Greetings,

I dearly hope you are not talking about that horrid bill in the Senate

called S510. It will be the end of good healthy food, not the start.

It will put all small farmers out of business and clear the way for

factory farms and businesses to do as they please. If you value good,

clean healthy food, kill that bill and support a local farmer that you

can personally inspect. Don't leave healthy food to the government,

they won't enforce the rules they have now, but they will against the

small farmer.

All this is is more big government. Like you said it will run the little guys

out of business and make the big farms richer and government more control over

us. There are plenty of regulations on the books. It does not matter how many

bills and regulations we pass there will still be unsafe foods. You cannot

count on the government to protect us.

Let us just see what prompted the Consumers request for action:

Here's what popped up:

" A new report on the companies that produced the recalled eggs found

chickens living among rodents, maggots and 8-foot-high piles of manure. "

Unless consumers speak out and demand better inspections, testing and

oversight of food producers, we will continue to face costly and deadly

recalls.

What part of " unless consumers speak out and demand better inspections " is

so bad? What guarantee do we have that the small " organic " farmer will

provide me with properly grown produce if there are no standards or

inspections? Put aside the word " Government " and insert " people " .

As regards the usual " anti Big Government " rant, are we saying that what is

going on right now is OK? Because what is going on with Egg producers is

going on with meat producers and and other large-scale food producers. For

one thing, while we need more and more small food producers, there is

nothing in the makeup of a small businessman that makes him more prone to

not poison me or seek lower cost for his product by cheating.

The problem is not government, the problem is people..........people in

government, people in business (small and large) and people in politics

with a goodly measure of the rest of us. the cost of Civilization is

Government. Albeit one made up of honest people or isn't it people that

make up government. Because thousands upon thousands of people have been

poisoned in the recent " egg " mess, this thread is turning into political

outbursts when all Consumer report is asking us to do is " to speak out and

demand better inspections " and as far as I am concerned it better be the

small farmer just as much as the big farmer. Spouting slogans that are

popular in certain circles does nothing to assure us we are not being given

slops for food.

Greetings,

The problem is that they are using this to bring in new regulations

against small farmers that don't have enough birds to create that much

manure. The cry should be enforcement of existing rules, because there

are more than enough regulations on the books already to deal with this.

Ask yourself why they are not enforcing the existing rules while

asking for more rules?

Direct market farming is now taking almost 20% of the market share,

enough for the big boys to be angry about. The new rules will not be

enforced against the big, factory farms. They already have enough rules

to control them if they bothered to do the job, or if the government

would hire enough inspectors to enforce the laws. This is not being done.

This is not about food safety, it is about control. It is about putting

the small, family farm out of business once and for all.

Yes, the factory farms need to be inspected, controlled and penalized

for their cruelty to animals, the filth, the contaminated food they

produce and many other things. The bill would be just fine, if and only

if it exempts direct market farms. My customers make sure I do it

right, they have the right to drop by and check up on me. The same is

true of the farms I buy my eggs and raw milk from.

This bill will penalize and destroy the farmers that are doing all the

right things and won't make a bit of difference to the problem.

Organic is worthless, in most cases. I know many organic farmers where

the inspector drives in, doesn't even get out of his car, asks for his

check and leaves. Certified Naturally Grown is a much better label, it

is farmer inspected and we know what to look for. However, the best

inspection is to do it yourself.

A farm that grows healthy food should not be a problem to someone with

MCS. If there are chemicals present, you will know. Don't buy there.

With our ability to be canaries, to sniff out the tiniest bit of

chemicals, we can be very confident about our inspections. Food is too

important to leave it's quality to others.

There is no doubt a big part of the problem is, as you say, " if they

bothered to hire enough inspectors " . So, we're back to the people need to

speak out and demand this while the issue is hot. If I remember correctly,

Poultry Inspectors have about 1 1/2 seconds to inspect a chicken.

It isn't " big government " but not enough government inspectors doing their

job correctly.

I maintain, and always will, that we must demand more re our food supply but

it takes a catastrophe such as this to bring the issue our in the open.

and Jane Doe had no idea this was occurring and I venture to say many

on this list did not have the slightest idea either.

I remember finding a Pesticide Powder residue on " organic " celery and when I

asked about it they let me know that under certain circumstances Organic

producers may use pesticides. The problems in our food supply go much

further than this current issue and either something is done or it will

continue and only get worse.

Thanks for 'your side' of the issue as " Education is our best friend " .

Free-range-pasture raised hens would be living in the open fields so to speak.

Of course out there would be other critters and animals.

Check out those organizations supposedly watching for us, their donors could be

our enemies too.

Greetings,

I totally agree, the people do need to speak out, now while the issue is

hot. But not for support for that horrid piece of legislation, but to

ask the government to actually enforce the laws they have before

creating new ones. New legislation is not needed, but yes, they do need

a very loud outcry about our food.

The only answer I can see, is that the large farms need to be broken up,

we need farms that grow food, not commodities. We need farmers that

care for the land, the animals and the soil. This can not be done on a

grand scale. Local food is a must, while I am aware that not everything

grows everywhere. I personally find it atrocious that we can not buy

broccoli grown in the US, it all comes from Mexico and Guatemala.

Certain crops will always have to be shipped, such as bannanas,

pineapple, citrus and other temperature sensitive crops. Also, many

grains do not grow in warmer climates. But, crops that will grow

locally should not be shipped. Meat, dairy and eggs should be the top

of the local list.

We need to feed ourselves. If this country would take 25% of

the money wasted on looking pretty and spend it on food, our health

would drastically improve. And our farmers could stay in business.

Bright Blessings,
