heres my opinion:

i think ill have to disagree with the " just relax camp " on this one.

(although i dont think its worth flying home either).

many dog bites (most?) need antibiotics to help keep them from

getting infected. a couple things which increase the risk of

infection are " deeper " bites ( ie " terrible " ), involvment of an hand

or foot, and a patient with not completely normal immune system

(such as us). i dont think the enbrel effects it.. but our condition

does.

you also need to know if your tetanus needs updated.

if you have a hometown doc with whom you work regularly you can

probably get their opinion over the phone and if anything is needed

they may be able to phone things to a nearby pharmacy. if not a walk

in clinic should be able to handle things.

you can do a google search on " dog bite treatment " for further info.

if it were me id get it addressed.

thoroughly and assuming you keep it clean and disinfected, you

should just relax and enjoy the rest of the time with your friend. I

think you have worked yourself into an unnecessary panic. If the

wound starts to look like it's not healing properly, go to a local

doctor. I get paper cuts all the time at work and have 3 dogs and am

always getting scratched. Just keep the wound clean and you should

be fine. Kathy F)

I can vouch for this. I was bitten by a dog last September, and my

doctor gave me antibiotics and an updated tetanus. He said that their

worry with dog bites generally wasn't rabies (as most of the time the

dog is known to be up-to-date on its shots), but infection. I think the

number he quoted was that upwards of 60% of untreated dog bites develop

into severe infection. The victim should definitely get it treated as

soon as possible, and watch the arm near the bite for any signs of

infection (streaking, serious swelling or pain). That said, if you get

the antibiotics and keep it clean (they won't stitch it up because they

don't want to trap infection in there), there is little to worry about.

If the dog has just scratched the surface with its teeth and you clean

it well and quickly, you can skip the doctor, but a true bite from a dog

can easily puncture into tendon, muscle, and vessels.

Hi Dee,

I'll agree with everyone on this.

Yes, just relax!! Your mention of jumping on a plane back home sounds

like an severe over-reaction to me. Don't they have phones in Dallas?

Also Aren't there Emergency rooms in Dallas?

That said, Yes you should call your doctor. Perhaps even go to an

emergency room if necessary for tetnus shot. But, while comforting to

go home to your own doctor, it's very likely you can get the same

treatment and advice right where you are.

Stay Well,

What a tragedy! Lossing your best friend (the family pet) is a horror. Only

someone who has been through it understands, just like everything else in life.

Our precious Token is gone l5 years and I still miss her and think of her all

the time. She was my best friend. She followed me around all the time even

though Ted was the one to feed her. She always gave unconditional love and knew

when I was blue and how to cheer me up. When she died, I mourned for her as if

she was a human being. She was more than a dog she was a member of our familly.

I feel for your brother and his family. I know how much they are hurting and how

much pain they are going through.Just know that I am thinking of them as they

are going through this horrendous ordeal

THEY ARE A STRONG LOVING FAMILY..THEY WILL GET THROUGH IT WITH THE LOVE AND

SUPPORT FROM EACHTOERH AND THE REST OF MY GREAT FAMILY.

LOVE TO YOU,
