RE: Coconut oil for healing infant?

Hi Karissa,

All of the ways I can think of to help with a cold naturally are not

things you can use with an 11 month old. I've never heard of coconut oil being

used for this sort of thing. I have a wonderful book called Healing With

Whole Foods by Pitchford. The book is geared toward people who know

something about Chinese medicine, but has a nice index in the back for

different

problems. It also goes over the healing properties of many types of foods.

Here's what the book says about coconut: Warning thermal nature (this would

be good in the winter); sweet flavor; strengthening; quells wind (wind is

indicated when aches and pains or symptoms move around in the body from one

place to another); hemostatic; tonifies the heart. Used for weakness,

emaciation, nosebleed, and childhood malnutrition (Could this be the reason

someone

would suggest this for a child? Do you think your child is a little

malnourished?).

Coconut is a good source of saturated fat for vegetarians; however, it

can be dangerous when used by those with excess saturated fat and cholesterol

in the diet (for example, a diet concentrated in heavy meats, eggs, and

dairy).

Coconut milk is warming, sweet, clears the effects of summer heat

(certainly not a factor here now!), quenches thirst, and builds the yin fluids

(that would be body fluids). It is often helpful in treating edema resulting

from heart weakness and diabetes.

Overall it doesn't sound like the best choice for your child's problem,

but you can be the judge of that.

Now here are some foods the book says are good for coughs:

Dry cough: banana, black sesame seeds, fig, peach; hacking cough,

lemon/lime; also helping with a cough would be asparagus and carrots these both

help

to moisten.

As you said, a good steam environment would really help to moisten things

up. You could take him in the shower when you get home with lots of steam to

see if that would improve the situation. Also making sure he is getting

plenty of fluids which I am sure you are already doing.

You could also call the nurses line and see if they have any other

suggestions for natural remedies to manage his cough. You could tell them

you'd

prefer to treat him naturally if possible and they may have some suggestions.

They could let you know the things to look for to know this is when you really

should bring in your baby.

Good luck with the healing process. Marie.

a cough that is horrible sounding, and it seems to cause him pain and

he has trouble getting it out, like he's trying to restrict it. He

cries afterwards. I know this is not a natural healing site - my

question is if coconut oil is worth a shot, how much to give him, and

can I just buy the spectrum organic coconut oil at the store (probably

not unrefined) if I can't get the other stuff close to here? I have

family members making me feel " evil " - like he could end up

hospitalized with pneumonia if I don't take him in to get him

antibiotics. Right now I'm refusing to do that. He has never been

sick before. He got adjusted today and his C1 was out even though he

was just adjusted Friday. This was a different chiropractor who

specializes in children's health, who agreed with me it's probably

bronchitis. We were traveling...tonight he'll finally be back in his

own room with a humidifier.

Thanks for any tips,

Karissa

Thanks the wonderful " healing food " ideas Marie! I had read several

times that coconut oil has antimicrobial/antiviral properties, I

thought on this site as well. Since I believe he has bronchitis,

probably viral, I thought this may be helpful. Does anyone know

anything about coconut oil being good for the immune system or

fighting off infections?

Thanks again!

Don't forget garlic, nature's antibiotic! Would the baby take any mashed

garlic mixed in with these other good foods?

While I suggest the above remedy to promote recovery of any infection, I

also strongly recommend that you work with a professional in the care of

your very young child whose health and life depends largely on what you

choose to do for him. When an infant is this sick, knowledge and experience

are the safer routes.

Sincerely,

Cheryl in CA

The reason for the coconut oil suggestion is because coconut oil is

anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti viral. That of course is if the

coconut oil is not refined, which is also refered to as being RBD. The

purest form is Wilderness Family Naturals. The pine oil is also

fermented which adds to the benefit of the product.

Herbal enemas work very well for infants.

OK, This is a grandma speaking here and this is what I would do.

I would start with maybe 1/4th teaspoon of Cod Liver Oil (CLO) every day and

keep it up (like I would keep giving it to him daily, it is going to build up

his immunities). Next I would get some Umcka and give him the max dose for his

age, continue for 5 to 10 after he is well. Some one already suggested garlic, I

agree with this.

If he is coughing hard, bring him into the bathroom and turn the shower on and

let the steam build up, this will help. You can also consider Ivy Calm. It is

helpful for the bronchial system and seems to work wonders on coughs. You should

check with the maker though as to how much he could take. My bottle here only

gives amounts for 2 and up.

Give him LOTS of fluids, this is a must and maybe the most important thing. If

he does not want to drink, make Icicle pops, juice-cycles, Knox blocks with

juice or even milk, (use one package of gelatin to one cup of liquid, make half

the liquid hot enough to melt the gelatin) do know though, the milk may make him

phelmyer so you may want to wait on this one a bit.

Simmer some water on the stove and add some rosemary and/or mint to the water,

this will help things break up, plus it smells great.

I would also try to get some coconut oil and raw apple cider vinegar into him

too. A half teaspoon of the ACV morning and night, can be flavored with up to

equal amount of a natural molasses. I just think the coconut oil is good for

every one so I always suggest this. I do not know how much but I would think a

teaspoon some how each day. You can do it in a smoothie, on toast, etc. Can be

done in parts too, not all at once.

Baby your baby, he is sick and needs to be treated so. Pamper him with extra

cuddling time, rock him, keep him as close to you as you can, if you are

cooking, let him cuddle up in a blanket near you in a safe place, or lay on the

couch while you are vacuuming. Let him nap in the room you are in if possible.

Babies and kids always feel better when a parent is in sight when they are sick.

We almost always let our kids sleep with us when they were sick, or on the floor

next to our bed on a bunch of blankets.

Keep him dressed warmly but don't over do it. Too much clothing or blankets can

cause the fever to raise.

Watch him carefully and do not hesitate to bring him to a professional. Little

ones can go down hill quickly and it is better to be safe than sorry.

Oh, one last thing, try to keep him slightly elevated when he sleeps, this will

help things drain and with the congestions and cough.

Blessings and let us know how he is doing.

Kimi
