Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Does anyone know whether or not cows get Lyme, and can it be transmitted through raw cow's milk? We have drank raw milk before as a health food. Now I'm thinking I will give that up, no matter how valuable those enzymes in it are. I read somewhere that dairy farmers are the most afflicted with MS of all occupations. In fact, the family that we buy raw milk from has two cases of MS and one rheumatoid arthritis in their immediate family. I wonder if it's Lyme. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this? I know it's just anecdotal but I can't help wondering. Trish ________________________________________________________________________ Try Juno Platinum for Free! Then, only $9.95/month! Guest guest
I have read but am too tired to look for a reference right now that cats and cows are both asymptomatic (they carry the disease but don't show the symptoms) carriers of Lyme. Lyme invades all the bodily fluids of ticks and the animals it infects. So cows can transmit Lyme via raw milk. Raw milk is legal in Wisconsin but not any longer in Iowa. Both states have Lyme, but it seems to be more prevelant in Wisconsin. We used to get raw milk from Wisconsin but I stopped because of the risk. It's too bad because I believe that raw milk otherwise has advantages over pasteurized milk. Guest guest
Thank you Kelley. I am going to have to stop with the raw milk, too. I forgot to mention in my first post that most dairy farmers drink their milk raw and that is why they may be at increased risk for Lyme, which may be misdiagnosed as MS. Now I am concerned that my whole family has gotten it from milk. Trish ________________________________________________________________________ Try Juno Platinum for Free! Then, only $9.95/month! Guest guest
Dairy farmers would also be exposed directly to ticks that wander off the cows to them. Animal groomers, naturalists and conservationists, veternarians and people who work in greenhouses also have a higher than average risk of contracting Lyme too.
