How often do u communicate or email your child's teacher?

What are the parameters you use for when you email? I was scolded for emailing

my son's teachers. I only do it when there is a problem period. I don't want to

talk to them more than is necessary. How have you walked this mine field of

communication? (I realize getting a teacher with small children means she

doesn't have time or want to make the time to talk about a student's problems)

My friend said I should just email the principal with the problems then since

the teacher is too busy. How do you all handle this type of thing???
