First, I don't have personal experience with Hashi's. In my family, the thyroids simply shut down. The cause is unknown, but it could well be genetic. Then again, we all went to the dentist. There are others on the list who can probably provide more technical information about the antibody tests. I do know that when antibodies are high, it can sometimes have direct ill effects, depending on whether the antibodies are attacking just the gland or all forms of thyroid hormones in the blood. Usually it just means an active attack is underway, which will mean your thyroid status (and dosage needed) will change toward the hypoT side. However, there is more than one type, more than one mechanism, and more than one test. Some antibodies target other systems at the same time; some directly affect hormone levels in the blood, which greatly complicates dosage titration. Some have reported here that an increase in thyroid medications can actually trigger an attack. It can be complicated. There is light at the end of the tunnel, though. For most, the antibodies eventually shut down the thyroid completely and then the immune system relaxes. This allows you to stabilize and get a single dosage that works. Best of luck. Guest guest
Thanks Chuck, Every little bit of info can help. My TSH levels have been all over from 150+ down to 5 and every where in between. Thats the reason why I requested the antibodies test. Now I am on a search to find out more about the " mental " part of this. Mood swings have been turned on high. I am just glad to know that I am ot crazy... hubby might disagree with that. lol Dawn > First, I don't have personal experience with Hashi's. In my family, the > thyroids simply shut down. Guest guest
I really think you need to find a doc who understands thyroid problems. Your doc just sounds so confused. You will need to get enough thyroid meds and iodine http://www.optimox.com and then your diseases will go away. Amazing huh? Guest guest
Chuck I agree and Dr. agrees about the need for more meds. She wants to see my TSH levels under 2. When I first started on meds, I had a bad reaction so the Dr. ups my dosage slowly so there is not a repeat. As for getting relief, physically I am fine. I am underweight and physically active. More active now since being on meds. I guess holding the couch down wasn't considered being productive. Mentally, is there any relief from feeling like you are losing your mind? That is my main concern, is getting my mental stablility back. Any suggestions? I don't think iodine will cure craziness Dawn > If the lowest TSH was 5, you never got relief and need more medications. > > Chuck >

If the problem is thyroid related, the brain fog should repair with the physical symptoms. If one set of symptoms gets better but not the other, it suggests there is another underlying problem. If you were hypoT for an extended period, it may take awhile for all systems to get back to par. Some damage can be permanent, if your treatment was inadequate for long enough, but this is usually a self-limiting process due to cardiac issues. Guest guest
Actually yeah iodine does cure craziness!! Mental illness is one of the symptoms of low iodine. http://www.optimox.com Your other prob might be adrenal insufficiency. Gracia Chuck I agree and Dr. agrees about the need for more meds.
