Guest guest
a, A good book to read: " Crazy Makers " How the Food Industry Is destroying our brains and harming our children by Carol Simontacchi. It has some info about Monsanto, infant formulas etc. Very enlightning! Connie (s Mom)
Guest guest
Say, a! I have your same concerns about suspect and possibly evil Monsanto (makers of Roundup and other scary products), and the bovine growth hormone given to some cows. I really like Silk, too. Sun Soy is another brand I drink regularly. I eliminated nearly all dairy including milk in early 1998 and have felt better ever since. Since there is some concern (although I'm not sure it's justified) about the safety of soy (because among other things it may effect thyroid function), I would read what you can about it before switching over completely. I've decided that it's probably safe and that the dairy people are possibly exaggerating any possible negatives, but I really don't know. I still have my three kids on milk, but we have a local dairy that gets their milk from cows who are not treated with the hormone, and they deliver it to our doorstep (for anyone living near me - Elaine and Anne - it is Oberweis Dairy). It's expensive, but well worth it. The kids get enough unwanted hormones from poultry, beef, and pork. And while we're on the environmental safety issue, I also don't let Chem Lawn or the likes come and put toxins on my lawn six times a year. I haven't let anyone do that for seven years now (and I only did in the first three years because we grew our grass from seed and were having trouble keeping the weeds down). We certainly have weeds now, but as long as the grass is mowed regularly, it really isn't that bad. I pull what I can by hand (although clover is really tough). I also try to reduce the amount of grass I have every year and plant flowers or groundcover instead. Any picky neighbors nearby don't have to worry about any weeds of mine spreading to their lawn because they put enough Agent Orange on their property to eventually kill their pets. I'm looking into corn gluten meal which is a newly developed 100% safe preemergent to keep new weeds from germinating. The best part is that when the kids and their friends are rolling in the grass, I don't worry a bit. I don't allow the kids to roll in the grass at other homes if the grass is treated. The rule is, if it's absolutely weed free, it's probably unhealthy. We also have tons of birds, butterflies, worms, and ants. It's safe for me, too. The last thing I need is to be exposed to herbicides and pesticides while I garden. OK, I guess that's enough for now. who has a hard time stopping on this topic ----- Original Message ----- From: " a " <aA@...> < egroups> Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2000 8:40 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Seeds Of Destruction > I agree Trish. Guest guest
If there were serious safety concerns with soy milk, they wouldn't make infant formula out of soy. Is Sun Soy made with organic beans? Soy beans are top on the list of genetically altered foods, so if it doesn't say it is organic, the beans can be altered. This entire topic is a real hot spot for me. It always has been. That's why I try to eat as natural as possible. It gets harder and harder. I wish I had a farm near me to get real milk. Of all the things I miss about farming, it is the fresh milk I miss the most. I don't use any pesticides either. My lawn is as green as can be and is 90% weeds!!! It looks very nice when it is cut, and I'd rather have weeds than a chemical lawn. a ----- Original Message ----- From: Matsumura <Matsumura_Clan@...> < egroups> Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2000 10:50 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Monsanto/Soy Milk > Say, a! > > I have your same concerns about suspect and possibly evil Monsanto (makers > of Roundup and other scary products), and the bovine growth hormone given to > some cows. Guest guest
Connie, If I read that book, it would probably send me over the edge LOL! I've heard about infant formulas, so I nursed my children and made all their baby food. I was a neurotic mother when it came to any foods put in their mouth. But I WILL keep my eye open for that book. It will give me more ammo when I write to the legislatures. Thanks! a ----- Original Message ----- From: <ConnieRon@...> < egroups> Sent: Thursday, July 13, 2000 12:05 AM Subject: Re: [ ] Monsanto/Soy Milk > a, > A good book to read: " Crazy Makers " How the Food Industry Is destroying our > brains and harming our children by Carol Simontacchi. Guest guest
a, Since infant formula is such big business, I wouldn't be so sure that safety is the first concern. In fact, I breast feed all three kids, and can't believe that I wasn't strongly encouraged to do so and that I was even, at times, challenged ( " Ooooh, the baby's crying. You probably don't have enough milk! " ). The handed me all kinds of infant formula samples and coupons at the hospital, too. No wonder so many women give up and give the babes formula! Sun Soy has no indication on the label that it is organic. Not all of the stores here carry Silk (yet), so I pick up Sun Soy in a pinch (it's very good, but Silk is better). There are usually organic soy brands in the cartons in the juice aisle which don't require refrigeration until you open them. Those are good for cooking with or in coffee. I don't really like drinking those straight. ----- Original Message ----- From: " a " <aA@...> < egroups> Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2000 10:14 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Monsanto/Soy Milk > If there were serious safety concerns with soy milk, they wouldn't make > infant formula out of soy. Guest guest
Connie and a, Yes, reading this book will probably make me nuttier, too! Thanks for the tip, Connie. Guess I'll have to find it. Here is the Crazy Makers web site for some more info: http://www.thecrazymakers.com/ ----- Original Message ----- From: " a " <aA@...> < egroups> Sent: Thursday, July 13, 2000 7:09 AM Subject: Re: [ ] Monsanto/Soy Milk > Connie, > If I read that book, it would probably send me over the edge LOL! > I've heard about infant formulas, so I nursed my children and made all their > baby food. Guest guest
......talking about fertilizing the lawns......we live in South Jersey which is primarily a farming community or should I say, use to be. A lot of the farmers are selling their land so that new homes can be built. I have often wondered about the safety of the water for these homes as they have well water. All those years of fertilization of the ground for crops must surely be in the ground. Just a thought. ~ Carol ~ ----- Original Message ----- From: Matsumura <Matsumura_Clan@...> < egroups> Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2000 10:50 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Monsanto/Soy Milk > Say, a! > > I have your same concerns about suspect and possibly evil Monsanto (makers > of Roundup and other scary products), and the bovine growth hormone given to > some cows.
