Guest guest
My daughter just started Kindergarten, 1/2 day typical with a shared aide and 1/2 day special ed classroom. She has been diagnosed on the spectrum since 2, had early intervention including spec ed, OT mainly for sensory, speech. My daughter is apparently doing GREAT and WONDERFUL in school although then is some mention on her quarterly report about issues getting along with other students. None of this was mentioned at the parent-teacher conference of course... that would just make too much sense. At that conference I asked if they had seen much sensory behaviors and I could tell they were lying to me when they said no. I see them at home of course. My daughter was " screened " for OT which would decide if she needs an OT evaluation and apparently they decided she doesn't need one. I don't know what I think about that. I just know they are going to try to remove her Asperger diagnosis... Her dev pediatrician basically kept the diagnosis even though she barely fit anymore because she does still need some social skills help and the diagnosis allows her to get 2 speech per week by law. We need the neuropsych eval so I can show them her cognitive difficulties and we can also see more clearly what those are as well. Some are obvious and I've told them about them but that's just my word to them... She is entitled to accommodations for the neurolyme issues on their own if that's what it ends up being. Anyway, my daughter needs a neuropsych eval and it HAS to be a specific practice who are experts in her neurolyme brain issues *and* autism. If we get a reg eval they're not going to catch most of the problems caused by neurolyme. If she loses the autism category, she will need proof of the cognitive issues that remain that get the accommodations that way. Right now she's doing great academically because she came in knowing way more than these other kids. She's a sponge despite memory problems, etc. But her cognitive issues contribute to her behavioral issues which are basically social skills... playing well with others, rigidity, not taking turns, controlling play, sore loser... How do I request the independent eval from the school district so they will pay for it? I can make a pretty good case that no local doc can do it, and other children like my daughter have been successful with this request (not in my district tho as far as I know). But I don't even know where to send the letter. Also, at the first IEP meeting, the school district required my daughter's preschool to do an FBA (that I had been requesting from the preschool for months prior), to be done before the start of Kindergarten. It was done and it basically said she was bossy! It was done by a social worker. My daughter's team has been apparently talking to a behavioral consultant and set up a behavior plan but it doesn't really seem to hit everything I don't think.. but again I need a REAL eval. Her spec ed teacher tells me that she doesn't think my daughter needs another FBA. I personally don't feel like she got one in the first place. What behaviors would deem an FBA appropriate?? Does she need to be biting or something like that? Thanks, Jen
