Hi, I am a brand new member so possibly there has been discussion

about this, but I am having a second bout of an enlarged thyroid even

though I have been on medication for five years, and my most recent

tests -- according to the endorcrinologist -- show my T3 and T4

are 'within norms'.

We even did a biopsy to make sure it wasn't cancer (it isn't, thank

God) and we did an ultrasound to see if there were polyps or any

other growths, and there aren't --By the way, the biopsy hurt like

hell, which surprised me.

So now the doctor wants me to have surgery. However, I talked her

waiting on that, and for now upping my dosage level a little bit and

I am supposed to come back in a few weeks.

The growth seems to have stopped in the last couple of weeks -- even

before upping the medication. It is nowhere as large as when I first

got sick, but back then I had gone undiagnosed for FIVE years, and

they finally figured it out when I hit the ground and stopped

breathing for four minutes.

Before that, I was " diagnosed " as having an eating disorder because I

was gaining weight so fast (60 pounds in one year), and then sent to

a psychiatric hospital and was " diagnosed " as bipolar (because of my

mood swings)... aaarrrggghhh... And when I pointed to the growth on

my neck, I was told it was because I was just plain fat.

In fact, the doctor (a man) said, " You just want me to give you pills

so you can lose weight. I probably eat less than you do. You just

need to push yourself away from the table. " He then printed out names

of therapists who deal with eating disorders. I ran out of the office

crying.

Didn't seem to matter to these doctors (went to three) that my hair

was falling out, I had scaly skin, and zero energy. So -- as you can

imagine, I am feeling panicked about this second bout.

However, I really, really, really, really (really) do not want to

have surgery. I am now reading a book called Thyroid Power to see

what else I can do.

I am also a bit scared because I can constantly feel my thyroid

pressing on my trachea (sp?) so I worry about my airway being cut off

at some point. Plus, it's like wearing a shirt with a collar that's

too tight, only I cannot " unbutton " the collar.

Sorry this message is so long, but I am feeling confused and worried

and am glad there are other people I can talk to about this.

Thanks -- (in NE CT)

,

" Within norms " is not good enough, since you still ahve symptoms. I

hope your Dr. will allow you to take more medication-- enough to make

your thyroid quiescent.

I had the same thing happen with the lump pressing

down on my throat! They took half of my thyroid out

and now I wish I would have waited. The Armour thyroid

meds got rid of a fatty tumor on my shoulder(in 3

weeks) and now I wonder if the lump would have went

away with the Armour.
