to our office on this. They stated it could be the sugar in the

Gatorade that is causing the issues. They suggest that if you are

drinking Gatorade to rinse your mouth often to get the sugar off your

teeth. Gatorade has as much or more sugar than some soda. Not sure if

this will help, but it is the answer I got when I inquired about a

cause.

It seems like we all are making the connection that weight loss surgery

affects the teeth but the dentists don't. How do we go to a dentist and not

" waste " our money if the dentist isn't going to fix our teeth the proper way?

How do we educate the dentist?

I am 56 years old, 3.5 years out with a loss of 140 lbs. I am basically in

great health and

have no problems except for secondary hyperparathyroidism. What that means is

that

because my vit D is so poorly absorbed after the bypass my body compensates by

increasing the parahtyroid hormone to help with blood calcium levels. I am

improving

dramatically since getting weekly injections of vit D (50,000iu) for the past 6

months. My

guess is that I will need this for life. This fall I went to my dentist. I am

the wife of a

retired dentist and my dental care has always been top notch. Before I went I

had my

hsband take a look and he about blew a gasket. Decay was rampant, and my enamal

was

eroding and gums were receding. He gave me an indepth lesson on brushing and

applying topical fluoride at least once daily. He was concerned I would have

decay under

my crowns and would need extensivework. I then went to the other dentist who

was also

shocked at the rapid decline of my teeth and the active decay process going on.

He said

this wasn't a brushing problem, you have some sort of chemical imbalance going

on

(remember my vit D,calcium stuff above). Her took care of the most immediate

severe

decay where I had chipped a tooth and said he did not want to do anymore until I

got the

decay process under control. His suggestion was to keep brushing and use ACT

Restore

fluoride mouth wash faithfully. He suggested that rather than the gelcam

fluoride paste

because he said recent research had shown it was absorbed deep into the teeth

and would

help remineralize from the inside out rahter than just the outside layer with

the fluoride

paste. Fluoride takes the place of the calcium in the tooth structure and is

basically not

eroded nearly as raidly in an acid environment (decay) and basically makes the

teeth

stronger. I went back last Friday and he was pleased as punch since all the

decay process

had stopped and the teeth were remineralizing. He also encouraged me to tell

all of you

on this website so that you can prevent the decay from starting and also to keep

a close

watch. Anyway... I mentioned the gatorade concern I had read here on this

site. Of

course sugar is a bad thing for us but the problem can be prevented by brushing.

My

problem was not the result of gatorade (I only use it occasionally) but much

more likely

the after effect of imbalance due to malabsorption. I did not have these

problems the first

3 years but this all occurred in the past 9 months or so. That is the same time

frame as

my vit D and PTH issues but they were not checked prior to that so I can not say

if there

was a causal link. Take care, brush your teeth, use ACT fluoride mouth wash,

and get

regular check ups. Enjoy your gift offered by the MGB surgery as much s I am!

I guess I was lucky as my diabetic doctor checked my Vit D levels

about 6 months after my bypass and put me on 50,000 units. At first

it was 3 times a week and is now dropped to once a week. Its a

problem with diabetics, and he checked it because of that, not

because of the bypass surgery. There was a big study and lots of

writings in medical journals that year (2004) I have always had bad

teeth, lots of decay and actually mine are better now than before the

by pass surgery. My teeth are very soft and decay easily. When my

braces were taken off, I had a cavity in every tooth where the wire

touched.

Thank you so much for the response! I along with the advice of my

dentist have also started an agressive prevention routine as well.

She was as shocked as I was of the rapid decay, and I was her " first "

gastric bypass patient. She recrowned 5 of my teeth and has decided

to redo 6 more! She also prescribed a fluoride gel, a fluoride paste

and told me rinse with ACT mouthwash. So, I am hoping this will

prevent future problems with the malabsorbtion of what I am missing?

But,it does make me feel better to know it is not due to poor dental

hygeine or lack of care. I will continue with this preventive program

and hope for the best!

Thanks again!

Hi Margaret,

I would like to know more about your hyperparathyroidism and what

symptoms you experienced. I have been having severe joint pain that

travels from joint to joint for the past week. My PCP has ordered

an enormous amount of blood work and we are waiting on the results.

My thyroid and vitamin D levels are among the list of labs that she

ran.

Thanks,

W.

Hi ,

I did not have any symptoms that I can identify when I had the secondary

hyperparathryroidism. I do wonder if my problems with the unusual dental decay

was

related. I would not have know things were out of balance without the blood

work. I can say

though for a fact that overall I feel more energy and just plain better since I

have started

getting the D and than the parathyroid hormone (PTH) under control. I am still

not at normal

levels (started my shots of 50000 iu's of Vit D in august and am continuing. My

PTH levles

are still too high and vit D is still too low but improved dramatically. Dr.

thinks I will have to

continue the vit D for life since I obviously no longer absorb it. I had no

joint pain but vit D

and parathyroid have lots of different effects. Good luck running things down.

Be persistent.
