I had my thyroid surgery on Nov. 24 and came home on the 25th. My doctor done a

good job. He said, " My nob was as large as a golf ball. He had to take some

muscle tissues out, plus a few limp-noses. " Excuse my spelling here.

He didn't want me to go home so soon, but I was doing so good and had a lot of

help at home. I have a drain tube, which so far has collected 40ml's a day.

The color is changes to a lighter red now, today. I go back Monday to his

office for him to take out this drain tube. He had me get some Caltrate D to

take twice a day. Plus continue on my V's: B, other supplements I have been

taking to improve my immune system.

My throat is getting better today, I can swallow without too much pain now.

I am using my breathing pump to help my lungs get stronger. Will let you guys

know later on my progress if you like. Ann

PS: Just one question about the Caltrate D:

I was told Citracal with vitamin D is a better choice because it is absorbed

with or without food, and is supposedly better for bones. You might not have

bone issues, so it might not make a difference to you Ann.

Does anyone have knowledge of whether Caltrate D or Citrical with vitamin D is

better?

I sounds as if the surgeon was unable to spare the parathyroids. That

could mean additional medications to control calcium metabolism as well

as the thyroid.

Are you going to follow up with iodine ablation? Although that is a

straightforward procedure, the rules about how to do it vary between

states. Some require a hospital stay. Some recommend you spend a few

days in a hotel, where they change the linen daily. My son did it at

home, so I can describe the details for you.

Calcium citrate (in Citrical) provides its own acid (citric) to insure

absorption. Other supplements, such as calcium carbonate in Caltrate,

Tums, or dolomite, are better absorbed in an acidic environment, which

digestion of food supplies. It should be taken with food.

Caltrate typically has more elemental calcium per pill. Be sure to

compare actual calcium content and not the compounds. Caltrate can also

sometimes cause constipation. Citrical does not.

In this case, the vitamin D is probably as least as important as the

calcium content. Be careful not to get too much calcium, as this can be

toxic.

You should have an extended period within that six weeks, perhaps all of

it, without T4 medications. Sometimes, they will substitute T3, or there

is an anti-T4 drug they can give you at the last minute to neutralize

your hormone levels. They want you in an iodine deficit, so as much of

the radioactive injection will go into thyroid cells as possible.

Hi Ann,

It's good news that you're improving every day. I hope you will soon be feeling

strong, healthy, and better than you have in a long time. It must be good to

have the surgery behind you, and be on the mend. I'm very happy for you!

If you don't mind my asking, approximately how long did it take from the time

you discovered the lump to have a biopsy? Just curious, because it seems like

it's taking forever to get a diagnosis on mine. I always remember reading and

hearing, that we should see a doctor immediately if there is a lump or

thickening in a breast or elsewhere. Now I'm wondering what the point of

rushing to the doctor is, if they're going to take months to find out what it

is.

Back on 11-17 when I went to the endocrinologist, he said he was canceling the

radioactive uptake test and scan that was scheduled for tomorrow, because he

didn't think I needed it. Today I received a call to tell me how to prepare for

the test. After calling the endocrinologist's officet back to verify he did't

want me to have it, I had to cancel it myself.

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. In addition to good food and good

company, it was a gorgeous day here in FL! Wish I could send all of you some

warmth and sunshine! Not today though, it's raining. That's a good thing

though, because we need it.

I don't have a clue as to why my e-mail shows it is coming from H instead of my

e-mail address. It's not part of the e-mail address, but others in my address

book have told me this is happening too. So, if you see mail from H, it's me,

your account. In Mozilla's Thunderbird, Tools/Account Settings/ the

Hi Chuck,

Thanks, but never did that, and I've had the account since the mid 90s. It

started when I got a second computer, which is a laptop. Friends started

telling me that they had been deleting my e-mail because they didn't know who H

was. Who the H is H? LOL! I asked if they could see my e-mail address after

the H, and they said no only the H, until they opened the mail. Then they could

see the e-mail address.

I think AOL is trying to force me to download their software on the laptop.

After I wouldn't download the software to use their e-mail, they tried to get me

to download the AOL toolbar. I wouldn't do that either. That sounds paranoid,

but anyone who has had AOL knows it kind of takes over your computer. That's

why I'm determined not to put it on the new one.

When I just had one computer, I liked AOL mail. I could copy and past graphics

and photos into it, and send blind carbon copies so recipients didn't see the

list of e-mail addresses I sent mail to besides them. Now sometimes when I try

to choose someone from the address book to send mail to, it's covered up by an

ad that I can't get rid of, so there is no access to the address book.

If I click blind carbon copy, it will allow one e-mail address, before bouncing

back to the " To " space, where they would all be revealed. If I delete e-mail

from the laptop after it's read, it remains on the desktop, and must be deleted

a second time there. There doesn't seem to be a way to send to multiple

recipients without all the e-mail addresses showing.

It must be time to start using my Brighthouse e-mail address. I've had one for

a couple of years, but you know how some of us are about change. LOL!

Barb: Yesterday the doctor removed the drain tube and saw that the tape, which

was the paper type, caused a rash everywhere they put it. So today the use

another one. Thursday, I go back to him to check my neck and he should have the

Lab report, too.

It was in Aug. 10, when I went to my first ENT, and she found the lump in my

neck. She scheduled me the next week to have the biopsy, then a week later, I

had the thyroid scan. After the results of Pilliary Thyroid, which is a cancer,

she had me have a PET/Ct scan of whole body. That was two weeks after the other

scan. I didn't see her again until two mths later. They call to set up

surgery, without me know or see any test results, except the biopsy results. I

told them, I wanted to see my test results, etc, before any surgery. Finally

seeing her the second time and seeing the lab and scans info, I told her my

family wanted me to have a 2nd opinion. I got that appt. two weeks later in

Ocala with another ENT, who only does thyroid surgery. I decided to have him do

it, for my hospital, which I had to go to on my plan, was there also.

Anyway, he said the mass was hard and large as a golf ball, which was causing

me to cough and with a very sore thoat. He said, he felt he got it all. He

took some muscle tissue close by the mass and a large lymp nob toward my right

ear. It didn't show on the outside that much, most of it was growing inward.

I am glad it is over, now have three weeks to recoup, before doing any neck

stretching. They are looking into schedule me for the treatment. Have to check

my my health insurance, where to send me. He also thought my blood pressure

med, was causing some of my coughing and he will call my Primary Dr. to have him

change it.

I am pleased with all he has done. He seemed to really care for his patients.

Wow Ann! That seems outrageous that after they knew it was Cancer, they didn't

see you again for two months!

I'm happy for you that the worst is over. It's also good that you're pleased

Chuck: I am going to ask him if he had to take the parathyroid glands, too. I

have it on my list, when I see him again this Thursday. He does have me taking

Caltrate which has Calcium & V-D--600mg twice a day. There are several

Caltrates, which I forgot to take the box, which show them, to the doctor when I

went last Mon. Just to make sure I got the right one. No thyroid meds yet.

Will have blood work the end of the 6 wks. Ann

Had blood work the day before my surgery at Admitting. Plus lung X-ray and EKG.

If the parathyroid glands are removed during surgery, is it still possible for

the body to absorb calcium and keep calcim levels up?

With medication, but it is sometimes tricky to keep the balance just

right. Nature has faster and more accurate feedback loops. So, it is

convenient to avoid damage to the parathyroids but not essential.
