Wow thanks for the info, I saw some articles in PUD MED, reading up on some

of the studies they did, Now I'm going to buy the book and read some more.

I know it depends on the stage one is in, for prograf to deter

transplantation, So lets see what happens.

Thanks

Jerry,

Maybe you can also tell me what side effects you experience from Prograf.

I had my liver transplant in May 1995 and have been on Prograf since that time. One side effect I have is occasional gastrointestinal distress (vomitting and diarrhea which come on very suddenly). The other problem is that the Prograf is effecting my kidney function...I am now between 50 and 60% on the output, although the BUN and creatine numbers are within normal range.

I would be interested in knowing what you think about Prograf.

Bonnie....other than blaming it for my development of cancer .. I have

had no other side efects that I know of. I know it may be hard on the

kidney but I havent had any indication. I like it pretty well and

sometimes I forget to take it with no adverse reactions.I`m on 2mgs

twice daily but I know they could reduce that and have talked about it a

couple of times.

It is the only med I take in relation to my

transplant. Other than what you told me what else do you face

post-transplant?

Jerry,

As I mentioned, I have occasional bouts of gastro problems with the Prograf. I am a little upset about the kidney function being abnormal and am being followed up every 6 months by a nephrologist. My transplant coordinator has me on 2 mg. of Prograf twice a day and cannot reduce my dosage since I am at the minimal therapeutic level. Her words were "let us worry about it" (the kidney function and prograf). I just wonder what they will do if my kidney function continues to deteriorate. It seems that at some point they would have to lower the medication.

Another concern I have about the Prograf is cancer. You stated that your cancer was due to the Prograf. A woman in my transplant support group who has been on Prograf for over 10 years (one of the first at Pittsburgh to receive it) recently was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had one kidney removed. That is not very reassuring. But, like you, Jerry, I try to live one day at a time and be grateful that I am still alive. We can't know what the future holds for us, so we have to appreciate all the time we have been given which we would not have had were we not fortunate enough to receive our transplant. May 21 of this year will mark the 6th anniversary of my liver transplant and that day will certainly be one to celebrate.

Best wishes to you, and thank you for being such a great resource and source of insight for this liver support group.

Took prograf in March for about 2-1/2 weeks when I developed bacterial

pneumonia and was hospitalized. A culture revealed bacteria--don't remember

name--but doctor explained it is one that everyone's body fights off on

regular basis, so was immediately take off the prograf. I have had

bronchitis before and had viral pneumonia as a 6 year old child--don't know

if that may have set up my susceptibility to pneumonia infection or not--but

no doubt drug caused it to occur. Have had two Remicade infusions (two

weeks apart) and am scheduled for next one four week interval 10/17; then

will have infusion at 8 week intervals. HMO Insurance paying for 100% and

benefits have been immediate. My approval with ins. co. came in three days

as doctor was able to document no other options left for me as embrel not

available until 2003. I have so much more energy, less pain and have

reduced prednisone from 15 mg. to 7.5 mg. already. Also take less

darvocet--reduced from 2 pills 3Xday to one pill occasionally. So, I am

really encouraged so far and my husband is amazed at the increase in my

stamina and mobility. in VA

I didn't. I'd much rather take it than prednisone. It is however a drug that they have to check blood levels on, it is toxic if you take too much. Correct dose depends on the person. I hope it works for you.

I am post-transplant and have been taking 4 mg. of prograf daily for the past 8 years. The only problem I have with the drug is that occasionally I have some gastric upset..vomitting and diarrhea. However, this occurs only a few times a year and much less the longer I remain on the medication.

Thanks for the updateThe pamphlet made it sound like the one of the worst drugs in the world. It is nice to know someone does well on it.

I will be on 1 mg a day. The cyclosporine stopped working and they want me off prednisone.
