED BY MEDICAL RESEARCH. They are giving you the okay to do something that may be potentially harmful. TTO is not intended to be taken internally. As an external treatment fine, for cleaning fine, steaming okay ... Nebulizing ... potentially harmful, Will your doctors still agree that inhaling TTO is okay if you develop a difficulty to treat pneumonia from inhaling an oil based product? Not trying to be mean here, stubborn yes, because it is not known how safe this is or what the long term effects might be. Not to mention that everyone's lungs are different. Some people will see TTO mentioned here and say, "great," try it and without even speaking to their doctor. Yes, its their choice, but everyone's lungs are different and some require closer follow up, and so on. And getting back to the point nebulizing and unknown is a health and safety issue. Thanks and

I agree with you one hundred percent. Research may find out one day that TTO

is the perfect bronch medication, but until they’ve actually done years

of study, no one knows what it’ll really do—good or bad. There have been way too many wonder

drugs out there that even after years of research have wound up causing irreparable

damage. If you want to try it out

on yourself, that’s your decision.

But, giving it to a child when there is no research to back up the

decision, is inviting trouble down the road. This is just the humble opinion of a

mother of five.
